After watching the MLG Winter Championship, we noticed that Life was able to beat Flash a little too easily in the finals. Had Flash been able to build Warhounds, our favorite race (Terran) may have won the tournament. As usual, we made a spur-of-the-moment decision based on this match and immediately set about rebalancing the game.

Neat that someone on Blizzard (maybe they had it set on a timer?) released a news update this late at night (10:00 PM their time... totally late all right).

So in the StarCraft II news page (before you actually launch the game, the window that shows up when you click on SC2), it shows "Warhound is back!". That's really great.
In battle.net (in SC2), the first two new pages are about the Warhound.
Great stuff.
Someone see if anyone streaming gets caught off by it (Artosis streams, sees "Warhound is back" on battle.net 2.0, gets all surprised?).
You would think but... They actually replaced all workers with Warhounds in game (if you don't want to ladder to check it out, just play a custom game on daybreak LE or something).
I thought people were joking at first but Blizzard actually did this.
Really good joke. I'd like to see <insert famous player here>'s reaction on stream!
This is a terrible joke, Really distracting having them as workers. Not sure what they were thinking. What happened to just a funny video on their website or starcraft 2 typing or then Pandaren race. They were humorous not distracting.

Situation Report -- April 1, 2013 by David Kim, Warhound Balance Designer Mar 31, 2013 10:00 PM PDT 55
As you may know, the Warhound was removed very early in the Heart of the Swarm public beta test because we felt that its role overlapped with the Marauder a bit too much. Mechanically, these two units were virtually identical, but were produced from two different buildings. It’s never an easy decision to remove a unit, but this decision was particularly tough because we absolutely loved the Warhound’s art.
Accordingly, we reintroduced the Warhound into our internal builds for testing purposes. It felt great to have the Warhound back when we played as Terran, but when we played against them using our favorite race (Zerg), it somehow felt very wrong. Obviously, we couldn’t have that, so we decided that we must also give the Warhound to Zerg.
After putting some more thought into it, we realized that our favorite race (Protoss) was getting the short end of the stick because it was the only race without the Warhound. That’s when it came to us: Protoss should have it as well, since one of our main goals in StarCraft II was to create as much symmetry as possible amongst all three races.
So after considering every angle, here’s what’s changing:
The Warhound has been added for Terran because robots are cool and the art is amazing The Warhound has been added for Zerg to remain competitive with Terran. The Warhound has been added for Protoss to keep Protoss players from whining about them on the forums. While we know these changes are drastic, we encourage everyone to log in and spend some time playing before rushing to judgment. We welcome you to share your thoughts, but this time around we’re not going to be listening to feedback.
For more information on the story behind the Warhound please check out the Warhound Q&A and the latest entry in our StarCraft short story series “Command Performance”.
So i really feel like this is annoying as fuck, and i dont want to play with it on. refreshing this page until someone or i figure out a way to toggle it off. this is making me not want to play the game, i hated how warhounds looked that bad

The warhound probe doesnt even look or feel like a probe and i dont even recognize it as one of my units.... sitting there focusing them down because i forgot mid game thinking it was a widow mine in the middle of that map is the stupidest thing ever...
Bwahahaha, I played a game VS a Zerg before I read this, he figured out it was an April's Fool joke before I did. It was pretty hilarious baving a Zerg Warhound vs Terran Warhound battle.

Just got DT rushed and it's actually way harder to keep scvs and marines and things organized when the unit structure and wireframe changes, it's super disorienting. I wish you could turn this off.

here is a thread i posted about it, as you can see, it looks like because i dont want to look at warhounds on my one day off in this week where i can actually play, i'm a jackass and a sore sport
doubt that blizzard employees gave enough fucks to even think about adding a toggle option
pretty ridiculous that as a customer i'm being pranked by the developers with ingame content with no option to turn it off

what buzz kill? Gameplay affecting things shouldnt be scewed with in an esports title... See a random players worker? guess what its a warhound -.- they changed the wireframe and everything for workers, priority is screwed up, have trouble deselecting workers from control groups. Confusing my workers for terran units. and the list of issues goes on... There really isnt any buzz kill here... Im training for a tournament thats coming up soon and this is one of my few days left, and i have to deal with this crap.

