It's April 4th, noon, in Dallas, Texas. Sundance, Lee Chen, and JP wake up in a destroyed hotel room. They find a crying Slasher in the closet, wasted but alive. "What the [expletive] happened this weekend?"
In honor of the obvious parallels and the sequel coming out last week, I present to you a protracted MLG Columbus preview, done through quotes from the movie "The Hangover."
"We are back baby. We are f*ing back."
Nobody is looking forward to MLG Columbus more than Major League Gaming. The Dallas streams were a disaster, and MLG is foaming at the mouth to prove they can do it right. There are two ways to respond to something like Dallas. You can limit the damage, minimize attention, and try to run a smooth event next time. MLG's response, admirably, is to go in the opposite direction and basically paint a target on Columbus.
They added Koreans, a partnership with GSL, and Tastosis. They also added booths, a second stream, and that company that streamed the royal wedding. The die has been cast, the Rubicon has been crossed. There's no going back, Columbus must be a success.
You have to hand it to MLG, even in the wake of the lag and stream problems, they're saying "not only is our next event going to be run properly, it's going to be so kickass you're going to forget about Dallas entirely." It's a tremendous amount of pressure and leaves no room for error, but that's the way it should be. Excellence happens when you hold yourself to that standard.
MLG's new booth and slick looking trophy.
"That is not Doug. The Doug we're looking for is a Terran."
Imagine you're IdrA. You are playing Startale's Bomber in the first broadcast match of MLG, on stage, in front of a huge crowd. You're practicing hard for this match and you're going to show your best stuff. Bomber is really skilled, but you're confident in your ZvT and ZvZ. You just hate Protoss because they are imbalanced. But a day or so before the match, you find out Bomber missed his flight. That's not so bad, it'll be a walkover or someone from the Open Bracket, both options way better than playing against Bomber.
Then the day of the tournament you walk into the venue and sit down to play some warmups in the booth. You look over and there's already someone in the other booth. He looks Korean. Dde? SeleCT? Who is it? You walk out of your booth and over to the other one. You open the door. "Hello?"
The chair slowly turns around. You see his face, but it can't be. He's not supposed to be here. Not him. Not a Protoss. Not THAT Protoss.
MC says, "Hi Greg, long time no see."
You back slowly out of the booth.
But you can't. It's already forcefielded.
* * * * *
On a serious note, oGs.MC vs EG.IdrA is going to be an awesome kickoff match for MLG Columbus. With extended series, this match may determine who has an overwhelming advantage should they meet later in the tournament. However, it must be said that this is actually a bit unfair for everyone in that group to simply replace Bomber with MC, especially for Tyler. He's the only player in the group who hasn't been practicing against Protoss, and suddenly he has to play PvP against the best in the world.

