alright so i want some protection programs, so i could like scan for viruses every now and then, and protect my computer, etc etc
i have mcafee, but its like not the full version i think or something, and a few times a day, an alert saying my spamkiller is not up to date pops up, and i can't update it no matter what
so basically there's that annoying message that lost me atleast three starcraft games already, cause my comp is slow and it takes over ten seconds to go to desktop, exit the popup, then go back
and i don't want to delete the mcafee because i wanna be able to scan for viruses every now and then
FOR TL;DR is there a really good free program that isn't annoying that i could download? thanks

ESET NOD32 or Norton, not free but I guess you can always download it.
For 100% free then I would suggest AVG although it is clearly lacking in comparison to the paid programs.
I also suggest you get antispyware, try SuperAntiSpyware

Logic? Common sense? Don't open exes, use a good browser, etc.
Edit: Or getting a linux distro. NO viruses work on linux.

This however is the best policy. I haven't even gotten a virus in years. Using your brain >>>> any protection program.

NOD32 is the best commercial virus protection program, by far.

i use to love avg but the newest version is a joke

Avira.
AVG used to be really good, but the new versions are shithouse.

Microsoft Security Essentials combined with the default Vista/7 firewall, good browsing practices, and UAC will pretty much make you immune to viruses and attempted attacks. If you're worried that MSE isn't going to catch everything, get Malwarebytes.
Remember Conficker back a little while ago? Vista/7 computers with default protection were immune to it, because UAC stopped it dead in its tracks. Granted, just immediately clicking "Yes" on every UAC prompt completely defeats the purpose of using it.
And if you're that against UAC, then feel free not to use it, but there's really no reason not to. If you're getting more than one or two prompts a day (especially with Win7), then something is very wrong.

Kaspersky. Those Russians are great with computers :S

I use Symantec Endpoint Protection. It's like a corporate version of Norton, so it doesn't have all the bloat. I get it as a free download from my university, so if you have access to it, definitely get it.

AVG, Avast, or Avira for Antivirus (AVG or Avast I think is best).
SuperAntiSpyware for Antispyware.
Windows Firewall for Firewall.

I've heard the opposite recently. I know Avira has that stupid pop up asking you to buy their shit all the time. And I've heard Avast does not.
