nice to see u tried to fix the pretty weird mappool from ptsl1. tho the map Deconstructed is still a bit confusing with its 2 naturals for each player. and a lot of zergs are complaining about boneyard. well, i understand that u like to have ur "own" maps for this tournaments. but since the others are quite fine u should really reconsider these 2 imo. if u like big maps for this tourney how about tempest? didnt hear much rage about that one yet^^
anyway, hope to see a great tournament with lots of crazy games again
well, i have to correct myself. the main problem on tempest is that on close spawn a terran can kill the opponents natural gas with his own 'defensive' stationed tanks. thats a bit unfair myb, but u could imply cross spawn, so this problem would be solved. so all in all i think tempest cross spawn could be a way better alternative to boneyard. just a humble suggestion peace

As a Zerg player, I HATE boneyard!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would love to see tempest replace it, but wont cry TOO much either way ^_^

We tried to make it so it was most of the 2v2 ladder pool plus our two custom maps. Only the first map of each match will be fixed as we have changed it so the loser will pick the next map in the series.

We've actually added a new rule for this season where if both teams agree then players can switch races for a game. It has to be brought up before each game.

all in all skill level just now higher then last time, woo! very hard to predict the outcome. especially considering the werd tactics and sick games from the first season. cant wait to see wtf is goin to happen this time :D

We have teams competing from all over the globe and a majority of them are pro players who play full time. To try and line up everyone's schedule is a little bit difficult but we will try our best to accommodate teams as much as possible.

I've got a question regarding the process for inviting teams. Is it just based on how 'known' the players are? I only ask because some of those teams I have played multiple times on the ladder and never lost to them t.t

You have to really see it from our perspective, we're trying to push 2v2 into the mainstream and the best way to do that and increase viewership/interest is to involve some of the bigger name 1v1 players who are associated with pro teams. Just because they don't do as well on ladder doesn't mean they aren't contenders when it comes to the Invitational tournament. Few people gave Drewbie and CatZ any credit before season 1 and they ended up taking the tournament without losing a set and only dropping 2 games all tournament...

I don't disagree with how you are going about doing things, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing. Honestly if you just invited the top ranked 2v2 teams for Season 1 and didn't invite players who already have a decent/large fanbase then I am sure there would have been only a small fraction of the viewers, which hurts everyone interested in 2v2's. (Basically you guys are awesome)
One thing to think about for Season 3 though would be to maybe have two separate Open tournaments 1-2 weeks apart so that more people can compete. Something tells me if all the teams that signed up had actually shown up there would have been 3, Possibly even 4 different teams with invites to Season 2.

I'd have to agree with you, we were very disappointed with the turnout and will be looking to remedy that in the future. We really want to get as many high end teams into the tournament as we can but as just 2 guys putting this whole thing together, some things get delayed or fall through the cracks.

Hah, imagine how it is for me. We're still waiting on 100% confirmation for the last 4 but aren't getting the answers very quickly probably because of MLG this coming weekend. Again, as soon as I get a confirmation for a team, they go on the post. We also have teams on a wait list for invites so we always have that to fall back on
btw in terms of promotion for the event. have u guys considered asking HD for a shoutout/announcement for this tourney? i just know he likes to play 2v2 himself and hand a lot of fun casting the finals of ptsl1 on his yt stream. so if theres a well known dude u could ask for a little support its probably him. at least it wouldnt hurt to ask i guess

We'll since he's casting day 3 with Painuser we told him to feel free to plug us on his channel. Not sure if he has or not.
This is a great idea and initiative to host a dedicated 2v2 tournament. I've been enjoying 2v2s more and more through EGMC and I really look forward to watching this tournament. I sincerely hope that for any non winners-league-style format team-league 2v2 will be included. I would even risk to stream & commentate some 3v3 games even though I am aware that it could and in a clusterfuck ;P
EDIT: How the heck have I missed that:
Players’ team voice chat / player POV streamed alongside the casted live stream
The awesomeness of this event just increased tenfold for me
I've missed Season 1 and I must say I'm not the hugest 2v2 fan, but I think this could be fun. Nice that you include not only blizzard ladder maps but e.g. iccup maps too.