"Trust me, you do not want to be sitting in these seats. We call this place Loserville."
Open bracket is just so, so difficult. Players like EG.Demuslim, mouz.ThorZaIN, and mouz.MorroW are making their MLG debuts. As if navigating through the huge minefield of open players isn't hard enough, they'll have to contend with the CSN Clash of the Houses winner: ST_July. You heard it here first: it is destined that July ends up in GoD Group C.
Incontrol put it best: "I love MLG's format because I'm in the Top 16." Does MLG need to reconsider its format? Or are the fans satisfied that MLG Dallas Champion Dignitas.NaNiwa already ran the gauntlet with an absolutely insane 26-2? Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. Still, there's nothing more dramatic than running through open to the title. Thorzain and July agree.
"I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Columbus, looking for strippers and cocaine."
MLG added some guys to their wolf pack. Artosis and Tasteless have landed. They will likely mix it up with Wheat and Day and JP. All-Plott has to happen, and so does Wheat mimicking the Nick's jokes. However, the question on everyone's mind is not who is casting with who or how many streams there will be, but rather whether Poopfeast420 will meet Artosis in person.
This time, I'm actually a little jealous of everyone watching from home. Dual-streaming BW proleague was one of the most fun experiences ever as a fan, and if you're not attending live, you'll be doing just that. Of course, all of this hinges on the vehicle of technology, so everyone take a moment to pray to the stream gods.
Imagine this but times two.
"Just calm down. We're fine, everything's fine." "How am I supposed to calm down!? Look around you!!!"
Artosis, Tasteless, and the Koreans, especially July and MC, are going to get absolutely mobbed by fans. Listen up, everyone going to MLG: if you want these guys to come back, or more cool persons from Korea to make the trip, go make a memory for them. Seriously, go nuts. Right now the skill level might be higher in Korea, but the fan level is way better at the international events.
So high five these dudes every chance you see them. Cheer loudly and act crazy. Have them sign your boobs. Do NOT mug them or make fun of July's weight (unless it's funny). We want Dan and Nick and Min Chul and PSJ to go back to Korea thinking "damn, I'm really missing out every time there's an international event. Those fans are awesome." And then maybe Boxer or Nada will take a flight out next time.
King me.
"Why don't we remember a god damn thing from last night?" "Obviously because we had a great f*ing time."
The TSL finals were over two weeks ago, but most that watched still remember that epic series. Both finalists are at MLG Columbus: Dignitas.NaNiwa as the defending champion and mouz.ThorZaIN in his first high profile LAN for his new team. One will try to forget and put those games behind him, while the other will attempt to channel the magic that made his run possible.
To quote Naniwa's self-written stream OP: "Naniwa. Dignitas. Protoss. MLG Dallas winner, TSL3 loser." The description is concise, insightful, and mischievously funny, much like Nani himself. Some players are trying to make the championship bracket, or finish top 16. Some are playing for points, or just trying to get known. But for a select few like Naniwa, everything after first place is meaningless.
The Koreans that watched TSL made many comments about wanting to see Thorzain and Naniwa in the GSL. Both players have stated they want to compete with the best, especially in Korea. This weekend they will get a chance to play some of GSL's best and to qualify for Code S or Code A as well.
"Gambling? It's not gambling when you know you're gonna win. "
ST_Ace winning IEM and then bombing out of Code A was the worst thing that could have happen, reinforcing the old Korea > all stereotype. But it won't happen this time, and not just because of the MLG/GSL exchange program. At some point this weekend, a Korean player is going to lose. In fact, many of them will. And when it happens, the everyone will cheer. Loudly. Well everyone except that guy who yells out "jet lag" and makes a frowny face. Don't be that guy.
There is a lot at stake for the Koreans, and not just prizes and prestige. Winning this tournament would be huge for MMA or Moon, neither of which have Code S status. July has yet to win a major title in SC2 after so much success in BW. MC is in a small slump and looks to re-establish his dominance. Losira, once a hot rising new player, has lost seven of his last ten. None of them will be taking it lightly. Let's hope the "foreigners" are up to the task.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wnis_Pju82w We shall see.
"I found $80,000 worth of Bellagio chips in my pocket."
MLG has spared no expense on this event. Players of this caliber will deliver. The casting will be professional and entertaining. The atmosphere will be electric, and the streams should great. All signs point to a great event and no Hangover 2 preview for MLG Anaheim. Did I just jinx MLG? I hope not.

Lol, I said something similar to a friend like 10minutes ago ><.
So pumped for this weekend, I pray that there will be no technical issues because I'm not leaving my room the entire weekend ^_^.
MMA fighting!!
Hot_Bid you going to be wearing your headband and ESPORTS t-shirt for the relay!?
The funny part for me is i watched the Hangover yesterday for the first time and i can really appreciate this type of preview.I hope MLG Colombus has great success this weekend and judging by the changes and stream adaptions they made it should be. The only thing i really think that is a shame is the prize pool money.I get that its only a 3 day tourney but in the future i hope to see the sum grow a bit to attract even more great players
Then the day of the tournament you walk into the venue and sit down to play some warmups in the booth. You look over and there's already someone in the other booth. He looks Korean. Dde? SeleCT? Who is it? You walk out of your booth and over to the other one. You open the door. "Hello?"

LOLOLOLOL
didnt know MC was going to participate, MLG just got better now ! i hope the stream wont fail again.
I went to Dallas, it was awesome, but now I feel like I went to a go-kart track and Columbus is and F1 Grand Prix. I'm definitely gonna go out, buy some chips, some dip, some drinks, and get some friends over and enjoy the shit out of this weekend.

God I'm so excited! Finding out July is going to be there tomorrow literally has me as giddy as a school girl. I can't wait to meet that dude! July Fighting!

That is genius, Hotbid ♥ ♥
If the stream gods are favourable this event is going to be the best lan event in sc2 history, I'm really looking forward to that . However if it fails it's going to be really really bad for MLG, they have so much pressure on them.
Nice preview, really looking forward to the weekend.
But I have a question:
Winning this tournament would be huge for MMA or Moon, neither of which have Code S status
I thought at columbus they only give away, the 3 Code A spots and only the following MLGs will give you Code S wins. After all they already played the up and down matches for the next season and the Format Change will only be in effect afterwards.

i laughed out loud at the forcefield line. i hadn't realised that MC IdrA would be the first match, thats definitely sent me from excited to super excited
I just realised that one person, who probably practiced SO hard for MLG, is gona travel to MLG and face July in the first round... what a bummer/dream.

