Well, I've never done this before. Apparently, ThisisGame interviewed Scarlett and posted a translated version of the interview on their website. There was no link to the original version so I thought I'd translate it back. If someone finds the original, I guess this can be closed.
Scarlett
We enjoyed your impressive performance. When did you start playing Starcraft 2?
I first began in April 2011.
Is this your first attendance at a major tournament?
I've played in online tournaments before but this is my first time at a major lan.
Asking around, you seem to be rank 8 in NA GM.
I don't know the exact ranking but I am top 10.
You managed to defeat STTerious (Bumbleebee) at your first major tournament. How do you feel?
This was my first attendance, and I wasn't too confident so winning made me happy. My opponent attempted a lot of attacks, defending those well led to my victory.
In round 3, you were in an advantageous position against FXOOz. What do you think was the reason for your defeat?
I had too few infestors and broodlords. I should have obtained my tech more quickly and prepared those units.
You voluntarily revealed that you are transgender. As a result, you are drawing attention to yourself outside of the game, does this not bother you?
A little, but it was all expected. This kind of reaction would've happened eventually once my situation became known so I didn't dwell on it.
If you are given the chance, are you willing to play in Korea?
Of course.
If you have a Korean progamer role model, who?
MarineKing
Then do you have a Korean Progamer you find attractive?
Yes. But I won't say who (chuckle). Let me keep it a secret.
You now have to play in the loser's round. Are you confident about advancing?
I am most confident against Terran and not so much against Zerg. Today, I haven't played against Terrans yet so if I meet Terrans on the way, I may make it.
Will you continue to attend tournaments?
Of course. I will keep improving my play and keep trying.
Took a series off of ddoro, terious, and demuslim and a game off of Oz. That's easily better than most NA pros. Scarlett next signed member of some notable team? Maybe Eclypsia...

Quantic Gaming @QuanticGaming Close Wow Scarlett is amazing! Can't wait to talk with her.
Hopefully she will attend the next MLG. Awesome to have more Canadian talent!
Seeing how she plays and how good she plays, with apparently not fulltime dedication, her talent could prepare for a pretty successful progamer career. I don't want to hype her too high, but I'll gladly follow her.
From her games vs. Oz, she seemed to have incredible mechanics, and just needed to work on her late-game timings a little (as she says in the interviews). If you didn't see the games, she basically just made too many roaches.
What did she mean when she said she's transgender? I know what transgender means (sort of) I just can't believe she meant what I think she meant? (she used to be a boy?)

She was born biologically male, or in some grey area that the doctors decided was closer to male, but she's female in terms of gender. We don't know (and don't really have any business knowing) whether she's undergone gender reassignment surgery, but she identifies as female.

And seeing as Scarlett has nothing wrong with her, they should love her.

There's actually a really famous transgender "female" celebrity in Korea. She is (or was) on billboards and magazine advertisements all over the place when I went 5 or 6 years ago.
Lol maybe not THAT accepted, given this paragraph.
Marriage Since her debut in 2001, Harisu has consistently expressed a desire to marry and have a family of her own.[1][7] In 2005, she began dating Micky Jung (real name Jung Yong-jin), a rapper whom she had met online.[39] Jung, who had been a member of dance group EQ during the 1990s, later joined Harisu's management company and worked on her fourth and fifth albums.[40] The couple briefly separated in 2006, but were reunited after Jung saw her dating another man on a TV show.[41] Rumours that the two were to marry began circulating in November 2006,[41] and a date for the wedding was announced in February, following meetings between their respective families.[40] Harisu and Jung starred in a reality television show on cable network Mnet showing their everday lives and preparations for their wedding, but the couple were subjected to harsh criticism from netizens.[42][43] On May 19, 2007, Harisu and Jung were married at Central City Millennium Hall in the Seocho-gu district of Seoul. The ceremony was presided over by KBS anchor Shin Young-il, and officiated by Kim Suk-kwon, a Dong-A University professor who had performed Harisu's sex change surgery in the 1990s. The couple honeymooned on the Thai island of Ko Samui, and began their married life at Harisu's family home in Nonhyun-dong, in the Gangnam-gu district of Seoul. The couple have said that they plan to adopt four children,[39] though the news prompted a mixed public reaction. A poll by Mnet found that 69% of 1,300 respondents were in favour of Harisu's decision to adopt, while in a similar poll by Daum, 58% of 8,094 respondents were against the idea.[42]

