***************************************************************************************************************** CANCELED!!!
Unforeseeable circumstances caused the cancellation of the tournament. We hope to continue with a new and revived MM tournament sometime in the future.
***************************************************************************************************************** Welcome to the second installment of the Micro/Macro Tournament! We are doing things bigger, better, louder, greedier and sexier than ever before. This has been in the planning stages for awhile, so enjoy the ride!
All skill levels are welcome to join! To sign up, simply leave your information in a reply to this thread. Please include the following information in your reply: Bnet ID, Race, League/Rating. Only sign-up if you believe you will be able to play on the weekends just prior to the release of Starcraft 2 during the second phase of the beta. If you have any questions please leave a reply below or PM me and make sure to view the information below which can be found in the spoiler tags!

In addition to sign-ups we have almost every top figure in the SC community participating in the tournament. These 43 invited players are top seeded using traditional rules. Top seeds are paired with lower seeds in the 1st round. Also, top seeds will not meet up with each other until later rounds. This in compilation with the chance for "Regular Joe" players to play should make for some great games and an exciting, dynamic tournament.
$1125 Prize Pool!! Will we see top players and figures getting ousted in the first round to some up and coming names? Will we see new players making a name for themselves? Who will you root for? The big favorites defending their rightfully hard earned reputations or the unknown climbing tooth and nail through the competition? Should be exciting to see!

Every US player with a post that played SC2 at a platinum or lower level could enter. Our first two events were very impromptu; set up and run over the course of a single night. Both events though had a great show of support, attendance retention, and participation. You can find the brackets and results from our first two tournaments, here and here. From there we went "official" with the first titled Micro/Macro Tournament. 32 player, platinum and below carnage. The tournament was a huge success. Some great casting, smooth scheduling, lots of good games, and loads of fun. You can find the thread for the tournament here. There you can find the tournament brackets, replays, and links to VODS of the final and interview with the tournament champion. Due to these past successes and lots of support from participants for future tournaments, the only logical conclusion was to go bigger and better. Prize money, no skill level cap, more players, more maps, and loads of more fucking awesome SC2. Yeah this game rules, I know. The Tournament Name:The name “Micro/Macro Tournament” was used as the event title in consideration of learning these basic principles of the game, while also giving a feel of what it is like to play under pressure in a tournament setting. Which overall, is what the practice thread and the event(s) were/are all about. You never stop learning over the course of your life and SC2 is no different. The Micro/Macro tournament mantra holds true for any player that plays in it.

+ Show Spoiler + - All players of any skill level are allowed to play within the tournament.
- All participants are required to have access to the North American server of Bnet2.0.
- All games must be played on the North American Bnet2.0 server.
- Cannot play the same map more than once in a best of 3 or best of 5.
- Players are responsible for playing matches with their opponents in the round of 128, 64, 32, and 16 on the days and during the times stated under "When".
- Pending Blizzard's possible changes to naming/friend system or lack of changes, please use the PM system here on TL to get in touch with your opponents. The Sign-up list will include links to people's profiles so you can send them a PM.
- The players in the Ro8, Ro4, 3rd, and Grand Final will be invited to a game lobby by a tournament referee/administrator when it is your turn to play.
- If you have been waiting more than 10 minute for your opponent to come online and/or respond to your hails, please message a tournament admin.
- Being more than 20 minutes late results in the forfeit of a series. This references the start times for the respective rounds.
- The winner of a series is required to email replays to micr0macr0(at)hotmail(dot)com.
- Emails should be labeld as "Ro# - Player". "#" being the number of players in the round and "Player" being the player who won the series.
- Disconnecting during a game results in a loss for that game. Bnet2.0 has issues, everyone knows this, unfortunately though there is very little way to distinguish, legitimately, between a intentional disconnect and one due to a game bug.
- Match observers/casters are allowed, at the player(s) discretion. If a player has issues with observers, observers will be removed. With the exception of a tourney referee.
- Chat is allowed in-game between players. But if someone asks you to be quiet, you shut the hell up. No BM allowed.
- Any map listed in the "About" section is available for play in any round after the listed starter map with the exception of Lost Temple and Steppes of War after Ro64.
- Best Noob award is awarded to the "unknown" player that finishes the highest in the tournament out of the players in the sign-up list. With a few exceptions (dictated by the tournament).
- All referee decisions and/or judgement calls are final.
- Referee decisions are not limited by this ruleset. Referees are god.
- Last but not least, you have to have fun! ^.^

Seed Process: + Show Spoiler + Since this is going to inevitably come up, I'm going to do my best to answer it now.
No matchups were done manually. Every matchup is a result of the following process.
Players on the Invitee list were seeded based on their past performance in recognized tournaments and showmatches. Thank you Liquipedia II. The more wins you had and the better you placed, in general, the higher you were seeded. For example DIMAGA has seen great success and has the largest amount of tournament wins, to my knowledge of anyone, in the top tier. IdrA, in the second seed position, has consistently shown that he can win and maintain a top 3 position in many tournaments. Etc, etc, etc. Invitee list players fill positions 1-43 on the seed list.
Players that signed up for the tournament were seeded based on their provided league/rating description. This was done in several categories. >500 Diamond, Diamond, <500 Diamond, >500 Platinum, Platinum, <500 Platinum, and etc on down the line to silver. These categories of players were then alphabetized. For example, every player in diamond with a rating of 500 or higher are seed 44-68 in alphabetical order. Players that only provided "Diamond" in their description or gave ~500 for their rating, were placed in positions 69-80. Etc, etc, etc, on down the line to Silver.
The seed list was then implemented with what is known as a "traditional" seed. This means that in the first round the top seed is paired with the lowest seed, second highest seed is placed with second lowest and etc. This also ensures that top seeded players do not meet each other until later rounds. For example DIMAGA and IdrA, being 1 and 2 on the list, cannot meet each other until the grand finals or the third place match.
This seeding method is almost identical to the one used in tennis tournaments such as Wimbledon.