Didn't know the open tournament bracket was released yet so you could see that. If it is, please give a link to it.

This is going to be amazing, I want to buy a ticket and go down there so bad now, haha..... ............... "....Even get them to sign your boobs.." LOL nice @ Hot Bid
How many players can qualify from the open bracket ? God i hope July plays like his life depends on it , his average skill level should be well above most of the players in there , but qualifing from it curtainly won't be easy .
I very much disagree with the statement that Columbus must be a success. In my eyes, if there are problems, at least we can point at all the effort that was made to alleviate problems from Dallas. Fixing problems for such a large scale event is a process, and at least they are making a considerable effort.
Man that is rough on MC's group. Him having to replace Bomber. I hope everyone is ready and that the games can be great. I am stoked to dual stream this baby!
Let's be fair here, MC hasn't exactly been preparing for idra either. idra has no disadvantage in playing MC instead of Bomber. It would either be both prepared or both unprepared (and 1 jetlagged Yes I am that guy!).

Well, at some point effort needs to translate into results. That said, I have every confidence that MLG will make this weekend a memorable event. Should've planned to go, but at least I have the free stream pass from the last event!

I'd prefer to play a matchup im unconfortable playing than play jetlagged and caught by surprise about the tournament a few hours before the flight.
I get really excited about the GSL finals even when it isn't a good match. I screamed at my computer when Thorzain beat Naniwa. But everytime I read more about MLG Columbus I start to tear up in anticipation. My whole weekend has been scheduled around watching every single game. 2 monitors and 2 streams for my 2 eyes!
Oh my lord, best preview ever, so hyped for this. Hope you get some cookies from MLG for this because I just bought a stream ticket. (When they become available on Saturday of course)
Man. So much hype... I had been planning to go to the gym Friday evening. Now... I'm not so sure. Does anybody know when the stream will be starting, PDT?
Great preview Hot_Bid! With all of the amazing players coming and everything being setup so amazingly, funnily enough the thing I'm still looking forward to most is the Relay Race! This Race better be spotlighted frontpaged announced and featured, in fact going to TL should link to the relay race while its happening! Can't wait! :D
"a Korean player is going to lose. In fact, many of them will. And when it happens, the everyone will cheer. Loudly. Well everyone except that guy who yells out "jet lag" and makes a frowny face. Don't be that guy."
ahhahaha, so great. besides that hype as hell preview WHITE DUDES FIGHTING!
Ehhhh great preview.. now i hate myself even more for not being there. At least we get to enjoy both streams and the LR thread. Ugh i'm going to one of these some damn time.
What a fucking write up, I'm shaking I'm so excited...
First game - MC vs Idra.... I can't even think of a better way to start, combining the best of the West and a 2 time GSL winner.
Thorzain blasting the open bracket, Tastosis casting, Naniwa as defending champ (and potential meetup with Thorzain, whose stream play is just as sick as in TSL). Seriously, I won't be able to go out, and my f'ing birthday is this weekend!
Laughed out loud when I read the forcefielded booth part. I love reading your stuff, Hot_Bid.
Should be a great watch! I hadn't heard about the royal wedding crew, so now I'm really interested in what the new experience will be like (hopefully not "STICK A FORK IN THOSE BUNS" for hours straight, haha).
cant belive they got the booths......just awesome :D stop people losing games just cos their nydus worm made the crowd go mad and their opponent hears -_-

You could be the first nerd to stand someone up at the altar to watch MLG!
I really hope all the fans going there will bring their A-game, a good atmosphere is the most important thing for an event imo. The biggest reason why Stockholm Dreamhack invitational was great is because the fans were so awesome :D
Make cheerfuls, come up with some funny stuff you can make and give to the Koreans etc(no stuffed hamburgers for July though, give those to MC).
I'm super pumped on one hand and on the other hand i know that every single MLG had major issues with delays and the stream. If everything goes alright this might be better then the last Dreamhack.
Best photoshop picture for writeup ever. Hope that MLG really has their shit down, barring Dallas Fridays still have been kinda fucked, and I would hate to miss Idra/MC.
Nice writeup, Im so pumped to watch this event. I will sit together with some of my freinds, watching this on a freakign big screen and have some beer. Sounds like a good plan to me

Just got to the hotel after driving from Calgary Alberta to Columbus, 3000km. So jacked for this event. Pulled the whole drive including 4 hours at a hotel in 40 hours, with a 24hour+ stretch from Dakota to Columbus.

