I am very disappointed that ZoW has yet made this a thread. But Mahjong is very fun recreational activity. One that we TLNY'ers love. The TLNY Mahjong players, consisting mostly of Brood War community try to kill time and boredom over our boring boring weekends by playing Mahjong.
What we do:
This pretty much sums it up. We play mahjong which played by 4 players and 4 players only. We play by HongKong Rules btw.

scoring is also different Chinese plays with Flower tiles that gives you points and warrants a dead wall draw. I believe chinese tiles don't have doras though
Y'all are going down this weekend. I have a ton of experience in mahjong with single player computer games, as well as going over to play in mahjong parlor sometimes. Also, whenever I go to my relatives, there is always a game of mahjong going on. Combined with my experiences of watching cheesy/classic Chinese mahjong movies, I can't lose!
If only CSheep did not have that study abroad trip...
Blast, Chinese is 3-3-3-3-2, with a 13+1 tile set.

All Pongs are 3 Points. I know how to count points, so we're fine. Obviously we should play at least a one-point minimum because there would be no point in playing chicken hands with zero points, thus zero money to earn.

Mahjong confuses me to no end. I've got a set, and ie played it a bunch of times, but I still have no idea how to play it any differently than just flipping over tiles until someone wins.

Not sure if serious...
Okay, the definition doesn't really apply but still do not change the fact that it is a spin-off. Either way l"ll try not to detract from the topic anymore.
Edit: @rgfdxm Yeah, I really should stop solely relying on emoticons to communicate that I am not serious. I concur that Akagi is awesome though that washizu game is going on foreverrrrr hot damn. If you didn't see the manga, I highly recommend it. That is where Akagi initally came from.

I guess that came out harsher than I intended, I actually appreciate the recommendation. Akagi (the anime) was what sparked my interest in mahjong to begin with, and last time I went to Japan I picked up 15 volumes or so of it.
is there a good tutorial anyone here can recommend? (besides the manga) still haven't watched akagi because i wanted to know a bit more about the game beforehand

oh wow thanks for the link (could've used search function but didn't expect there to be a tutorial on TL ^^). and it does look quite simple .. i always thought you have to know like 50 tile combinations to be able to play. also only time i saw mahjong was in gintama (they did a parody of akagi) so it kinda confused me.
After reading a bit, just try to play few games on Tenhou (you don't have to make a ID and just play as NoName) and you'll get the basics pretty quickly. In fact, is there anyone willing to quickly play few games on Tenhou here? If there is one more I can get 3-person game going and teach you the basics on IRC as game progresses I think.

That is probably the most accurate representation of what goes on in Mahjong. The only difference would be that all the players have cigarettes, but you can usually forgive the minor details.

it's Blasty (by shortening Blasterion) in japanese written form,
This year, the Tournament will be round elimination based. There will be 16 seats available, divided into 4 tables. The top 2 players from each table will proceed to the next round. Prizes will be awarded to the top 4 players in the Tournament.
The rules for this Reach mahjong tournament is as follows:
* Closed Simples * Aka Dora ~ 2 red 5 pins only * Cannot pon, if first opened with a chi * Warame enabled (The person's wall that is broken in the deal; if he wins, gets payed double, if someone ron off of him, he pays double) * Yakitori(-20,000 pts if a player hasn't won a hand during an entire game.) * Paarenchan (8 consecutive wins from a dealer, 9th round any hand is yakuman) * Double Ron enabled * If a Dealer deals more than 2 turns, than 2 yaku is required to go out. * Yakuman bonus (+30,000pts) * Kan of aka dora (+3,000pts)
NOTE: Standard Riichi rules apply, with the above modifications.

Better look up the scoring rules on Wikipedia, surprisingly, they have a good resource for counting. Hopefully, CSheep's venue would allow me to scream more in Cantonese during the matches and bring out the worst in me.

Those numbers are stacked with basic values. They're low because they're actually easy to make compared to others. Don't ask me, those are the rules that I play with, and are typically used in parlors.