Awesome! Really underrated players on Reign and I'm sure they're hungry to prove themselves.
No offense to them but I don't think they will make it that far. As far as I know they haven't played much 2v2 together and in my opinion they are playing one of the hardest race compositions in this tournament. I am however, very interested in seeing what kinds of strategies they have come up with for beating the T/Z teams.
I doubt they have played much 2v2... but shit just got real
Really outstanding invite list so far. Can't wait for this.
This will be interesting, I know Ret has played a decent amount of 2v2 with megumi so should be fun to see him play with someone whos actually good at the game (No offense just being honest).
On September 01 2011 04:35 Dexington wrote: Are they a top ladder team or something?
They are consistently within the top 25 in the world and were ranked #2 when they contacted us. One of the players has had family issues which prevented them from competing in the open brackets and we had a team back out at the last minute and decided to give them a spot.
My top 3: 1.Team Wizards 2.The Assassins 3.Team Sup Sons
I feel like with the widened pool Catz and drewbie are going to have a tougher time than last tournament, wizard are a high rated wildcard and sup sons has select who has been beast mode lately as well as putting in dedicated practice towards the event and for EGMCS.

Well, last season the "dedicated" 2v2 teams were not that representative to be honest.

The tournament will be casted live (we plan on having a stream delay) and all games will be cast. Streaming starts at 3pm PST / 6pm EST and will go as fast as the games are completed.
I hate to have to be the bearer of bad news, but Drewbie, part of the reigning champion team 'The Assassins', will be unable to play due to lack of sleep and lack of computer over in Korea. CatZ has found a new teammate in FnaticRain and will be playing under the team name 'Last Second Alliance'

No offense to the others but I think there's only one team out of the Open bracket in this tournament that is top tier (I won't say who).
On another note, for all you redditors in this thread, come show the PTSL some support!
Rain/CatZ should be interesting, apparently Rain has never played 2v2 seriously including the EGMC before an hour ago so watching CatZ coach him was pretty cool.
I <3 all the cheese, it's really fun with pros. Also, on Teevox, I love the option on the arrow keys to listen to either team. Amazing idea, great integration!
Was looking forward to Catz and Drewbie's dream team, but It'll be interesting to see how Catz pairs with Rain. Still sad that the timing of Drewbie's trip to Korea temporarily breaks the defending champions.
I feel like Cruncher and Ryze are about to get hard-countered... Really badly...
I like the simplicity of switching audio, it's nice. I hope this tournament continues because the way this format is presented is really nice and with some improvements it could be super-duper sick.
Would've liked to see a transition into air from eP, GaB had nothing to counter and when a Zerg has the economy to remass Roaches with Infestor support leaving the Protoss to mass up Colossi, sticking with bio w/ Gateway units is just asking to die.

I don't think anyone has to worry about something like this being a repeat in future seasons. The admins/hosts for this tournament are very good at correcting any kind of issue's that come up in their tournaments.
While team newbcake was a waste of time, wtf is up with team wizard not finishing them off? I will be actively cheering against anyone who doesn't have enough balls to attack. Everyone knew it was a joke and they just spent 10 minutes up 100 supply waiting for an admin to call the game.
Before I sound like a jerk, though, I love 2v2 tourneys! Thanks for organizing this and making it happen.
Psy and Adebisi did a good job trying to keep things interesting while noobcakes were trying to troll your tournament. thanks for stepping in Admins and helping to move that along!

I think that they were just worried about possibly losing and they didnt want to take any chances..
Personally I would of just massed banelings and infestors but oh well.
I kind of understand the concern of the reddit post. Sure the game was ridiculous and boring and everything. And of course i understand there is a schedule and prolonging games is a pain in the ass, but i really think forcing them to go out of their base was a strange move.
I feel it was really the incompetence (or unwilligness whatever you want) of the Wizards to break a simple marine/viking only force, that was prolonging the game.
Any pro team would have run that over in a heartbeat.