I really am just upset that this change was made on this day that is so inconvenient for both my schedule. I make you sick for disliking being pranked by a company after i bought their product? Hit a nerve or something? It doesn't take a psychiatrist to see that you clearly have anger issues. Or do you think it's normal to blow a simple comment out of proportion?

Obviously I've been drinking way to much tonight. I'm arguing with an anime fan on the internet. I never thought I'd see the day...
TeamLiquid Forums - "We swear we're better than Reddit" since 2011.
But no, seriously, who didn't see this coming? Blizzard comes out with a funny joke, and some people don't find it funny. Instead of saying "Not funny," it's "OMG. PRANKED. I PAID $40!"
Talk about self-entitled rage. Holy shit. It's a joke. Would you get pissed if McDonalds changed Ronald McDonald's hair color because "I PAID FOR A BIG MAC ONCE." Or, if they put said Purple haired Ronald McDonald as a toy in a happy meal, I bet your response would be "I PAID $5 FOR A RED HEAD CLOWN. RAGE."
The way people sound, Blizzard just made a permanent change and made Warhounds flying lag hacks.
I thought that this was a bug and spent the last 30 minutes trying to resolve it
It's bad enough that I cannot disable my enemies skins (zerglings etc), but this is just beyong stupid. The article was funny but the implementation is too annoying.

I'm sorry, are you a therapist? don't tell me about myself.. do you think your car dealership is going to run out tonight and paint everyone's cars pink so they wake up and are fool'd? no, that's just as ridiculous as this mandatory prank is
It's kinda true though, i laughed at first and posted links of pics to several people but i dont actually want to log on today and play 20 games like this.
I really enjoyed it. Didn't read the announcement, got into game (Zerg) and had a small WTF? moment with the warhounds. Proceeded to warhound rush my opponent with proper lines on chat, because you don't get warhounds that often as Zerg.

I have a solution to all of you annoyed by the warhounds: go play Bx monobattles all day long. There aren't quite enough players on a regular day, but this could be push that gets these games on the Most Played list. I'm sure you wouldn't mind playing something silly for one day, especially the day of the year dedicated to joking around, and you'd help get a well polished custom game off the ground.

Don't be 'That guy'
Too bad it's not just "that guy" and its actually a lot of people. Also, 'that guy' is a paying customer, and if he doesn't want to look at warhounds he shouldn't have to.
Being a paying customer doesn't make you so entitled. If someone doesn't like any other skin in the game, that doesn't allow them to do something like say replace the ok looking viking with a cool looking wraith texture instead, saying that if "a paying customer ... doesn't want to look at warhounds he shouldn't have to" is silly. The car dealership painting everyone's car pink analogy is even worse, it's more like your neighbor painted his car pink for a day and you are bitching about having to look at it (sc2 art is not like your car, you do not own the art assets). That your one day off a week falls on april fools is your own personal scheduling problem and has nothing to do with blizzard.
There's plenty of inconsequential annoying things to dislike in this world, people have to just get over it and deal with it because it is impossible to please everyone in the first place. The inanity of such a vapid subjective argument like 'I don't like it, the skin/art annoys me' is easily countered with a simple 'so what?'
I personally have always despised the warhound's art, and yet, it doesn't stop me from playing or hinder me in game at all (aside from repeatedly clicking them to hear what they say again of course).
I would have loved to see Blizzard implement starcraft pro quotes into the units.
So when you sent a drone do attack a unit you could hear something like "this is fucking ridiculous" from Idra, or "I kill you" from MC whenever you select a DT. Or Dragon saying "I not gay" whenever you send an SCV to repair another unit.
Probably better ones to use, but I would love to see that happen one day

the only problem with that is i think they have to patch that in since it's in mpq files. (i think)
this way they can just patch the warhound model into the map
LOL good joke. I logged in and was wondering why my SCVs were warhounds. Ironically, they were fine one game then went warhound in the next so I thought maybe I unlocked some skin and need to disable it then I found this thread lol and ya, it's not as bad anymore XD

Really hilarious april's fool by Blizzard, I'll have to admit. It does get confusing when I pulled probes to defend against a Terran's scv all in. Started to lose track of whos winning mid fight with the clusterf of mini warhounds
its a funny joke but should be an option, really annoying to try to stack warhounds and yeah workers look way stronger in fight then they actually are kinda like the humungous raptor lings. Hopefully blizzard makes skins an option soon
I appreciate the effort and it is funny, but if Blizzard was really able to joke on their own account they would make winfestor workers..After all they actually had a huge impact on actual game, most of WoL to be exact, while warhounds were never actually part of a game...

