This was unusual because Starcraft 2 did not update something (maybe virus attacking server?). I decided to disable Avast and i was able to log and and make a test game + see if other people were on, which there was (maybe using something other than avast). In conclusion, this problem is due to the virus program blocking something thinking it was a potential threat, which is overall odd, because the game has not update itself and was working this morning (EST).
ahh... had i not been typing to much, i would have beat him -.- still odd why it was working then, but not now.
This happened to me too. Avast said there was a virus so I moved it to the chest. It was in the Blizzard something or other folder. Now the module error message comes up.

Yeah the program data thing worked, cheers guys. <3

How do you access the "Real-time Shields > File System Shield > Expert Settings > Exclusions." part of the avast antivirus? I've searched through the folders and I've tried to go through the avast settings but I can't find it anywhere. The only thing I could add exceptions to is in the settings for the virus scanner but not the real-time scanner.

What if your in Vista, how do you remove it from the chest or put it in the exceptions?
|
So what really happened, because i'm getting the same problem. Is it also Blizzards fault or is it just the antivirus (avast)?
|
Hmm, so I managed to get the older visual of the avast controls, and I went into the battle chest and simply restored it out of the chest. It seems to work for now, was that something that won't compromise my security? Thanks. PS Also the problem seems to be that avast detects something benign as a virus, I'm thinking thats avast's fault, but I very well could be wrong.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Blizzard Entertainment\* also try C:\ProgramData\Blizzard Entertainment\* if that doesn't work Thank you very much, that worked perfectly. The problem is indeed Avast blocking it.

I am getting this error and I don't use Avast. I use Norton Security Suite which I have tried disabling etc. I have tried reinstalling more times than I can count, repairing, deleting/modifying the cache folders...nada. Anyone know anything else I can try? I'm using Win7 x64.

I think I am having a similar problem. I am trying to download the game client for SC2 on a Macbook Pro, and every time I download the installer, it stops the download and gives me an error message "There was a problem authenticating your download. Please go to http://www.blizzard.com/account/ to start a new download." I have tried new downloads countless times, and it stops and gives me the same error message every time. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution? I've sent Blizzard's tech support an email, but I'm not sure how long they will take to get back to me. Any help that you guys can offer is much appreciated.

Make sure you're using the right region prefix. an eu.battle.net is different from us.battle.net.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I believe I have good reason to. In case someone else gets the same problem as me, this thread is what comes up when searching for "download authentication module", and avast wasn't the issue. (Also, there is only one relevant thread on google, and it's in german, and blizzard support forums doesn't to my knowledge shed light on this problem)
I spoke to a blizzard support person just recently, and she was able to help me. The problem was that before I even get to the login-screen I got the error message "Unable to download authentication module. Please try again later." According to blizzard, this means that the battle.net cache has been corrupted (I believe that in my case this happened during a windows 7 update that ran this morning). The solution was simply to locate the cache folder (for me it was c:\programdata\blizzard entertainment\battle.net\cache) and rename it to for example cache.temp. Sc2 will then download the cache again, which fixed the error for me.
And thank you blizzard for speedy and competent support, I've never had reason to call you before, but this was a delight.