Good execution on a good concept, as the seasons go on, I can really only see this getting better and better and better. 2v2 is a niche right now, and likely will continue to be, but as this tournament continues and more tournaments utilize 2v2, you'll see viewership increase and the games get more sick-awesome.

We will most likely be growing our tournament team for season 3, it has gotten to the point of being difficult to do everything with just 2 people like we are now so keep an eye open for a help wanted post in the future
Scorched Haven. Minigun couldn't get a 2nd base due to a 10pool by Wizards Zergplayer. Minigun didn't Wall-off his ramp and thus got far behind economywise. So Destiny fed him gas to go for 1base colossus. That of course made it impossible for himself to get Infestors. They held a first ling,roach,marine,marauder-push with 2 colossi, but then Wizards Terran pumped out Vikings and neither Minigun nor Destiny had they economy or the tech to build sufficent anti air, so they lost to the next push (same composition + around 10 vikings)
Boneyard. Minigun scouted an early agression build by Wizards and began to wall of the ramp. Destiny made a weird hatch-first, pool into roach build, leading to the point that Wizards had Marauders+Banelings+Speedlings at their ramp and they had about nothing to hold it. They desperately tried to get some units out, but Miniguns Gateways got unpowered and Destiny mismicored his lings into some banelings. Game was over.
Btw.: What happend in the lower bracket? Walkovers for SupSon and Bedflippers?
the amount of no shows is definately annoying. usually the 50 dollar one shows replays to avoid stream cheating. this one uses that voice chat thing to ensure no cheating. I like the teevox thing.
however, can we get players who care about 2v2? its clear that some of these guys do not care about this tournament and no show or do stupid things like dancing marines.
With that in mind you have to credit some of the pros that do care. ret/sheth. destiny minigun. their games have definately have sparked more intrigue.

It's still a very young league but I am sure the admins have already come up with plans to ensure next season has a lot more serious teams. Keep in mind a lot of the best players (Who will give us the best games) have never really played anything other than 1v1 before, so with that said sometimes you have to go out on a limb so you can get the big names (who will bring lots of viewers with them).
The more viewers they get the bigger the prize pool can be for future tournaments. The bigger the prize pools the better/more serious players you can attract. I mean, imagine if they got 50K+ viewers, we could possibly see names like Nestea or Boxer if the prize pool was high enough. One easy thing we can do to help out is to make sure we follow them on their twitch.tv stream as well as follow them on twitter (if you have one).
i hope next time i get invited because i don't understand how can you accept an invitation and then not show up for the tournament. Anyway i think 2v2 can be pretty entertaining but if there won't be team matches in bigger clan wars then the level of 2v2 will be not as high as it could be since most of the teams now are just good 1v1 connected players.

I'm pretty sure as the PTSL grows in viewers so will the demand for high level 2v2 play. This is something we could possibly see at MLG in a year or so.
I'm not positive but I think the most viewers at one time for season 1 was around 3k...so far we have touched on 10k and we aren't even in the finals yet.

Thedz actually made a custom map which had all the graphic effects added in game. He was nice enough to let us use his video for our intro

i hope PTSL takes the no shows very seriously for future seasons despite how "big" name they are. It must be annoying for players who are beaten by pro 1v1'rs to have those pros not show up

I really wish they'd put the actual player names in the overlay rather than the ingame names...also GuMiho just qualified for Code A so he's probably pretty happy going into this game :D
EDIT: Should've just kept Psy and Adebisi imo, such a big reshuffle on the final day is unnecessary.

I hope they manage to fix the sound problem. I like to switch between the casters and the players, but now the difference is such that unless I constantly change my own sound the sound will either be too loud or too low.

We're currently trying to fix the sound issues and the voicechat stream lag. Unfortunately each stream is from a completely different location so it is impossible to sync them up...