Not sure if it works or not MorroW, personally I have never used it. I do believe though that if you have a US account and go to the battle.net website and download SC2 from there under the US account it should set you up good to go. No need for a gateway change as the downloaded files will already come with the correct ones for that gateway/server.
Now I'm not 100% on that and someone else that has used it can likely give you a more thorough answer, but what I am sure on, is I do have 2 extra accounts that are linked to the US servers and you are welcome to use one for the tournament if you need to.
EDIT: Gomas has been added to sign-ups.

there should be no problem at all with playing on NA server from where ever. You will just need both accounts and the client switcher, or 2 installs.

First Insight for the day... I need to learn Russian. ^.^
People that have signed up above have been added. Welcome, welcome.
In regard to the few questions about the maps... We are still finalizing the map pool, a 7th map will be added, probably Python, once the author is reached, or one of the more favored SC2 1v1 Ladder maps. As the rules stand, each map can only be played once during a series. So yeah 1 more map to come still.
The general SC2 set of 1v1 maps has been removed from the pool for this tournament unless where noted. Yes, perhaps the SC1 maps may not be perfectly balanced for SC2 but the SC2 ladder maps weren't perfect either. My belief is that the SC1 maps will bring about some interesting play not seen before in SC2, and by themselves are something new that few people have seen yet or played on in a big SC2 tournament. We want things to be legitimate, but we are also looking for fun. I have played on these maps, and they are fun!
In regard to not deciding to do preliminaries. You can consider this entire tournament a preliminary of a sort. The Micro Macro tourneys are going to be around for awhile. Our first post-release tournament, which will be a double elimination tournament, will likely take into consideration the results from this one. Top 64 players and etc.
Note: As the post release tournament is a ways out, nothing I just said in regards to it is concrete and many things could change.

Once the final bracket is posted and you and your opponent wish to do your games, yes you may play earlier. You may play your first round games eariler as long as the results are still submitted by 4pm EST on Saturday, the 10th. The 12pm EST time is only to facilitate those players who have difficulty with scheduling their matches and is considered the "official" start time of the ro128.
EDIT: I love announcing good news. Good news come shortly.

OP has been updated to further clarify that sign-ups closed 2 pages ago. People that continue to post are welcome to do so but they will be placed on an alternates list.
The alternates list is being created in the likely instance that a few Round 1 players will not show up (for whatever reason as this does happen sometimes) or we have people drop out before hand. If you are on the list, you would be filling that spot. Obviously though, after the first round, no more alternates are allowed.
Thanks everyone! We got a great tournament going and I only see things getting better, and the stakes will likely keep getting higher as we get closer to our start date! Hype!

On June 18 2010 02:13 Tozar wrote: Rats, just 3 posts away from getting in. I assume I am on the waiting list. Are you going to fill spots Sunday if some invitees don't reply?
As we currently stand, we are at 128 players, the maximum. This is the confirmed invited players and the players currently in the sign-up list.
As far as filling spots go, the players on the invitee pending and maybe list get priority over players on the sign-up list through Saturday. For example if we have a person on the invitee pending list confirm their invite tomorrow, we would be removing one person from the sign-up list starting with the last addition. Doing that in order to maintain our 128 player maximum.
The sign-up alternate list is ordered from the first person to post after we reached our maximum, to the last person. First person on the alternate list gets priority for any spots that opens on the sign-up list after Saturday when the invites are closed.
Invited players that do not make the Saturday deadline, are put into an alternate list for other invited players that may have to cancel due to emergency plans or etc. If no invited players can be found to fill those vacant slots, we will move to the sign up alternates.
That sounds way more confusing than it really is. To sum it up. We have two alternate lists, invited players and sign-ups; ordered first to last post. Invited players get placement priority over sign-ups through Saturday.
But yeah, we got a long ways to go until the start of the tournament, over 3 weeks. So quite likely we will be having a fair number of people drop out between now and July 10th.

I say best noob = $100 xD
That makes me wonder... how will you monitor who's actually "unknown"? I mean I have 2 beta keys. I can simply sign up with the other name or whatever just to take the easy $50 (or $100). Or sign up twice... or whatever lil sneaky shit some one might pull in order to get an easy $50...... (Stewie in second phase of beta could actually be Nony or something (No offense))
Just wondering... -.-

There is no 100% guaranteed way to keep people from doing that. You have to go on the honor system, which is the crux of all large public online tournaments as anybody can proxy, use different emails, and etc.
It is also not limited to cases like the Micro Macro "Best Noob" award. You can do it in any sort of open online tournament especially ones with a window to play your games. Sign up under two accounts and on the chance that you have to play yourself on the other account, just not show up on it and you get an automatic bye.
All of which are very bad things to do. You get caught, I would say goodbye to those two accounts ever being invited again to any sort of tournament.
That is also why we are likely to hold the Best Noob award at 50 dollars. Due to, unfortunately, the risk of players ruining the fun for everyone by doing just what you mentioned.

Alternate list will be going up the same time as the brackets, tomorrow. We were waiting on invitees to accept their invites, tomorrow is the last day.

And if all the invites aren't accepted, does that allow for a larger bracket (Or in other words more noninvitees to participate)? Just curious.

In regard to increasing the tournament beyond 128, it's a no-go for this tournament. Perhaps for our first post-release tournament, we'll bump things to 256, but this time around we're sticking to something a bit more manageable. Especially with the second phase of the beta still being such a large unknown at this point. No official start date by Blizzard, nor a closing date.
.

well since you didnt respond to my last pm ill address it here live casts are retarded. this is an international tournament, you're inviting players from all over the world. this gives you a responsibility to be at least somewhat accommodating, instead of asking me to come play and then telling me that itll have to be at 5 am. also live casting means that people will be able to cheat, theres no way to check or prevent it. even if you do it with a decent sized delay they can still have a friend relaying information that could make a difference in the game.
live casting also means that theres a very good chance that there will be technical problems that have to be solved on the spot resulting in dead time during the casts.
it introduces so many problems and the only real benefit is appeasing the morons who cant appreciate a cast from replays.

