So basically the same thing as last year?
I was hoping for a format that is better at giving exposure to the players. That's one thing that was really lacking last year--making Challenger feel a bit like a real event rather than just one more set of qualifiers.
|
They added a group stage and only 4 players qualify through the ladder instead of 8 compared to last year, right?
Btw information is already plural, informations does not exist. Classic mistake for us euros .
|
The difference is only 4 through GM instead of 8. ( because of WCS Ro4, half GSL)

No , loser bracket only, thanks for pointing this

I can congratulate the person responsible for scheduling. It will be amazing to see how players participating in Nationwars finals on April 21 will be able to play both challenger and the said finals and what a treat for viewers as well, we will have to watch on 2 monitors :-)

lmfao what a waste of resources and time. Nobody watches these challenger brackets and they get no exposure whatsoever

don't derail threads with moderation complaints or bans/warns will follow

More group stages is always nicer than se or de brackets, but this does mean top 4 of the respective region right?

While ive learned to like this format, i still miss WCS EU/NA with the live crowd and all player present.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the qualifiers could attract a large crowd too, not just the basement in Cologne(?) with room for 13 people...
I might be stupid, but I don't quite get what is meant with this:
4 players will qualify from their final placement at the WCS Leipzig Pre-season

Ok thanks! With only 4 WCS tourneys I'm not sure I agree with such freebies, but ok.

I'm deeply facinated by the though process that made you arrive at the conclusion that posting a zoom in screenshot of a bracket was the best way of telling us the top 4 players.

So if I get this right, those that won the qualifier for WCS Leipzig for Europe and North America get a seed to the qualifier, not those that actually did well in Leipzig, like Showtime who reached the final or Special, who reached the semi. Sounds a bit weird to me to be honest. I think it would have been better to skip this and let everyone qualify. That would mean more action for us viewers, and we could do with that.

Ah, my bad. I thought Mexico belonged to North America geographically speaking.

I like the changes on the format, is a balanced point between old (2014/2015) WCS format and the last iteration of the Challenger. Looking forward to see how it goes.

Mexico does belong to NA geographically speaking, (as do some other countries which are not the USA or Canada) but their WCS region is Latin America

I'm going to be a Community Caster for these qualifiers and who knows what else, hopefully i can bring some more eyes to this and to players playing in it.
There obv will be other Community Casters as well for it, if a player in the brackets is about to start a game and wants their game casted and i'm not already in a game casting...let me know and i'll cover it. I want to cast as many games as possible and give coverage to as many players and as much of the bracket as possible

Tuned in briefly, and avilo is a surprisingly good caster. He was doing some decent analysis in a crazy printf game, talking about walling off and mindgames and potential counters and so forth, and pretty enthusiastic.
Also not raving about maphacking or imbalance or anything like that, talking about "900 IQ plays from Protoss"

What a crazy game from printf and Ukko. With slightly better decision making printf could have won that quite easily I think. And Ukko could of course have avoided all this entirely, by Nydusing or proxy hatching which should beat what printf does almost every time.

It's worth a try, but I rather think you still lose since zerg can easily expand (and also protecting the nexus is non trivial since you have to put the initial cannons and shield batteries in a corner somewhere).

If you're proxying near the natural, then you can easily rotate your forces between applying pressure on the natural and also defending the natural. printf's main problem is that he can't move as easily between protecting his base and applying pressure on the natural, whereas with a nydus, Zerg can alternate between the bases easily. Plus, the Protoss can just recall the probes to the other nexus.

He's just a fake until he defeats avilo. And raven vs raven is truly the pinnacle of Starcraft. It's admirable that fake avilo is somehow able to bank 4k gas and no minerals despite their compositions.

I hope they didn't veto Eastwatch. Because the one problem with Backwater is that it only has 14 bases.

They should've let nature take its course. Starcraft games auto-draw after 32768 (in-game) seconds anyways.

Fantastic. They're doing exactly the same things as last game.

I mean this time there's a 10k gas differential. You wouldn't call a draw, you DQ THERIDDLER for not making a good faith attempt to win the game.

GG.
Next maps are Blackpink and Acid Plant, and not Eastwatch and Neon Violet unfortunately.