So apparently being a woman or transexual is a physical and mental disability now? Funny. From what I can see by her Starcraft II gameplay, she doesn't have any mental disability or physical disability. Of course I have yet to meet her in person and maybe there's a possibility that her non-starcraft capabilities would classify her as "disabled"

no but they might perceive it as being something of that nature, who cares what they think though

Pretty sure that is MKP.
quite a few koreans use the barcode
I wonder what koreans think about crossdressers then (in comparison to transgendered) o.o
(now that I think of it, it was at least a bit accepted cause in BW and all, but I feel those were more of joke ones)
oh well
@Scarlett stuff: I honestly.... for sc stuff I don't care ALL too much at how they look, I look at how they act and how good they are, so /shrug, good for her and best of luck oo /shrug.
holy shiet she put up some amazing results. this is not only good for the female gaming community, but also for the transgender community. curious to see what team will pick her up... especially since her stream is gonna post huge numbers now

She doesn't stream. She plays SC2 on a shitty laptop that puts out 20fps, apparently.

I know that feeling, when you have to play on all low settings, and when you have more than 50 zerlings you play in slow motion

That's not MKP. I mean it is but not only. There are a ton of koreans with such barcodes to keep their ID secret, some of them is MKP (he displayed it on stream so no secret here ) and some others are from other teams. There are lllllllllll of every race and different teams, I only know who the terrans one are though.
wait wtf. she beat muslim, took a game off oz, terious and ddoro? wtf......that is impressive. if this person has the skills, that is all that matters.

I think her laptop is like when Goku fought Tien Shinhan in the original Dragonball. Goku had worn weighted clothing up until that fight, and though he put up an impressive fight at first, he gained a remarkable amount of speed once he shed that weighted clothing.
Likewise, the shitty laptop (maybe a Mac) is Scarlett's weighted clothing. Once she sheds that for something better, greater things can happen. Come on Steelseries or Razer; sponsor this girl.
Great results, but tbh if Scarlett never came out about the transgender thing, WHO would really expose her or "make it known" as she presumes? Sure the Playhem/girl league administrator could spill the beans, but at a personal request I don't suspect that it would've blown up or something. Just a thought to toy around with.

I think no matter how hard she tried to hide it, it would've gotten out eventually. She also said that kind herself kinda. I think its good to get it out of the way so she doesn't have to worry about it later on in her career.

....people started guessing immediately after the interview hit youtube. she is smart to "get it over with" asap and move on. not sure why you think that, but there is nothing to toy around with. people were being jackasses from the start and she knew it would get worse. that is why they disabled the comments in the youtube section cuz it was getting disrespectful from the get go. and this was before most people found out about her being a transgender.

You did see who she beat right ? No matter the gender new blood with results like that would get known no matter what. This is her Breaktrought not because her transgender but because her play.
We have seen this tons before with MLG where new guys get impressive results in open brackets that's why you gotta love them, unknowns suprise and will possibly find a future as a pro gamer.

Being Transgender does not necessarily mean she has one or the other set of physical sexual traits. She may have gone through reassignment surgery, or may not. Whether or not she has one or the other doesn't matter. Mentally, she is female, and so she is. That's all that matters, and all that should matter.
I am blown away that she practices on a shitty 20 fps laptop if that is true and is this good. It will be definitely interesting to see how things pan out with teams and stuff in the near future.

Yeah, well, people were guessing in like... the first page of the interview thread, and already being quite rude about it. While people might not have known if she never confirmed it, perhaps she preferred that they did know for sure, when they were definitely going to speculate either way.
Oh well, congratulations to her for an impressive performance, regardless of anything else.

Could your post be anymore sexist? I'm sure she put it out there because she isn't scared to be who she is! Why go through people speculating and asking you all the time when you can just get it over with? Think about it! It makes a lot more sense to put it out there than to hide who you are.