Yeah, seriously. Who gives a shit about live casts? Never understood why people couldn't get past the psychological block of having to see games as they're going down.
I mean, fuck, have you ever rented a DVD? Netflix?

On June 20 2010 00:54 IdrA wrote: well since you didnt respond to my last pm ill address it here live casts are retarded. this is an international tournament, you're inviting players from all over the world. this gives you a responsibility to be at least somewhat accommodating, instead of asking me to come play and then telling me that itll have to be at 5 am. also live casting means that people will be able to cheat, theres no way to check or prevent it. even if you do it with a decent sized delay they can still have a friend relaying information that could make a difference in the game.
live casting also means that theres a very good chance that there will be technical problems that have to be solved on the spot resulting in dead time during the casts.
it introduces so many problems and the only real benefit is appeasing the morons who cant appreciate a cast from replays.
You didn't give me anything to respond to IdrA. All you did is reiterate your first message twice to me which was that you couldn't make certain times and as the current times are listed in the OP I left it at that, until I had something else to notify you about, which I didn't (times have not changed yet).
You could of PM'd me with the concerns you have listed above but since we all know you are big on the drama (more power to ya), we'll continue it here. Live casting, yes it is prone to cheating and yes it is prone to technical issues, but nothing recorded can catch that magic of doing live events even if they are solely online. Being located in the South Korean scene as you are, you should know this best. What we can possibly do, and I'll have to talk to the streamers, is somehow introducing a time delay to the cast. 1 minute, 2 minutes, or etc, if there is anyway that is possible I'm sure that is something our casters can manage to do. These guys know their stuff as they are the best in the business.
Perhaps I am just naive and have too much faith in people but I would LIKE to think that the people that are playing in the final games, are respectable people. I believe you are a respectable person IdrA, in the respect that you don't cheat. Which in any sport is the most important trait a person can have, in-fact it is THE trait to have. I think many of the better SC2 players out there are the same.
The round of 128 through the round of 16 is not being casted though, as has been stated both in the PM I sent you and in the OP. The times there (as they currently stand) are flexible as long as you get in your replays for the rounds by their announced respective deadlines. The times mentioned, 12pm EST and 5PM EST, are flexible and are there solely to help and assist those player matchups that have trouble scheduling on their own. For example if two players cannot come to an agreement on when to play, their series(s) officially start at the noted times.
If you can play IdrA we still would love to have you play. If you can play please send me a PM and we will add you to the confirmed list. We'll do our utmost accommodate you as best as we can.
Note: Now yes we also have to depend on Blizzard to not screw things over as well (which frankly is the biggest issue in my eyes), but up-times on the weekends have tended to be very good.

Would you rather watch the World Cup live or recorded a week later with the knowledge that you may find out the results before hand.
For example to use the HDH, as great a tournament as it was, as an example... It was extremely easy if you knew where to look to find out the results of all those matches before the recordings were livestreamed. From there it is only a simple thing for one person to spam every forum everywhere with the results to ruin it for basically everyone besides those living under a rock.

i told you what times i could not play, that certainly invites a response.
what magic? live EVENTS are awesome because theyre live. live casts are nothing. you'll have a handful of idiots bitching that you're casting from a replay and otherwise itll be exactly the same.
you have way too much faith in people. i hate to bring it up every time this discussion is had because hes a good guy who i respect a lot, but dimaga cheated in tsl. he was one of the best players in europe, hes an awesome guy. and he cheated. the honor system does not work, and you're gonna have a lot of players who are much less known and respected than him or me or whitera playing. on what basis do you trust them?
"Ro8-Final is largely set in stone as those are casted live." from your pm. so accommodate as best you can means not at all?
ill play but ill be forfeiting in the ro8 if you insist on this idiocy.
disconnects in the middle of a live casted match, very high likelihood of cheating, me, artosis, tasteless, dapollo playing in the middle of the night... those things ruin the tournament far more than people digging through match lists and finding the results. admins were very good about deleting and banning spoiler posts in hdh. if you cast a few hours after the match is played that is not a legit concern. hdh delayed some of the broadcasts for a week or more and was a massive success.

Note: When I said "largely set in stone" I meant "not entirely set in stone, there is room for adjustment". Largely =/= entirely.

ya cuz saying the match times are largely set in stone after already posting a broadcast schedule definitely implies that its gonna be a flexible schedule.

