No. People from other countries are like "Oh so what? My internet is good already." What people are failing to realize is most internet services in Americaare SHIT. Most people are stuck with 10mbps or worse for $50-100 with a bandwidth cap of a couple hundred gigabytes. In Canada it's even worse. I have to be careful not to go over my bandwidth cap. Streaming stuff in HD (when it's even possible if my internet isn't congested) eats up a lot of bandwidth. Downloading stuff, new games etc isn't something I can do freely. I can't back up my files because 1. it's too slow and 2. It uses too much of my bandwidth cap. When my average speed is 10 mpbs, and I could potentially get get something 100 times faster (just download speed, about 500x faster upload) for roughly the same price as I'm paying now that's a VERY big deal. So yes, when you say "so what" YOU are the one showing your ignorance. i am so terribly sorry... i should've lived in the US and experienced how slow and expensive the internet is before posting here... because everyone knows about everything in the world and especially the US cos its the biggest and bestest country in da whole wide world ...right? no but seriously how would i know your internet is shitty?... it cant be that bad everywhere... it all comes down to laziness.. just work more and get more money so you can get better internet... everything else is so cheap there compared to europe (and yes i have been on holiday in america - and yes i guess you can call me spoiled now cos my parents took me)... so what you save on food and whatever you can spend on better internet and dont call me an idiot either just because i dont know one small fact that you know... i probably know thousands of facts that you dont.. but im not gonna call you an idiot just because you dont know them... please be nicer in the future Let me explain something to you. I currently live in Northeast Philadelphia, a major city with hubs of reasonably speedy internet access towards center city and the various colleges. I have an internet connection that tops out at 1.5mbps down and .5 mbps up. This internet connection costs roughly $40 a month. The only alternative to this service is through comcast, which would cost me upwards of $50 a month for 5mbps, and I haven't changed over to them because they frequently have service outages in this area, which would leave me without internet for hours. This is in a major city in the United States. I cannot use fiber of any kind without paying to have it run to my area (thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars) and there are no current plans to improve service in the area. It doesn't "all come down to laziness". It comes down to telecom businesses in the area having a monopoly and no incentive to improve service to their customers. I cannot "work more" because there are limited jobs around here that I am qualified to perform. You are not spoiled because of whatever happened with your parents, but your internet is FAR better than what is available in the U.S. on average, and you do look like an idiot saying that this is "no big deal". This is like cable internet becoming available after being restricted to dial-up connections only in certain areas. Don't act so ignorant with childish comments like this: Show nested quote +i am so terribly sorry... i should've lived in the US and experienced how slow and expensive the internet is before posting here... because everyone knows about everything in the world and especially the US cos its the biggest and bestest country in da whole wide world ...right? Sir, i think i got it, thank you for teaching me the ways of being a true american hero.. go patriotism!!
in all seriousness though, i said it before i will say it again... quit bashing me for not knowing a small fact that internet in america is shitty... honestly i thought it was better on average than here in europe... therefore you can conclude that i must be retarded...
do you know all the countries in europe and their locations?.. maybe you do but i'd say theres a 90% probability that you dont.. am i calling you stupid? no... just because i dont know one thing jesus christ.. relax dude...
yeah i cant relate to it im not impressed and i have good reason for it.. thats all... no need to take it this far calling me childish and an idiot... thats just dumb

Europe isn't one country. There are ISPs in every country spreading their lines. That is not really true in NA. In Canada we have Bell and Rogers pretty much, and other providers borrow their lines.
And while it's not difficult to build across empty space, it is expensive which limits progress.

What's also awesome about this is the free service Google is going to provide to schools/hospitals/libraries/etc. in the neighborhoods that get installation.

I call bull shit gigabit is about 155 megabytes, i think you can get that in sweden but i have no idea on pricing not that it even matters, unless you are uploading multi-hour videos to youtube, after a certain point bandwidth doesnt even matter i think for na customers, no data caps etc is more interesting that higher speeds? I dont doubt the speed being available, but for a third of the price? No way.
As for NA customers, the no data caps and higher speeds is nice. Sure the speed becomes overkill at a certain point, but our speeds are so bad right now that what Google is offering is huge. And the data caps certainly suck, more for Canada than the US.

It wouldn't even be a discussion if people would read the thread in it's entirety before posting. name 1 thing about this thread that we truly missed? making up things to make us sound stupid doesn't really say anything.... and how is it easier to spread internet in Europe? Internet is not just about 1 country, to get good internet it has to be spread over all of europe, to connect the multiple countries to each other (which is the reason Korea has bad connection to EU, because the countries in between has poor internet connection) where you have to work between country borders etc. and make multiple contracts to set it up. I only see more issues in spreading the internet. It takes basic public education to know that the entirety of Europe is about half of the populated areas in Canada (completely ignoring that their are communites in the far north as well). And unless one nation decides to be a completely jackass an cut-off their entire country from the internet, then no, connecting between multiple countries is not a big deal.

Someone ship me the free internet please. That would be super sweet for sure. I wouldn't mind paying for gigabit internet either.

The general consensus here is that all of canada is stuck with shit internet.. Which isn't necessarily true. The Western part of canada (B.C, Alberta), actually have pretty decent internet.. In eastern canada like Ontario its a good bit more expensive. Shaw is the primary provider here and they have 20 MBPS download at $55 per month, and 10 MBPS download at $45/month, and they have main competition from Telus internet/phone provider.. So there isn't really a monopoly going on like you see from Comcast over in the states. What I'm getting for connection here doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as some of you U.S folks reporting getting like 5 mbps down at $50 per month. That is REALLY rough.

But isn't the internet in Sweden actually stupidly good?

When will this arrive here ;__;, I'm stuck with a 70 mb/s internet connection, why can't I have a insanely fast connection...

So do they give you internet for free while they are installing your fiber network in your neighborhood?
|
I would buy this the instant it's offered in my area. All that's even near me is fios and it came out years ago and is yet to get in my area.

Jesus christ I wish I had put all my birthday money into google stocks when I was a kid. They are trying hard to become a monopoly.

someone needs to inform veg, he'll want googlefiber shipped to canada or something asap!

The 1gb costs 120$, and the other one costs 70$. Sounds like a scam to me.
You didn't read anything. The 1gb + tv is $120, $70 is just for the 1gb internet. The 5mb internet is "free" (300 construction cost or $25 a month for 12 months)

I'm hoping for this too, I was stuck with DSL for a while up here until comcast cable finally branched into my area about 2-3 years ago. I want GOOGLE!