Whether or not she has one or the other doesn't matter. Mentally, she is female, and so she is. That's all that matters, and all that should matter.

I don't necessarily agree with this, for you to say that she is what she believes she is in her mind is wrong imo, for example, if i believe i am a rooster, that would make me a crazy person because I obviously dont have a beak or feathers.
I'm not saying she's crazy because she obviously doesnt believe she is a different species, merely a different sex, but my point still stands in the fact that i believe u need to be BOTH physcially AND mentally a female to be a female
otherwise she is a transgender, to which she has admitted.

It's offensive, because she isn't a he, she is a she. It is as offensive as calling a she who has some strong male features a 'he'. Here is the rub: your gender is not your sex. Most of the time, gender and sex coincide, i.e. someone with the male sex has the male gender. However; there are people who have a certain sex (=biological features) but have a different gender (=how they psychologically 'are'). Seems to me like just a dumb statement and / or a bad joke...
And it's obvious that she puts it out there when people were already questioning gender when her interview first popped up. It's something the community hasen't dealt with alot yet, so OFCOURSE there is going to be some commotion.
That said, what is more impressive is her results. Even if the transgender thing wasent an issue for some people here, the results are still pretty amazing. (beating people who have been training on teams makes you wonder what they have been doing. Maybe they underestimated her, but we have yet to see the replays...)

Last post on the subject for some clarification purposes since Plexa has spoken.
Personally I don't think calling Scarlett a "he" is necessarily right either, which was why my post was more concerned with the negative (people who just can't bring themselves to sincerely address as "she") rather than people who positively want to address a mtf as he (which is admittedly, probably more rude).
Awesome interviews! I hope she gets picked up by a big team soon so they can start to foster this enormous potential. She's got a new fan in me.
Just as a side note (which is going to be longer than the main note...), it's interesting to see the bi-polar nature of the community. We burn down a member of our community for "racism", then de-rail every discussion about her results to her sexual orientation. You argue we want to appear as a legitimate scene for newcomers (WHAT IF A NEWCOMER SAW ORB SAYING THE N WORD OMG) but bring these crazy irrelevant details into an interview thread.
tl dr; Scarlett fighting! Leave irrelevant details out of it.
Impressive result from someone making their first real appearance. The foreign scene needs that kind of new blood if it wants to stay competive, so the best of luck to her in the future.

In any case, maybe that analogy made sense if there were separate male/female leagues in SC2 or something, or if males had any kind of advantage over females physically, which they don't in this space. The only reason we don't see any females owning it up in SC2 is that there aren't any playing as much, or as hard, or in houses, and all that jazz that makes a top progamer.
I can't see how that analogy would serve any purpose other than trying to upset people, seeming as it's completely unrelated.
Transgender, transsexual, male or female... why does it matter? There is no need to debate this in any way, let people be who they are and just leave it at that.
She did a very impressive run through this IPL4 and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

LoL! I dunno man.
What i really want to know is why does she put it out there. She must be craving the attention or something (as most women do). With that said it must be a woman!
But yeah her run is actually really damn impressive. I bet she will be on quantic by next week lol.
Maybe she had to say it loud since the TL interview thread and reddit were full with shitty comments about gender, and it was getting sad to read HELLA FAST. Now, no controversy, it's ok. It's better like that. Amazing performance at IPL for an unknown, too.
Well, she is most certainly putting up impressive results so far, seeing as she defeated a lot of decent players and took a game of Oz, why haven't i heard of her before?
i think its obvious that shes attracted to the boss toss, everyones seen him dance and girls love a guy who can dance. solved that mystery for you all.
I have to share this here as well because of how funny it is. The Koreans are calling Scarlett - Emma Watson. Of course I think Scarlett is way sexier thanks to her SC2 skills. Looking at the pics it is a close resemblance -

and if you really can't deal, gtfo. she deserves as much respect as anyone else at IPL for her performance yesterday and is going to be talked about a whole hell of a lot in the next few weeks. I for one am beyond excited for it.