WARNING: The following post consists only of my opinions. Seeing as how I am just another nooby poster in this community, I understand and accept that my opinions hold no real value or weight. Just figured I'd speak my mind. ------------
I doubt any of the top players will watch the stream, but it's always a possibility. The same problem with live television programming is present here. You never know what can happen.
IE: "I'ma let you finish, but I just wanted you to know that beyonce had the best video of all time"
A fanboy could randomly whisper his/her idol and tell him something important from the stream. That specific example of a potential problem depends on the communication set-up of phase 2 of the beta, but i'm sure other potential problems exist.
Point being, when it's live, the door is open to just about any problem, and there is a lot more pressure to deal with problems as quickly as possible (and sometimes, quick isn't possible). It just adds a risk factor.
I'll take a page out of one of my finance textbooks. Is the additional expected return of casting games live greater than the risk added? It all depends on the risk aversion parameters of the people in charge.
Personally, I do find that watching games live is far more exciting than watching replays with commentating, but I understand the concerns. It's a tough call. In the last micro/macro tournament, it was abundantly clear that my opponent in the finals was getting fed information from the stream. Obviously players in a bronze to plat tournament aren't held to the same standards as the legitimate progamers involved in this second tournament, but we're still the same species. If one human being can decide to cheat in the finals of one of the biggest tournaments he's ever been involved in (ie: the last micro/macro for the bronze-plat players involved), it is entirely possible for someone else to do the same, whether he's a progamer or not.
In summation... who knows meng. I'm sure at the end of the day, whether it's live or delayed, the tournament will still be a boatload of fun... which i think is the point of having tournaments and playing the game, no?
|
The solution. Its simple.
add a delay to the live cast of about 3-5 minuets.
Either that, or cast from replays.
I think there needs to be a bit more professionalism and/or respect when regarding the players in this tournament.
doing a live stream of anyone (that can tune in), playing for competition would be irresponsible and disrespectful. Since if they play fair, and work really hard, and this can be all undone by the unfair advantage of the omniscient spectator.
|
I love live streamed games, however in a tournament where there will be 80 players that no one has ever heard of I find it very hard to believe that not one of them will cheat. I would much prefer it to be a 5 minute + delay or a replay cast as this is a signup tourney. Even if it is a replay tourney, it wouldn't be as 'fun' to watch but that would be nothing compared to the blow dealt to the players, the viewers, the sponsors, and esports if someone were to cheat in a 700 dollar prize pool tournament .
Although, I must say to Idra, that in my opinion what you said about forfeiting in the round of 8 if he insists on this 'idiocy' is very unsportsmanlike and I would expect more from a player of your calibur. Ruining someones tournament because you didn't like the way he set it up would be very childish, and in my opinion, a much better way to get your opinion across would be to simply boycott the tournament and inform other players who may have scheduling issues to do so as well.
Best of luck to you all!
|
I don't get the logic behind live casting is more fun than replay casting. The only downside of replay casting is the slight possibility of spoilers. If you are that concerned about spoilers, then don't snoop around threads that you suspect would spoil the tournament. I'm also sure that the tournament and SC2 in general is not popular enough to entice people to say "IdrA wins the Micro Macro 2 Finals" (I hope) over a Wal-Mart intercom. Even if the results get spoiled, don't you want to see how the events get spoiled? In Romeo and Juliet, they basically spoil the play in the prologue, but it was still popular because everyone wanted to know how the events play out.
However, live casting has many problems. The first and big one is cheating. It is easy to cheat. Get a friend to watch the stream and relay you info via Battle.net itself or something like ventrilo. I don't see how you could just dismiss this possibility. This is a big deal. You could trust all you like, but not everyone is honorable, and in a high level tournament like this, you should make the elimination of cheating one of your top priorities.
You also have technical difficulties to deal with. Sure, a replay cast has technical difficulties, but you could pause the replay and fix it. If the stream goes down or gets massive lag in a live cast, well we just missed part of the tournament and we have to wait a few days/weeks for VODs to be released, if they ever are released. If it is a crucial part of the match, I would hate to have a stream shut down or experience any kind of technical difficulty.
The "magic" of live events doesn't exist for me. And I'm sure the "magic" would easily turn in to turmoil if technical difficulties would occur during crucial parts of the games. I still get the same "magic" from a replay because I don't know the results, and even if I would, I wet my pants just to see how the events unfold. I knew the results of the 3rd place HDH before I watched the VODs, but they were still exciting as ever because they were great games. Please replay cast the tournament. I don't want IdrA to (or anyone for that matter, but I'm IdrA fanboy) lose from cheating, nor do I want an event ruined because of technical difficulties.

I don't think we have the facilities to add a specific delay, with ustream or livestream.
The really simple solution is to just record the entire set of games, along with the casts, and simply stream the recorded video file straight afterwards. HDH did this for the final I believe. No need to cast from replays and worry about covering the progress bar, and we'll have the game streamed minutes after the games are played.

All following dates/times are approximate pending the release by Blizzard of start dates for the second phase of beta.
you also need to change your disconnect rule, disconnect=auto loss given bnet2 is utterly retarded.

money involved + online tourney + live casting = really really really really bad.
Do you know something TSL1-2 didn't? Because there is a reason the biggest online tourneys have not done that..
There is absolutely no logical reason aside from stubbornness or some ignorant notion of blind social faith (ignoring proof otherwise) to stick to something as Utopian as live casting final rounds of a cash tourney that is online.
Additionally it looks WAY better to say "ro4 casted at 21 CET on X date" rather than "ro4 will start at 21 CET on X date" then discover that 1 of the casters can't do X or they lag or livestream goes down or 1 of the 3k people watching msgs one of the players who cannot block them because bnet2.0 is bad and then he KNOWS someone is going DT etc etc etc...
That is all NOT COUNTING someone purposely cheating which is 1k% more likely with anything over 100$ on the line.

So I have been thinking about what other people said about the possible faults in how the tornament is set up, but i really like the idea of this tournament so I've decided to offer some (almost certainly bad) solutions. 1.After the livestream, players have to send the replays ASAP. This way you can see if they got a person whispering them. I think that works.... Problems With this: Pretty sure there are other ways of communication you could get metagame info, for example ventrilo or something. If you could deal with that somehow also, maybe this would be better. 2.For the Ro8 and on, you could get the players to play on seperate accounts with hidden emails so then they can't be whispered. Problems with This: Players would have to have other accounts then, possibly they could share the hidden email.
Just offering some suggestions. Since it seems that the host is really firm in wanting live games, maybe we could find another workaround like these solutions or (almost certainliy) better ones suggested by other people.

You think it would reduce the cheating, but it only makes it more annoying to cheat. If the person is able and wants to cheat, then he will cheat. So doing this does nothing to stop cheating, just makes the tournament more tedious.

Brackets will be going up today in addition to that we'll have the ordered alternate list posted shortly after.
The deadline for the invitee list has come and gone as well. People on the invitee pending and maybe list will now be used as alternates for other invitees in the case that someone has to drop out. They will not be added to the bracket(s) until that happens.