Why would anyone lose a ranked match because of a skin?
I could consider this scenario.
Random vs Player A,
random gets zerg and 'drone' scouts player A. Player A assumes terran, and chooses wrong build?
No biggie imo lol
If it has 45 health it is an scv, if it has 40 health it is a drone. I don't see how someone could lose because of this lol.
You can also click on them and see what upgrades they have
Can't you just click on them and see 'Probe' 'SCV' 'Drone' anyway.. and if you're scouting, well if they're zerg you're gonna see creep to start followed by a bloody hatch, alternatively nexus/cc.
Since it is just for this day, I'm all in - great job Blizzard People just have to realize that there are and ther WILL be april fools no matter what your schedule or ladder plans are. Just deal with it for goodness sake.

Well, thats the thing though. They never really took the time to try to balance it out. To try to make it work. I think they did like one thing to the warhound and then removed it because the backlash was huge.

I'm a paying customer and I want, no, I demand that the warhound skin is set to be permanent. why should the worker skin be different between races when they do the same tasks? No reason whatsoever, just gives huge imbalance when the SCV is bigger than probe, makes them look scarier.
I really hope that Terran may keep the skin as an option. I wouldnt mind that the other races keep them as well, but I can imagine that some people find this hurting the astetics of the game.

I havent even played the game yet I just saw it on a stream. Its not so much about me but about people that play starcraft as a profession. I really don't see how this can possibly affect the progamers tbh. Do you really think one of them will max out on workers and attack the other's base and he gg's before even fighting? Oh and your comparison is off as well, since its just 1 unit it would be more equal to changing your start button and only your start button to korean at work. Will it look silly? yes. Will it bother you in any way? no.

If it was gras-green that be but similar to the workers looking like minerals or the color of the map which they aren't . They are still very easy to see , hell even easier because they're slightly bigger. The unit is not even in the game FFS . If it was a unit that already is in thats one thing. If you can't treat the warhounds as workers for one day there's something wrong with you . This should never be a reason to go apeshit and lose games . If it is then there's an issue with you not the game.
I can understand the complaints. It is a bit annoying at first (I imagine much more so for zerg players), but you get used to it after a while. Once you enter the "Flow" of the game, they don't make any impact, at least not for me. Anyways, great joke by blizzard, though I wish I could use a real warhound for once .

No!!! My new plan is to blame ALL my losses on the warhound-workers. Today, because they are there. Tomorrow, because Blizzard took them away just when I adapted. Then I will post a long blog about how SC2 is going to die because Blizzard won't let us use the warhound as workers and does not encourage creative play. I am deadly serious about my SC2.

Part of beeing a Pro in whatever is dealing with adversity. If your opponent deals better with it he's just better at his job and you have no reason to complain about anything but yourself.

Yeah, so the people switch the map and forgot to check that it wasn't WOL? That sounds like their problem for not doing their due diligence. Also, how much do you really think that affected their game when they realised they couldn't build reapers? Drama over a non-issue.

The model does not bother me so much, the different (much smaller) selection area and slightly different behavior does, though.. it's impossible to worker stack with them after being used to probes, so all of my timings are thrown off by like 3-15 seconds

They can change the unit skins at any time they so choose. Permanently, even, if they decide they like a new skin better than the current one. You still would have no rational grounds with which to be this upset.

Are you serious? Like, you're making a legitimate point right now?
You're playing a Blizzard product, it's not like Blizzard works for you because you dropped 40$ on a video game.
And yes, all we're dealing here with is a simple skin change. We've all played tons of games. We all know what our workers look like. You're not a special case. If you really desire to play games and you CAN'T because of a simple skin change then you either have attention deficit, DID, or you're just super anal retentive. Hence the myriad of butthurt comments.
Hell maybe you can e-mail Blizzard and get a refund on HOTS. I'm sure the community would be devastated to see you go.
EDIT: I don't know why Blizzard having your credit card info is relevant, but I feel the need to point out that that was your decision. I like to buy all my games at a store for this very reason.

How did the warhounds cause rematch?
French caster said : The map was hosted on a different version of the one initially planned because the players (or the admins?) didn't want a map with the warhound skins. The map that was chosen was a WoL version and caused the rematch.