I understand. But I was criticizing the fact that they had no problem with calling it a forfeit when it looked like Gumiho was dropping. Compare this attitude to Gimix (the hero who gave white ra a fair match!). Its even worse because Sheth/Ret could actually win in a fair game, but they have no issue taking an undeserved win.
Well, they didn't take the free win. They were talking to each other about it (not incredibly seriously), and they didn't take it even when one of their opponents even flat out offered it after they were in the next game's lobby. I think us just being able to listen to their conversation with each other isn't something people are really used to.
its obvious lag affecting koreans more than ret in terms of micro, so ret needs to quiet down off his high horse imo. regardless its still annoying but what can you do ._.
1-1 right now. Wizard played that extremely weird. They chose to not box in Protoss when they had a chance and kill all his units. Backed up, gave up the Zerg expansions, didn't go for a push, backed up, let Protoss walk away freely, then proceed to get run over.

if they went after protoss they would have gotten stomped by FF's due to the chokes. they had the game won before but they decided not to 1 A and made a straight line for no reason :| though

There were 2 chokes leading to that base and FXO's Terran completely backed up. Both Wizards armies were far larger than FXO's Protoss. With good timing they could have gotten in before he FF'ed both chokes.
But whatever, Wizard won and I'm happy for them. Also no more laggy games.
ZZ doesnt seem viable, or maybe if they wouldve tried some all ins.. Just doesnt seem to be their style, too bad cuz i wouldve liked to see some banelingbusts with roaches from 3 or 4 base..
I hate how the commentators were saying the roaches that EG sent to 6oclock to take out the two expos was "a bad move" and kept saying things like "sure you took out two hatcheries, but you lost your army" etc etc. wtf that was pretty much THE decisive move that won them the game by abusing brood lord immobility... Sitting in the middle would have been a terrible idea. I guess it annoyed me because it should have been pointed out how awesome of it move it was instead of making it sound like some big blunder. Otherwise the commentators are doing great.
But yeah, I think that was the turning point of that game. Great game, but you could really tell Axlav was off racing lol.

Funny to hear Axslav say "Let's do a blue flame timing" when we can see Power's blue flame already on the way (Same in previous game with speed roaches)

It's the Terran in him talking =D
Zerg max out faster (especially on roaches) so it's advantageous to trade away those roaches for say, a base, so the army can replenish on infestors and Tier3. Terran maxes slowly and the army compounds on itself to become stronger the bigger it is, so it's usually always bad to throw away units as a Terran ^_^
Painuser just doesn't get that roaches are expendable when mass infestors are out on the field! It's not his fault he doesn't play Zerg
My biggest issue with the casters is they all seem to be 1v1 casters with very little experience in 2v2, hearing them constantly doubt or pick at every move ProTech and Power make even though they probably have 5x the experience of all the casters combined just make them look amateur.

Well to be fair, 2v2 is unexplored territory. It's hard to know what's going to go down when something like that happens and they immediately go for the counter attack.

Playing losers bracket finals now EG vs Team wizards, winners meet team protech or whatever.
Am I right in saying that Team Wizards and protech\powertech or whatever are the 2 teams with (by far?) most 2v2 experience\actually take 2v2 somewhat seriously? seems like most of the other teams are just strong 1v1 players teaming up.

You are correct. For whatever reason, season 1 was dominated by 1v1 players and this season has been all about the top level 2v2 teams

Terran is his permanent 2v2 race.
We saw him play Protoss in 2v2s quite recently (EGMCS comes to mind) but hopefully he is switching back to T permanently. He and StrifeCro seem to do a lot better with TZ.
I love how the third caster is sitting behind HD and PU looking like the unwanted kid rejected from the popular table. It's like NO you don't get the official looking headphones!