After Devastation (today is the last day) is finished and I get the chance to iron out details with streamers, we'll be doing an announcement about live or recorded casts. Just hang tight people. The games don't officially start casted or otherwise for 3 weeks and we don't even have the beta yet, please be patient.
And the comment about more respect being given to the players. It goes both ways, it takes a lot of work to get something of this magnitude together. Sponsors, players, streamers, casters, working out organization, schedules, creating threads, research, creating videos and banners, promotion, hundreds of PMs and emails, and the spending of money and multiple dozens of hours of work. Sometimes it feels like the participants forget these things.
Yes I've dumped around 500 dollars of my personal finances into this tournament, over the course of software, prize pool contributions and paying for ads on facebook and elsewhere. So I apologize if I offend anyone but I am straight to the point, and I don't grovel. I do hope everyone has fun in this tournament and I do look forward to it a lot! I'm sure all of you do as well.
EDIT: Brackets are created, just finalizing them before they are released.

Ah. Yeah definitely understandable.
On another note, I was in the shower this morning dreaming of starcraft as I usually do, and it occured to me that Lucifron wasn't on the list of players invited. I suppose he isn't that well known in sc2, but he was a top dog in WC3 and i've seen some pretty impressive replays of him in sc2. I would like to suggest considering Lucifron for future micro/macro tournament invites. He tends to have some pretty creative play.

Seeding Information:
Since this is going to inevitably come up, I'm going to do my best to answer it now.

Morning ya'll or whatever the time may be for you. As we now have 50 people on the alternates list we will be closing sign-ups entirely. Thank you to everyone that signed up. For those of you that won't be able to play, you should definitely look forward to the many VODs, replays, and casts! Replays alone are going to number in the hundreds for this tournament... So yeah, you'll have days worth of stuff to watch if you wanna see every match.
|
Stew, what's the situation with casting going to be? You posted you'd let us know what the casting situation would be back on page 3 or 4, many many days ago. I'm really interested to see if this is going to be more on the professional side of things, or if it's more of a thrown together thing that got bigger than imagined. Been excited to find out if the amazing Mr. Sean Plott might be commentating since he isn't participating. Tell us already! =p

I've done a few updates throughout the thread, but it's the same situation. We are waiting on streamers to get back from Devastation 2010 (a big fighting game event in Phoenix) before we do any sort of announcement as they have been extremely busy all weekend and were on the road for most of last week. I promised them I would wait until early this week (maybe tomorrow), when they got back home "back down to earth", before we ironed out the details.
Until then, I really don't' want to confirm a stream before I give them a chance to talk with me as they among a few others are the best in the "business".
Note: When we do the "official" stream announcement, it will include a definite answer on recorded, time delayed, or live casts.
EDIT: The invitation was given out to Day[9] but as he is extremely busy we have yet to receive a response from him. He is aware of the event though so we are awaiting a response from him whenever he gets time.

Yes, Check out the recent VODs of him vs his brother Day[9]. While I don't think he is on the level of say Idra, He is definitely a top level player. He actually reminds me of TLO a little using tactics and tricks to gain an edge rather than focusing on macro mechanics.
Just my thoughts. GL

Lol for the best noob award I can imagine some people simply playing ridiculously random and horrible for the purpose of clinching the prize money. Should make for a hopefully funny watch.

How would you define a "best noob"? of the non-invited people, who lasts the longest? I'm not sure that's entirely fair

Did you read the OP?
Highest placed "unknown" player gets the prize... if you're "known" you shouldn't worry about it...
Simple as that.
If I get placed the highest - I win $50! (After I beat ThisIsJimmy and Machine ^^)

Stream announcement coming today! I swear to god, I promise. If not I can tell you who to blame and tar and feather.
In regard to the best noob award. That is up for grabs for largely everyone in the sign-up pool of players. The highest placed player in that group gets $50 dollars.
Of course there are a few people in the sign-up list that are known, like SUGGY, bubba, Azz, skY, and some others. Those players are exempt as they are relatively known players but did not make it on to the invitee list this time around.

It seems to me that it likely that there will be a tie for how far the unknowns get (say the last 4 of them lose in round 5) will there be a bracket amongst them to determine the winner?

Exchanged emails with them last week and incidentally they were planning on having their quarterly sponsorship program meeting on Friday. We've been added to their twitter page (they're following the Micro Macro 2 twitter) so I plan to hopefully announce good news in the near future! Very true. We'll be doing something similar to what you mentioned or we'll put it up to community poll. For example post replays of their rounds and their round records and say, out of these finalists who should win "Best Noob".
I'll see what we can do and make sure I get that announced before hand, so everyone is in the know.
On June 24 2010 09:14 captainwaffles wrote: The best noob thing, how does one win that? lol
Be among the highest finishing unknown (meaning you aren't a "household" name in the SC community) players from the sign-up list. The prize could similarly be called "Rookie of the Tournament", similar to the rookie of the year award in baseball or other sports.
For example we do have some people on the sign-up list like SUGGY, bubba, skY, Azz and a few others, that are exempt from this prize as they are already fairly well known in the community. They just didn't get added to the invite list this time around. The prize is solely aimed at players that are making a name for themselves for the first time.
I added a cut-down description of the prize in the rules earlier this morning, it's near the bottom, to hopefully help people understand the prize a bit better.

http://www.djwheat.tv/Coming to a Micro Macro 2 Tournament near you... *Note: As the day progresses, this and the OP will be updated with further information regarding the stream. Due to the logistics of the tournament, uncertainty about the second phase of beta, and a desire to provide the best schedule/quality to both the viewers and the players, it is taking some time. I don't want to be posting anymore schedules or etc, unless we have them pretty much finalized. But rest assured, cheating via stream will not be an option.

I would like to announce and welcome ReVival to the tournament referee and administration team.
ReVival helped extensively with match-ups, tabulating scores, keeping players informed, referee calls and etc over the course of the last tournament and will be assisting in much the same way for Micro Macro 2. Once the beta returns and people are able to start playing their early rounds matches, he (among a few others including myself) will be available to help those players who need assistance or questions answered.