After asking my aunt and uncle about points, Robbing the Kong and Out on Replacement (Flowers) should be 1 point, not 2 as previously stated above. Replacement on Kong is 2 points.
Nah, just a couple of decent sized hands and a looot of small hands.

ah ok. So I guess somebody was east for a VERY LONG TIME. Since the dealer keeps winning the game keeps going =P Surprised to see ZoW so deep in the reds though.
The event was 2-13, and you might want to spoiler the results so that the OP doesn't get big quickly.
CSheep was very generous of tiles for me to complete the chi sets. In fact, during the second round, CSheep was dealer to ZnF, and the comparisons to CSheep's play in LoL were typical first blood. Of course, ZnF makes a chi from the first discard.
Most of my wins were basically all chis with a self-pick for the 2 points, because that type of play brings in the points the fastest. Also, what was in my favor was a strong opening hand of 8 points against ZoW, but he later had payback with a 10 pointer against me (Granted, I did say that he was going to win after my discard).
I don't even remember the number of times we all said scumbag.
Also, Wyrm was technically playing with ZnF's pile of money, and was +8 during the games.

the only thing worse than.6 points is thirty points into the reds All in good fun though. there are some players that are really strong during eat and then aren't as good during other winds. But east best wind yo. Gotta capitalize on that shit.
Japanese mahjong rewards closed hands. Most yaku cannot be made/loses some values once your hand becomes open. Hope you enjoy the Jap rules. I've played both HK and Jap and I find that Jap mahjong requires a lot more skill to play well.

We're starting up a weekly mahjong meetup in NY. Had 2 meetings so far.
Can only 9 gate with closed hand =/ It's so hard to keep a poker face when I am Tenpai =( so bad, the entire table knows I am tenpai because I can't keep myself from giggling. I might as well riichi everytime.
I want to hold on to me wind/ dragon tiles T.T but the right thing to do in early game is to toss them =/ then you draw it again and you can just curse your luck
I will be available Friday, after much discussion with clients! Now, what time will the event be, so that I can be a scumbag and go to Barcraft after Mahjong games. (Unless we have games overnight).
On March 20 2012 12:42 Carnivorous Sheep wrote: Jap requires a lot more luck with its heavy insistence on closed hands...
That's quite a generalization. Do you mean it's more luck based because you cannot influence your draws? It's a 4 player game and you will only win 25% of all games, so "not losing" is much more important than winning. Even then, open tanyao and yakuhai are very easy to make yaku for open hands and add up with dora for fast wins. Some houserules (kuitan nashi) don't allow open tanyao. On tenhou, that would be the first row. Scrubs on the English tenhou lobby (those who started to play because of whatever mahjong anime aired at that time) love to press those shiny buttons and make open hands, so much that the term "pon palace" was coined.
I don't live in NY, but I'd love to play you (or other TLers) on tenhou (tenhou.net/0/?7447).

Maybe, but I just don't like the idea that for some hands you have to simply sit there, do nothing (I guess you have to pick the best tiles to discard, but meh, still pretty passive), and hope to draw the right tiles to make your hand.
Also does Tenhou not allow open tanyao? I guess that explains why I couldn't make hands when I tried doing that lol.
http://www.azaz.se/mahjong/yaku overview.pdf You can do pretty much anything with an open hand, but it will be worth less since open hands are easier to make. Toitoi can only be open (would be a yakuman if closed) Chiitoitsu (7 pairs) cannot be open (obviously)
im just curious but since you guys play this style with "points" doesnt it induce the strategy to always go for low scoring hands? i've noticed a couple of my friends do this when we use the "points style" to keep score.