Serious players care about SC2. Playing it is like art and Blizzard is taking away their right for artful play. They want to become as beautiful as Flash and play on his level of artful beauty. Blizzard has taken away that right as player and they are justified in their rage, since it is for the amusement of "common people" who don't seek to obtain artistic play.
If you were a serious player, you would understand what is being lost by the Blizzard changing the model. The damage is deep than we will ever know.

Are you serious?
Clearly I am 100% serious. I mean look at my previous posts in the thread and you can tell I mean what I say.
Here is what I managed to find out about the new Warhound so far. In Game Model
It's going to be a scout/reconnaissance light unit with fast movement speed. Warhound under trees can only be detected when a unit is within a range of 3, the Warhound's own range is not effected.
List of confirmed abilities: Seasoned Hunter. Cost 50 Energy Effect: Reveals footprints left by the opponent's army within that last 7 second, footprints will be reanimated so a player can see the direction of travel. Players will be able to identify army composition from the different footprints if they zoom in to analyse.
Squirrel! Effect: Increase Warhound movement speed by 30% for 2.4 secounds. Cost 40 energy.
Ouch Charlie!New upgrade from factory. Effect: An attack that cause the WarHoung to bite a unit's toe, Warhound will not let go of the enemy unit until the end of the spell. Affected unit with injured toes will have their movement speed reduced for 2 seconds. A 20 seconds trail of blood is left by the effected unit for the purpose of humiliation and other creative ideas.
Foul Play: New upgrade from Refinery Effect: Allows the Warhound to leave behind a disgusting substance on the ground. Does 20 damage over 2 seconds to all unit(except workers) within range, 6 seconds duration. Substance can be remove by workers.
Woof!. Upgrade from Supply Depots. Cost 5 energy per sec. Effect: Allow the Warhound to bark continuously. Each Warhound using bark will cause a continues blink on the minimap for the duration of the spell, the blink effect on the mnimap is the same as the "under attack" blink. The sound effect of bark will be audible by all players regardless of their view. The bark ability works best in large groups, given enough numbers, you can literally block the opponent(and yourself) from hearing any other sounds.

It's hard to tell the difference between them and zealots (especially with the dark skin)
It's harder to tell how many there are per mineral patch which makes mineral stacking a lot more inconvenient.
Their movement animation is different enough from probes so that seeing them in peripheral vision makes it hard to tell if there are actually enemy units in the mineral line or not
Anyone saying they are no big deal probably does not play the game enough to really care about those things, but they are significant and this is definitely an annoying change.

Sure, right, you also didn't mention the voice-over change (for recognizing worker completion, etc.). But it certainly doesn't make the game unplayable and is only for one day. Maybe there is a 1% chance you'll lose a game because of these detriments but really, is it going to affect your play in any meaningful manner?
EDIT: Not to mention all players have the same negative effects.
I don't know why people are whining, I play a lot better with the new warhounds, I just went from Gold to Grandmasters and my APM shot up to 350, I used to be a humble 145.

The serious players understand that Blizzard is standing in the way the beauty you are trying to achieve. This is disgusting that they would trying to impede your noble quest for the perfect game of SC2, with perfect mineral saturation. The “commons”(people who don’t understand artful play) are amusing by the robots mining, but the true artist are just saddened. I am leaving work early to check on one my friends trying to get to GM on the Korean ladder. He sent me a very dark text and I am concerned for his safety and well being. The emotional damage done will never be undone, but hopefully no lives will be lost.
Using my legal expertise, I am putting together a class action law suite against Blizzard for the emotion damage caused by the change. The amount of time and effort you have lost is not worthless and you shouldn’t be made to feel that way by Blizzard and their overlord Activision. Their attempt to please and entertain the “commons” has done serious damage to your quest for artful play and you have a right to stand up for yourself. You are entitled to be made whole from the damage they have caused. You don’t need to live in fear any more.

Perhaps blizzard should hire you for next year's april 1st, you could probably come up with something decently clever and witty.
Considering I filled a friend’s closet, all his cloths included, with packing peanuts from floor to ceiling and walled it off with cellophane, you don’t want me involved. There is no way I would pick anything less annoying that swapping out a model for tiny robots.
P.S. That is a pretty tame prank too. Anything involving a gorilla suit is way better.