Yeah unfortunately we could not invite everyone, but that's why the tournament also had a sign-up period. We allowed the first ~85 players to sign-up and play regardless of their league, rating or rank. You can find a list of their names and races in the spoiler tag in the OP under the "Sign Ups" banner.

I don't think you are alone in getting it confused with the UMS maps. After this tournament though, that should be the last time it gets confused. :D
TTOne, nah, the alternate list is currently closed for the tournament. 50 people are already signed up as back-ups, which is our limit. You should expect to be playing in the next tournament though.

Yeah, should be some pretty awesome games. It'll most definitely keep things fresh as very few tournaments have done anything except the same ladder maps for months now. The few pro games that have been played on these maps have been really good, and have shown a really good shake-up of tactics. No more "business as usual" on these maps. The maps have been posted in that super sexy OP for awhile now, but I'll add it here for anyone too lazy to click a spoiler tag. Map overviews/pictures you'll have to go to the OP for though.
Map Pool:
SC1 Remakes
Match Point Chupung Ryeong Tornado Fighting Spirit Python* Destination
All-new Maps
Impervious
SC2 Maps:
Lost Temple Steppes of War
*Not officially in the pool yet.

Hey Gfresh,
Thanks. Yeah it has come a long ways hasn't it, and it only gets better from here.
As far as the maps... The map creators and myself are making sure the maps are in top-notch shape before we release any download links. I'll talk to the guys and get a date (next week sometime is probable) for a private release to all tournament participants. We likely will not be doing any sort of public release, due to people pirating the maps and publishing them under their own names in the beta, until after the maps have been all been published by the actual creators. This is also due to the fact that the map loading screens are being customized for this specific tournament.

I can't wait for this tournament!
|
Hey, HDStarcraft and Barrin bumped the thread, now I don't have to double post! Thanks guys! I'm starting to blame the tournament name, everyone thinks this is a UMS tour and ignores the thread, lol. This is most definitely NOT that, and they are missing out unfortunately. And yes, I'm going to toot the horn a bit; this is what they are missing.
MM2 has one of the biggest prize pool out there right now ($1125) from a combination of super supportive sponsors and community members. 1st place takes away over $500 cash! With prizes being awarded to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and best noob as well! If you have been wanting to contribute to a tourney, don't be shy! Help support us even more! Heck you may even get a front row seat to the action if you are nice about it.
We have the biggest pro line up of any tournament currently and possibly any previous SC2 tournament. Almost every pro player from NA and EU is aboard to play, creating a 43+ player strong SC2 nerd dream. If you know their name, they are likely in the brackets. If they aren't, you can bet they'll be for MM3. Then on top of that we have 85 of the most ambitious community members out there willing to fight against the best. Creating a 128 player strong, tooth and nail battle to the top.
The sickest streamer in the entire eSports scene, none other than djWHEAT and friends. Who will be streaming casts of the Round of 8 and all subsequent matches!
The best BW->SC2 1v1 melee maps: Chupung Ryeong, Fighting Spirit, Destination, Match Point, and others.
We got pages everywhere; youtube, facebook (rabble rabble, hate facebook, rabble rabble), twitter, and any other social medium you can think of. If you want us listed somewhere we are not, shout out and we'll get it done. Well not counting myspace, who uses THAT anymore?!
Custom map loading screens and shit even more stuff planned for when the tourney kicks off. Like movies, VODs, replays of every match organized for easy access and ease, and more.
We have player interviews this upcoming week as well. Both from the pro lineup, and from the sign-up list!
Sponsor deals, exclusive to TL members and Micro Macro 2 tournament followers. Bargains anyone? Thinking about buying PC parts or a clan ventrilo server for the release of SC2? Consider these guys as they support SC2 and are big TL fans. We want these guys to continue supporting the eSports scene, give them your love!
Announcement ASAP of our second and possibly third caster that will be alongside WHEAT. Maybe *Cough* Day9 and Chill *Cough*. That's wheat's business though, so hound him about the casting. I don't think he hears it enough from me. Joking. But no really, hound him still. ;-)
Releasing our final schedule ASAP as soon as Blizzard gives us a firm notice on Phase 2 beta dates. I need blue!
So yeah HYPE this tourney up! Tell your parents, your friends, your pets, hell post up flyers in your neighborhood, your local hang-out, everywhere. It's going to be freaking insane and the players, casters and sponsors, deserve all the hype you guys can create! Super stoked about this tournament fellas, you all should be too, this is going to be extremely epic. Heck if HDStarcraft is stoked for things to get underway, one of the men behind HDH, I think that tells you good things.
Whew, ok, back to tournament work.
EDIT: Barrin, a movie? Only if we go out to dinner afterwards. EDIT2: Hmm, I was really excited when I typed all that wasn't I. Hmm whatever, I am looking forward to the tournament.

We have a lovely rule section that answers these questions! Please check it out as it is very important that all tournament participants are familiar with the tourney rules. But, here are the answers anyways.
All the maps listed in the "About" section of the OP are available during the ro128 and ro64. This currently includes and only includes...
Lost Temple Steppes of War Destination Fighting Spirit Chupung Ryeong Match Point Impervious Tornado
You are not allowed to use a map more than once during a round. Every round also has a designated starter map. The map listed for that round in the "About" section of the OP is that round's starter. So in the case of the ro128, the starter is Lost Temple, and in the case of the ro64, it is Steppes of War.
Enjoy the tournament.

Actually it is. I actually misclicked to find out it was a $700+ tournament because I would never intentionally click a thread named Micro Macro Tournament. I thought this was a $0 tournament for players gold league or below, and I'm sure many others thought so as well. Ofc they pretty much invited anyone who's been "active" in the scene anyways so it's not that big of a deal.

