I download faster from the internet than if i wanna transfer shit to my usb (its like 10mb/s)... My point is just that, yeah it sounds great n all 1gigabit/s but nobody can use it... its pointless.. why would i need faster internet than what i have already? i never have lags, sure i wish downloading diablo 3 woulda taken 2 minutes instead of 30 minutes, but in the end i had to go to the shop and get snacks so it didnt matter... I thought the US had decent internet and everything was cheaper there.. i'm baffled that everyone is so excited by this... and btw, its not 1 gigabyte per second... its 1 gigaBIT per second... cant believe you are trying to lecture me lol I live near a big city, and I believe we're paying like 50-70 bucks for 25 mbps download, 4mbps upload. So yeah, 40x faster for the same price would be nice. And we have 5 computers in this house (more actualy) so it would definitely be possible to use it all up. Internet in the US is absolutely atrocious compared to most of the modern world - just because you get nice downloads doesn't really mean anything for the US.

Internet is not just about 1 country, to get good internet it has to be spread over all of europe, to connect the multiple countries to each other (which is the reason Korea has bad connection to EU, because the countries in between has poor internet connection) where you have to work between country borders etc. and make multiple contracts to set it up. I only see more issues in spreading the internet. The first three pages of this thread are full of Americans and Canadians posting the crap speeds they get for the stupidly high prices they have to pay. How do the two of you still not get it? Is "Denmark" a secret code name on this TL thread for paid AT&T or Comcast moles to identify each other? For your information, I live less than 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The highest speed AT&T offers is 3 mbps for around $50. I'm too far from their relay to get 6 mbps. Even the 3 mbps is pretty shaky at times. I'm barely close enough to have that connection available where I live. Just like almost everybody in the US/Canada, I only have two choices. It's either the sole phone company or the sole cable company. All other ISPs have to piggyback on their shitty lines. That's why people from the US and Canada are ecstatic over a new competitor in the market.

EDIT: Few people from Denmark need to stop posting. Just unbelievable comments coming from them, use the "English is not my first language" as an excuse, please.

i've also heard about the "monopoly" in the US, but i have always been told that the US has very strict antitrust-laws. not any more?

The Western part of canada (B.C, Alberta), actually have pretty decent internet.. In eastern canada like Ontario its a good bit more expensive. Shaw is the primary provider here and they have 20 MBPS download at $55 per month, and 10 MBPS download at $45/month, and they have main competition from Telus internet/phone provider.. So there isn't really a monopoly going on like you see from Comcast over in the states. What I'm getting for connection here doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as some of you U.S folks reporting getting like 5 mbps down at $50 per month. That is REALLY rough. Speeds are okay in BC. Bandwidth caps are ridiculous. My old plan had like...50 GB monthly usage, and that was split between 4 people (so god help me and my brother during Steam summer sales or christmas sales). We've switched to Telus Optik since , and along the line Telus screwed up and none of our usage is actually tracked...which is just fine and dandy.

We can't just pay for better internet. I get better download/upload than most of America, and this would be 40x better than what I get for the same price. THAT is what is being missed. We're stuck with what we get, and google being a new competitor will really bring some good news to NA internet (hopefully coming to canada soon) Edit: Yeah, normal price is 50$, comcast does have a sale on right now for us though. Comcast also offers 105mbps down/20 up for 105$/month in my area. If that doesnt explain/quantify things well, I'm not sure what could.

Monopoly doesn't matter. Someone has to put the physical hardware in place. The question of cost has to factor in how many people really need that speed.

A city 20 miles away gets 20mbit and two phone lines for $40/month through sonic.net. There is a huge monopoly going on, and I'll be extremely pleased if google breaks it.

I have to keep telling myself if it was gigabyte they would advertise it as 8 gigabits.