Meh, should have been the other way around in my opinion.
Noted for next time
I think psy and adebisi can handle the whole tournament. HD and painuser seems so disorganized. Lots of banging on the table, playing with water bottles, random sounds playing in the background.
Very interesting to see EG go down to Wizards. Really shows that extensive 2v2 knowledge can trump general SC2 skills. Not to say Wizards have bad mechanics, but they would probably lose to strife or axslav 1v1.
I am still obligated to cheer against wizards for their inability to finish off the joke team that was driving me crazy, but they seem very manner and really know their 2v2ing.

To be fair, Psy and Adebisi were not casting from the same room so they were using headset mics while HD/Painuser are using an open mic in the IGN studio...
I also love how we are seeing somewhat longer games in this tournament. I think BW 2v2 suffered a lot from not having dedicated 2v2 maps. Maps when you are separated from your partner always results in rushes. This line of thinking has transferred to most 2v2s that we see, but many of the lesser known teams in this tourny are showing that this isn't necessarily the case with the close spawn position maps.
On September 05 2011 13:46 eXist - Canuck wrote: watching these pro 2v2 teams in the finals is much more etertaining then watching pro 1v1 guys play 2v2.
If me and my 2v2 partner encounter PZ vs TZ, and we scout 10pool and/or gas-first for Terran, we just get up cannons and spines and turtle. Eventually a blinkstalker + roach composition can push out and re-establish map control. I don't see any alternative options when there's both split ramp AND such a long distance from friendly ramp to friendly ramp
That was a pretty great final game, despite short length
You snipe the tech lab: the terran has 1 barracks and 1 factory, only able to produce 150 minerals worth of units at a time. They snipe the tech lab: the terran is essentially on half-base production, so they keep streaming and just overwhelm because there's nothing that can be produced that can stop their waves.
It was a huuge blast watching PowerTech winning the games. =D These two are freaking hilarious and their game sense and cooperation was just top notch. gg PowerTech, you're amazing.
Congrats you two. Glad to see a true 2v2 team beat rather easily the pro 1v1 guys. People often doubt 2v2 player skills, hopefully this will give us all a boost.
As noted by a few others, a good job casting by the group overall. You could tell the lack of knowledge towards high level 2v2 played into effect with a few of the rushes/early play, but I'm sure by next season their knowledge should be higher.
2v2 completely different from 1v1 just because of unit dynamics and their resulting timings, 1v1'rs can transfer their mechanics but not their gamesense

Didnt expect to reach the finals after losing in the first round vs Ret/Shet (Like newbies xD) who are not even a 2v2 team.....but with effort and force we made it ^^.
Also i feel bad for my friend kAra and his ally Delphi, i really dont know how we won vs them with that huge difference, they are in a very good form...they deserved a top#3 at least imo... and sorry also for my friends GLRichy/NrTRuSh,i told them that we were to win and send him some "hi's mom" xD buuuut the luck was not with us in the final..specially in games #3 and #5 xD
Congratulations for ProteCh/Power,they did a very good tour and they deserve this win ! We will train hard to take the revenge in the next season .

i really loved the performance of iezal and executer for holding the european TZ pride up and for showing that european 2n2 teams can compete NA Teams for sure Also i liked to have teams in the grand finals wich are really into 2n2 and not just famous 1n1 names randomed to a team. At the end fair results just kara and delphi had kind of a bad run and could not show their full potential...
congratz to powertech for winning this and showing some amazing 2v2 skills! great tournament overall, hope to see more of adebisi+psy, enjoyed their cast very much. if at all possible, try to get cubert/aristeo next time,BIG NEED of a bo 7 between them and powertech

Lol, you ladder with one of the most talented GM protoss players on ladder, bubbles and can't even maintain an 80% win ratio with T/P on a ladder where the map pool is all shared base.
Power even played random in the tournament, which means no plan is devised until right when the game starts because him and protech don't know what hes going to random. (and he randomed zerg like 80% of the time and was still able to pull some things that would be considered impossible vs t/z off)
On the other hand, congrats to Power and Protech for showing the Europeans AND the Koreans which region is top at 2v2. =D NA UP!