Really? There's a gazillion april fools jokes today that just people telling a lie about something terrible happening. This at least was semi entertaining without being about making people feel horrible. Unless you got scared for life by the warhounds in the beta of course.

lol and you know this how?
Serious players care about SC2. Playing it is like art and Blizzard is taking away their right for artful play. They want to become as beautiful as Flash and play on his level of artful beauty. Blizzard has taken away that right as player and they are justified in their rage, since it is for the amusement of "common people" who don't seek to obtain artistic play.
If you were a serious player, you would understand what is being lost by the Blizzard changing the model. The damage is deep than we will ever know.
Have never read a more delusional post than this lol.
Seriously would mean something if you were ANYbody in SC2... but the fact that you were serious when you wrote this makes it one of my favorite posts ever.
Dem Ladder points ARE SERIOUS GUYS!!!!!!! You are stripping away my practise time.... how will I ever get into Gold If i am forced to play with these silly warhounds and surrounded by all of these people who play this game for fun. I NEED PRACTISE!
I hate this holiday, but only because everyone can write stupid shit followed by "april fools" for like 48 hours -.-

My confusion when a warhound turned into a spire was just way too high. Also I would definitely love if this were an unlockable skin sometime in the future.

Why not? Peanuts or a Gorilla would have been more entertaining ... stuff like the Tauren Marine or the Terratron were cool, but after they had "the real game" they didnt have the time to "make an effort" anymore and just did a reskin.

Most of companies do on April Fool cannot be seen as a prank, but just a flat out flake press release which is mildly amusing. There is a great economy to the Hound-worker prank that which I appreciate. No patch or anything to notice that something is amiss and then, BANG, mini-robots melee attacking your minerals for glory. Its like a real prank, as opposed to the other stuff which is just a fake press release.
When I saw the announcement about the Warhound being back I didn't think it was too funny, and too obvious. But when I saw them ingame ... hilarious! And so cute. GJ Blizzard! I miss them Warhound workers already.
It is a little bit distracting. But I can't imagine how you could lose games because of it. And since it's only for one day.... jesus! But I didn't find it funny either.

I was playing unranked late last night (or early this morning, depending on how you look at it) as a Zerg. And my first game was against a Protoss. When the game started, I saw my "workers", laughed (cackled, really), and "droned" heavily. Then I pulled my warhounds, rushed the Protoss base, and he said "IMBA IMBA IMBA" and left the game immediately.

The next protoss I ran into, however, crushed me.
You're joking right? Surely he noticed his workers looked the same? O_O

April Fool's!
What is this April Fool's day? I did not learn of it from my Romanian parents.
I am so happy workers got switched back. My buddy and I were getting confused about which workers where whose when we double 12 drone rushed. They were a little annoying, but I applaud Blizzard for the effort to put the warhound in, if only for a little while.
On April 02 2013 11:43 Black Gun wrote: they got me with the line "the warhound's amazing artwork".
nice april fools joke, i liked it.
Well, the portrait is actually really good for the warhound. He looks like he should be piloting a battlecruiser or something though TBH.
I wouldn't mind if they released the actual Warhound portrait (the ones you get from playing the beta isn't full screen and has the flair on top of it which makes the portrait hard to see). I mean, they released every single unit portrait (including the Diamondback and the Predator) in WoL.
Maybe... maybe we'll see the Warhound again. Someday. In a few years, when Legacy of the Void comes, perhaps it will have a balanced, well thought out role and we can get our sweet prince back.

Looked cool , but I didn't need my drones to be WarHounds for more than one match , confused the fk outta me , I kept Having low saturation (I know I should just look at the number in hatch's now but meh)
Repeating the same joke , fk that , it's gone now right ?
It was great, I don't really get the annoyance of it all. Like, player were having trouble understanding it was a scv ? What was the problem while laddering ?
I played all day yesterday, having my drones switched didn't troubled me once I acknowledged it was just a new skin for it.

well, they animate mining 3 times instead of 2. so i lost every single fucking game due to raging at fucking up every single mineral stack attempt i made (muscle memory). also i felt like their selection was laggy as fuck and twice i couldn't select a certain scv to put in gas and put in a double staccked on close mins one twice...pissed me off more
one i put 5 in cc which hasn't happened since fuckign WoL beta. and a few times i accidentally selected all adn stopped which hardly ever happens.