APPARENTLY MATCHES ARE GOING TO BE POSTPONED UNTIL TOMORROW.
If the reason is player/caster/admin fatigue, I am not sure this is the right decision... the cutoff point seems almost arbitrary. so at 3:30 am matches must be halted but the ones at 2:30 or 3:00 aren't? Before anyone says no other matches were being played, yes, there were. Antis played against Ukko and Antis played against Puck after that. How is this fair to them? Perhaps their matches were also effected by fatigue... What about the matches before them... idk kev...

My body is ready.
Blackpink should be harder to split than Backwater, but after seeing Clem and Guru split Abiogenesis, anything is possible.
Having seen the games I don't blame Blizzard. THERIDDLER could easily have finished the second game way sooner, and was definitely trolling.

Riddler using skins could force a rematch if he wins, right?

But in Raven vs Raven games it's really really hard to finish off the game

Yup. Though since avilo has absolutely no deniability about "only noticing the skins at the last minute" hopefully we don't get another Scarlett scenario.

Yeah, but the reason why Scarlett swindled her way into a re-game was partially because according to her she only noticed the roach skin when they burrowed at the end. Whereas here hopefully the admins will be very unsympathetic to avilo only complaining about the skins when he's about to lose.

Completely disagree. Asking for a rematch as soon as you notice is from a certain standpoint fair, whereas waiting until you get into a losing position is unsportsmanlike and warrants a disqualification.
edit: Also avilo could get DQed for chatting after being warned.

The opponent didn't build many of them iirc, and it's only when they burrowed that Scarlett called it (since I think they look more different then). So at least Scarlett had plausible deniability, whereas THERIDDLER's entire army is skinned.

The rules say:
Players must pause the game and notify an administrator within 3 minutes of a nondefault unit skin first visibly appearing in-game in order to request a re-game. Tournament admins will use their discretion to determine whether a player had a reasonable window to notice and report a disallowed skin.
So this particular abuse is covered.
Though in truth avilo could just have reported it as soon as the game started and gotten THERIDDLER a game loss.

Then the admins could just DQ avilo for failing to report every single previous instance of the skins, and he can fun trying to convince the admins that he only noticed the BC skin and not every single other skin. And that's if you go with the dubious reading of the rules that each non-standard skin is a new instance of the three minute timer.

Rules still obligate you to report them--and you can hardly claim to have only noticed that one skin when their entire army is skinned.

Clem's playing ghost/lib rather than ghost/raven against Stephano. Is this a one-off, or did he also play ghost/lib in the earlier series (as a result of PTSD due to his series against Guru)?

Also, seeing all these French players qualify, and Stephano's strong form both today and yesterday really adds to the narrative of just what a breakout Reynor had in Nation Wars. France has some great players.

Yeah, he'll be able to play in Valencia and Montreal.

Nice!
Also, looking at the seed distribution for WCS as a whole, while I really can't fault them population wise, and even skill-wise until recently, I'd say next year they should re-think the 4 seeds from NA, and only 2 from Latin America. Slowly but surely Latin America is catching up and even surpassing the NA scene. Special, Kelazur, and Cham vs Neeb, Scarlett, and NoRegret would be pretty close. Then again, it's also really cool that Copa America is connected to WCS, that's pretty legit.

He'll be 16. Yeah, he'll be able to play in Valencia and Montreal. And looks like fourth time's the charm for DnS. Really? I feel like Europe gets completely shafted. Skill-wise NA doesn't deserve as many seeds as EU, and SEA and Taiwan certainly don't deserve two seeds a piece.
edit Oh and unsurprisingly avilo got a match loss for ignoring his warning about chatting.

NA has probably won a near equivalent or potentially even greater number of WCS events than EU. The EU has a greater overall skill level, but the NA has equivalent top skill level.

What's with the massive break between WCS events this year?

It's because they had Leipzig so early. First event last year was Austin in April. The gap was shifted from the beginning to the middle of the year.

When do they announce RO16 groups for NA and Europe? Isn’t that only a couple of days away?

Sweet! Thanks for the link!
Pity Scarlett ended up in a group with two of her countrymen, but she should be able to make it to the playoffs pretty easy there. Same with Neeb.
Group D looks like the toughest group for both EU and NA.

Huh, would've thought that on EU all the groups would be 1 invited + 1 GM + 2 Open qualifier.