Ever since it was announced that Tasteless was going to Columbus I've been super-hyped. Now you've just reminded me that we have a shot at a Tasteless + Day9 cast and my level of hype has been quadripled all over again!
At some point this weekend, a Korean player is going to lose. In fact, many of them will. And when it happens, the everyone will cheer. Loudly. Well everyone except that guy who yells out "jet lag" and makes a frowny face. Don't be that guy.
Please, don't be that guy.
Cheering for SeleCT, ThorZaIN, MMA, and DeMusliM. Terrans fighting!
Congrats hot bed. I had only a passing interest after hearing day talk about casting there, but now my anticipation for a steamy weekend at my computer has reached dizzying heights.
Anybody know when they'll post the games schedule? Gotta pull for seleCT and the other terrans.
Good article except for the code S thing. The winner of MLG Columbus does not get code S, the winner of future MLG events do, but they aren't implementing that yet. The top three (or four) non-korean (pretty sure anyway) finishers get code A if they want it for Columbus, but that's it.

How is idra not confident in PVZ anymore, are you stuck 2 months in the past? I havent even seen him lose a pvz in forever.
Sure he will still complain about it, but that doesnt change the fact that he has been owning protoss left and right recently.
You forgot to mention free HQ stream on the first day !!!!!! So MLG are pretty much saying, Bring it, 50k viewers on 3 streams 720p? Yeah we can do it.
I am very psyched. I had plans to go out on Friday but I think I'm going to have to call and cancel so I cans gets my nerds on. Nerds before birds man, nerds before birds.
Heh, today I learned that TLO knocked out Losira back during the first GSL Open. Now, Losira is back for revenge. Also, MMA considers Kiwikaki to be his toughest competition at MLG.
I peed my pants like twice while reading this. I'm going to mlg Columbus and I am going to freak the fuck out. IdrA, MC, Ret, NonY, SeleCT all in one group? When it comes to watching streams, events, vods, etc, I suck all of these players StarCraft dicks.
great read i just finished packing and will be flying out for MLG tomorrow. Im so pumped right now to meet players, take pictures and just enjoy a well needed vacation. This totally put me in the right mood before i go
im pretty happy this is going down and mlg is pulling out all the stops to make this good hopefully sooner or later sc2 will overtake halo as the main event
Im so hyped I have to watch this even if it means I have to stay up from 2am to 10am . I wonder if there will ever be a korean stream, seems only fair since we also get an english stream from gom right?
So excited for this weekend. Don't have to work and there's the biggest event for sc2 in North American history. Just have to hope the Foreigners can hold their own and maintain our honor.
Haha it would have been even more funny if you said Grack instead of Greg.
That forcefield thing was just beautiful.
Also yes I'm a bit disappointed in their choice to just slap MC in there. Like wtf? I feel bad for the players in that group, assuming they are at least frustrated even if they are better against Protoss or something.
Except not really Idra. I can't wait to see how the match goes. Either MC gives Idra a whoopin or Idra puts up a good fight :D
The gsl-mlg exchange has made me super-hyped about mlg!
Thinking about buying a ticket for this one to be able to watch the vods (and support this great initiative), anyone know how fast they are about getting them up after each game? If they do it as fast as gsl it would be perfect, then I can watch the nights games when I wake up here in Sweden.
Oh and yeah, great writeup, we are approaching tl-bw coverage quality now in the articles!
Edit: that was meant as a compliment, the tl articles about anything bw is the best thing on the internets ever.
and on that note, I thought the part about idra-mc was so fantastic that I had my wife to read it.. "what's a forcefield", she asked
Sick write up for sure. this will get soooo many people hyped even more for the tourney. It will be like it was before where i go into the confines of my room and just watch the streams all damn day and study at night. Gonna be a kickass weekend.

completely excited thanks to HotBid's awesomest writeup, now i'll have to stay awake until 4 in the morning to watch it all (the scheduling is a bit hard on europe this time, but who cares about sleep when there's starcraft to be had!) :D :D :D :D :D D:D :DD :D

Its a good idea from the players perspective. To be able to show something different. Extra income for the firm. Lets do not forget its all about profits.

I am more surprised that such little and insignificant faults are the only problems we stream viewers are experiencing. In comparison to Dallas and in comparison to any other broadcast in NA for eSports that receives so many viewers as MLG is getting, there is nothing to complain about.
Picking at the smallest details that are wrong or incorrect is going to hurt everyone more than just being gracious such an epic event is taking place without any hitches at all.
Be more appreciative is all I'm saying. Of all of the things that could go wrong and these two being the only notable ones, yet people are complaining about it. And on top of it, people go straight to the American stereotype. That's awesome.
magine you're IdrA. Those aren't epic fails so much as minor typographical/clerical mistakes.