It isn't. Click the thread and read. Takes five minutes and you're good. Anyone saying it is hard to read part of a thread is just lazy.

Do you click every thread on TeamLiquid?
Anyone interested in playing in a competitive 1v1 tournament would not click a thread called Micro Macro Tournament or Sunken Defense tournament. Anyone who read the first thread would remember it's a free tournament for gold league players or below, and anyone who didn't would think it was a UMS tournament.
No one is bashing the author or host of the tournament, just pointing out the name isn't very fitting, but it doesn't matter really since he invited almost everyone non-asia player in the "scene". I don't know what you're agenda is but what are you trying to argue about. I guess not clicking every thread on TeamLiquid to find out if it something entirely different from the topic title would make you "lazy?"

Yes it does make you lazy. There's only about 5 or so new tournament threads a week. Figure about 2 minutes a thread and your using up 10 minutes out of your 10,080 you get a week. If you can't dedicate a whole .1% (or whatever the math is) of your week to checking these things than you probably don't need to play in it.

Not everyone is as infatuated with the "scene" as you are. Why would I click every tournament thread named with a UMS name just to find out if it's randomly a $1000 tournament. So all of you people are telling me you would click the thread if it was named Tower Defense Gold League Tournament? Good for you I suppose, I click threads based on what their topic title is. I don't care about joining every tournament or trying to cast every potential tournament like you do.

And you're just retarded. All the people "active" or "known" in the US / Euro scene didn't JOIN this tournament, they were invited. I am not sure about your logic there. If the topic was called this then they are only looking for gold league players otherwise why put gold league? That was pretty bad but yes if you like to play tournaments you will click every new one that comes up because its not like there are a ton of them.

I would be quick to point out that a good majority of the top players are "infatuated" with the scene. On average very ITL has 20-30 top players watching every single ITL.
Staying current with the "scene" will only help you stay on top of your game. It was these kinds of events that have changed conventional ways of playing SC. It was these events (not iCCup ones only, all events in general) that provided a top level proving ground to show new starts and ideas.
Where would SC2 be if TLO had not had his coming out party vs. Nazgul at TLI? (I think TLI. Correct me if I'm wrong.) The game could be months behind on strategies. Before that match easily 98% of my matches against all races where based on one base. That proved on a big stage that expanding in SC2 was possible (previously thought to be impossible).
Event he subtle things like the effectiveness of BC's vs. Thors (QXC vs. KawaiiRice. ITL 4 Game 2), Baneling Drop+Fungal Growth is sick (CatZ. ITL), Blink + Destructible rocks is fun (Nony. TLI), or why Mech was/is completely broken (QXC vs Sheth. ITL X).
It's events like these where the game is perfected.
I don't care about joining every tournament or trying to cast every potential tournament like you do.
You should.
And you're just retarded. All the people "active" or "known" in the US / Euro scene didn't JOIN this tournament, they were invited. When logic fails use big words I guess.
You know why these guys were invited? They have proved themselves starting with the free/$100 tournaments.
Let me tell you about a player I know whom we should call AuK (to protect his identity). He was not invited to a big tournament we shall call the GSG Invitational. AuK was upset and thought he deserved to play but people did not know him that well. So what did AuK do? he hit me and every tournament organizer in the book up screaming "LET ME PLAY. I WILL ROFL STOMP NEWBS ALL DAY! AuK SMASH!" He won a lot in those tournaments and events. Now AuK is regarded as one of the top Protoss players in the world and is a shoe in for the GSG #2 (I would have to imagine at least). He didn't sit there and pout about a thread name....

All this talk about horrible tourney name is irrelevant.
The sign-up has successful and seems like the tourney is ready to begin when scheduled. Unlikely it would be changed for the next tourney hosted by stewker since this one is sure to be a success.
Now everyone whining knows better. Hope to see you sign up for the next M/M tourney.

there is a for-sure phase 2 but it could be as late as the 13th (that is exactly two weeks before launch and they told us phase two would be only two weeks long)
some statements have even hinted at the beta running a few days after release, but who knows, for blizzard mid april was april 25, so early july can be the 13th

He thought he was going to play LAVA xD
Sucks that our frigid friend won't play tho. May I ask why?

nope a backup and that should be waffles. That should be your opponent.
I am trying to contact my opponent (he wont' respond). And I won't be able to play on saturday at 10 am I won't be able to play till like 6 my time (8 est) I dont' see why you can't have a deadline for both rounds by like 11 or something.
I do know though that if I have to forfeit (what a shock the guy doesn't read his pm's.) He's not gonna show up and I can actually play the next round. Sigh .

Highly recommend you create an mIRC channel where people can meet.
Also, Cheese/azhang if you see this, check your pm plz.
The following maps don't seem to be up yet: Destination, Chupung Ryeong, Impervious, Tornado.
Might want to postpone, I dunno.

My opponent is not responding to PMs. I don't have any of the non-Blizz maps...

Might want to postpone, I dunno. Tornado is called "Neo Tornado," I published it last night. Try searching that, if there's a problem I'll look into it later tonight. Impervious should also be up.
EDIT: both of those maps have the following bug:
Maps are uploaded, but i have a terrific bug. For Micro/Macro 2, I present to you: <font size="6">SNOW GEYSERS AND D-ROCKS</font> It's a bug in the editor or something, I have no idea how to fix it. If you know, PM me. This is present on both Neo Tornado and Impervious, they are on the same tileset
Maybe that's why they aren't working?

Saturday, July 10th, - 17:00 GMT (+00:00) , Replays/Results submitted by 4:00 EST
Round of 64: Saturday, July 10th - 5:00 EST, Replays/Results submitted by 12:00 EST
How come the time thing doesn't work here? oh I get it. (weird I lost my typing cursor just now)
Anyways, This is 10am PST - 3pm with submissions 2pm and 10pm
PS-
- Disconnecting during a game results in a loss for that game. Bnet2.0 has issues, everyone knows this, unfortunately though there is very little way to distinguish, legitimately, between a intentional disconnect and one due to a game bug.
What happens if server disc or both players drop or something like that ? Do they both get a loss making the series 1-1 and whoever wins the next wins the series? What happens if it was already 1-0 or 1-1?
PPS- What's with all the weird maps, and striking maps from pool after r64?