Wow wtf, she was born male? Wouldnt have been able to tell, looks pretty female to me. Getting to the level where she can beat terious, demuslim, and take a game off oz, without even being in a team is INSANE. I wonder where she would be in a few months if she started practicing with one of the korean teams
Who gives a crap if shes a transgender bottom line is look what's she has achieved you go girl keep going ignore the haters i look forward to seeing more of her and hopefully getting to cast some her games.
What I got from this interview is that she has player starcraft for a year.... Wtf?
Now she can join Stephano and ret and their 3 hours practice schedule (or at least steph did last year) in the group of best performing foreigners, even though they have practiced a ton less than the protoss and terran players... Hmm.

Why hide the balance whine? Just state it outright.
Congrats to Scarlet for getting to the IPL and getting this far. It would be nice if she could get a bit of sponsoring and connections for practice partners while she's in Vegas.

I'm really glad more unknowns are coming out of the grandmaster woodwork and showing up to stomp on some of the better-known players. They deserve some limelight if they're willing to make the time and energy commitments.
I hope Scarlett goes far; as it is, she'll be picked up by a team (if she wants) for sure!

If strictly talking about SC2, then yes Aphrodite. Otherwise, how would Tossgirl rank up to her and Scarlett?
I hope Scarlett continues to impress in the loser's round (assuming she's still in it) and not briefly show up then disappear. She could be a pro in the making! And she's Canadian!

#1 american is really a toss up. I'd say KawaiiRice at the moment, but Sheth, Idra, and many others certainly make a case. In about 6 months, it will be qxc with no question.

My question is, should we regard to her as a "Female Gamer". I don't know the technicalities but is she legally a female? While she wants to be called "she", that's fine with me but I don't think it's right to label her as a female gamer.

Labels are imperfect. She says she's a girl, so either accept it or don't.

That wasn't my point. The point is that there is no "legality" issue. All of the drama is in the community's collective head. Gender is something that is largely socially-constructed, so if you want to be respectful then you should accept Scarlett as a female.

So impressed by those results and by her play vs OZ, I have no idea what transgender means atm but I don't care a bit, let people be what they want to be no matter what! I used to be a narrow-minded idiot during my teen years (long time ago!), something that I regret big-time these days.
Believe it or not, I had a humanities class about gender. Kate Bourstein wrote a lot about this subject and according to her, gender is a category assigned to you by society. Our vision of both Male and Female are superfluous because they do not exist by themselves in nature.
For instance, if you see a dog bark, you would see this bark as "dog-ness" but there is nothing in nature that makes a man a man and a woman a woman. You may argue that a man must be strong and a woman must be thin and seductive but remember that these are features valued by your society. There are in fact other societies that value a bigger women or female dominance.
For this reason, Bourstein argues that it is "sex" that characterises truly a person. Human beings in their purest form have either a penis or a vagina and to describe oneself as male, female and/or transgender is simply branding oneself with useless labels.
For Scarlett and many people who are perhaps born with an extra chromosome or feel they are of another "gender", they have every right to undergo surgery and live their life to the fullest. A funny thing to note is that Bourstein claims that she has no gender. According to her, she is neither male or female.

I'm just curious since I've never read her work, what does Bourstein think about societies outside of those governed by humans? There are surely delineations between different genders in the animal kingdom, such as in bee colonies, and even outside of that. Does she even address this?
Also, do you know what being born with "an extra chromosome" means? It doesn't have anything to do with gender identity.

Sounds the like ideas of a radical feminist. We've labeled everything else in existence, why wouldn't we label ourselves and distinguish our differences that way? But I guess she probably doesn't acknowledge there are differences, history surely turned out the way it did coincidentally.

Methinks you have not fully considered the implications of gender as a purely chromosomal distinction.
I don't know anything about her... was she born a man? Or the other way around? Anyway, if she was born a man...
Say she would be a swimmer or a trackrunner or whatever in the Olympics - would she be allowed to participate in women's championships? Something tells me that if this was possible - alot of women speed records would have been broken.
If yes: then she's a female gamer If no: then she's a male gamer.
Please note that I respect everyone equally and I have nothing against anyone. I do find this discussion quite interesting though,