WHERE IS STEWKER?!?!
Honestly, I don't see how we can actually start playing games/submitting replays when the host is afk.
I mean are we supposed to coordinate everything ourselves?! (No offense)
I think we should just postpone. That way some of our favorite members can participate as well! I mean pancake beerfest is no joke! I wish I could attend! XD
What do you guys think?!

With the amount of people not answering their PM's and no one here to "officially" replace them, I think postponing is the best option we have atm.
Not to mention everyone has to worry about their GGI matches as well. (Once again, no offense)

Go to Create Game and in the dropdown menu click "published" or "popular" instead of BlizzMaps. Then either search name or scroll down and keep "show more" until you find the map you're looking for!

He's a famous player so I guess an option would be to pm another famous player whos NOT banned from Teamliquid. Then you could ask whoever you PM to find out Dimaga's identification numbers. Hopefully someone nice would do that.

What do you guys think?! Hey ReVival here (Assistant Admin), It seems like StewKer is a little MIA at the moment, And i felt that i should make a post as the Assistant Admin. I have tried to contact him via PM and Email and have not gotten a response from either. He did say in a previous PM that he would give me the INFO to the MM2 email so I could help him verify the games, Once the beta came back up. But I never got the information before he went missing So I can't at the moment verify any games. I am also not quite sure how to proceed since StewKer never left any instructions in-case this happened (It would be a different story if he had given the account info. earlier)
Two viable options at the moment are 1. I create a new email and forward games to that email and the MM2 email so i can verify until StewKer returns. I'm not sure how many will be for this since I have quite a low number of post on TL.net and 2. Would be to postpone until StewKer comes back. Or 3. Just continue to send games in the MM2 email account and hope StewKer comes back on time. (Doesn't seem viable to me, Since I have had no contact with Stewker what so ever.
Proves my point.
Who, here, is authorized to decide who plays who, besides StewKer? While I do have Assistant Admin/Referee rights I don't feel comfortable changing the matches since StewKer never told me specifically how Alternatives would actually work, my guess is just go from the top of the list.
Let me Know what you guys the players want to do, so I can think of a way to proceed.
PS- My B.Net info is ReVival (254) if you need to contact me, I will help with what I can in StewKer's absence

Wow. Lol this is how NOT to run a tourney. Seems like everyone is running amok! I wish we could postpone but whatever. It is what it is.
I just hope StewKer is ok. (I mean even if my computer blew up, I'd still have means of getting online and posting at least once in a day!)
I also hope the Sponsors didn't just give money up-front! XD
|
|
Perhaps this is why we shouldn't give money to random people who pop up and make pretty banners and try to host tournaments.
|
Micro Macro 2 Participants/Followers:
The tournament is being postponed due to several issues that are going on that are unfortunately unavoidable, and are not something that could have been planned for. I'm sure everyone will understand that. As the head administrator and the main organizer for the majority of the tournament functions, from corresponding with tournament sponsors, money prize transfers, to assisting the assistant admins with games, I do not feel comfortable having the tournament prior to the release of the game during the beta as scheduled and for things to go smoothly; as I'm sure everyone wants them too. It is only one day prior to the previously announced starting date, but I believe this is the right choice. The following is my situations so people know where I am coming from and what brought me to this decision.
First and foremost my father was in an extreme motorcycle accident Wednesday evening (a lady turned left in front of him while he was going the opposite direction at 65 mph, the posted speedlimit) and had to be air-lifted to Salt Lake City from where we live (a distance of several hundred miles) due to the extent of his injuries. Which at the time were extremely life threatening (as of writing this, he has stabilized to a degree, thank god he's the toughest man I know). It's scary to hear people in the emergency throwing out taglines that you only hear in movies like "bleeding out" and "pulverized". SLC has the best specialists and ability to care for my what my father needs in the entire northwest United States and I feel like he is in good hands. Anyways after he was air-lifted, my family and I then immediately traveled to SLC the same evening driving straight through the night.
I know that the week and a half prior has also had quite a bit of lack of communication as well, which was due to work and an issue with my computer and largely being unable to get online. I got back online Wednesday afternoon though after I was able to put things back together and replace my motherboard and other fried components. I fired off a twitter message to that effect that I was back online and would be getting things ready for the beginning of the tournament, but soon after that I got the phone call from my brother about my father.
As of this post it is Saturday at 12am and I'm sitting in a hotel room, after getting no sleep since Wednesday morning. It's the first somewhat calm chance I have had to inform anyone of what is going on as we have been going a mile a minute, no sleep, since Wednesday evening. We stayed the night in the hospital on Thursday.
But anyways just in conclusion and to reiterate as stated above, the Micro Macro 2 Tourney is to be postponed until a later date, likely a few weeks after release. I don't even expect to be leaving SLC for at least 2 weeks and as far as when my father is able to leave... we really don't know yet, it could be much longer than any of us would like to think about, especially when you consider the amounts of rehab he is looking at.
Everyone have a good time playing the second phase of beta, but MM2 will not be apart of that, look for us after release. We hope to have many of the planned participants and announced sponsors returning when we do.
I'll be doing my best to get to outstanding PMs but I have no real timeline, as I said I'm really busy atm. Both with my father and basically my having to take over his business while he's unable to do anything. As I get time , I'll likely be continuing to give updates about my status in a blog here on TL.
Tournament sponsors, should be hearing from me as soon as possible.
Thank you, Stew (Jake)
|

I hope your father is okay. Hopefully everything turns out all right, your father doesnt die and we can get this tournament up and going.