The optimal strategy for any mahjong game has always been going for the lowest amount of points, as they are the easiest to win. In our group of mahjong, I am the scumbag that does this. Without a point system, everyone would go for a 0 point hand, and there would be no gambling done, nor any fun in creating hands of value. The game would degenerate into who can complete their random sets faster than the other people.
With a point minimum, you discourage chicken hands. The reason that most parlors play with a 1-point minimum is for the gambling aspect and payout; the games tend to be quick. Our group plays with a two-point minimum, which slows down the pace of the game slightly, but not discourage an all-sequence hand. A three point minimum mostly discourage an all sequence hand, and every match would either be going for a half/full-flush, or a pong palace game. To boost the half/full-flush reward, our group plays with 4/7 rather than the standard 3/6 for parlor.
Notable things this weekend: CSheep feeding West into a Double Win for 14 points. Blasterion: Waterloo ZoW: Going with success for Limit Hands. I don't understand how this guy does it.
Moonlight Sonata needs to be played 24/7.
Rankings so far in our play: ( I disregarded results for the first meetup, as that was not a relevant result that I could figure out, or the 3rd game where ZNF was tired and will never pay out)
How are we going to do this if CSheep's place only allows 4 guests, if there are 5 or more guests wanting to come visit? Also, should I grab lunch from Halal Cart at 53rd and 6th before heading there, or should I hold it off for late-nite adventures?

There aren't online programs that do this well, unfortunately like Tenhou. I remember the days of going onto Yahoo! Mahjong to play, but you would have to know how to count points and the point system was weird. The best that I can recommend is a single-player program called HKMJ (Hong Kong Mahjong). It's a paid program, but there are free demos to download, or search online to find the full program.

No idea, since some people have to consider watching the SKT vs. KT Proleague finals on Sunday morning. I'll be available.
Im on spring break starting tomorrow so i can do whatever
Sheep is the only one with unclear plans for the weekend right now
Thursday/Friday Game? That would be awesome. I was questioning more on the endurance, as you would be watching PL finals, going to play Mahjong all the way until Monday morning. It's possible, but I don't know if you guys would want to do it.

Midterm Friday so this is a no for me, if you guys want to play get ZNF to come pick up the set or something.

Just get a daily pass or something
Get a Non-Driver ID or a Learner's Permit (You can wing the exam) for your situation. Both are cheap options to take, plus you might as well learn how to drive since you're from Bayside.

Well the thing is that Zow doesn't want to play if all he's going to do is play one game and leave. It'd be good if we can try to arrange for maybe at least two games or something like that, so we don't waste our time.
If we can't, then Saturday is still good, and we can play on Sunday too.

I'm down any time. At this point is' up to Blasty, wyrm, phelix, sheep. I know Sheep's midterm is going on right now, so once he's done we can maybe ask if he wants to play.

Well, we have to make a list for tomorrow.

They don't take passports. Like they 100% don't take passports. Doesn't matter how hard you beg or how pathetic you look lol. Liability issues from when they lost some kid's passport last year or something so ya.

Error in this calculation, because there is a chip missing either from Me or Csheep. I'm guessing it's CSheep, so I'll add the point to him. I am at +73, not +75. Thus, Csheep is at -44, not -45.
Payouts Since Last Paid last week: Blast:-47 Csheep:-43 Phelix:25 ZnF:5 ZoW:56 Wyrm:4
If you want the Excel Spreadsheet, I can send it to you guys or through Google Docs.
To ZoW: Tentative. Depends on how early do I have to leave, and I can't stay for dinner. The earlier the time, the better that I can play more games.
phelix goes on a nice win streak 2nd half of the day zow gets our first last tile draw win zow rising sun'd by sheep sheep revenges zow for discarding into full flush while waiting on limit hand zow and znf waiting on north/south respectively for rising sun only to end in draw and realize they each held the last one zow refuses 5 man from wyrm for win, only to tsumo it on the next tile
So I just checked the rules, and that robbing a concealed kong is not possible. I guess we have to change our house rules to reflect this (currently we can).
Meetup on Friday? That or I'll be the scumbag that goes to Barcraft and hang out with other people. Maybe I'll come extra early to clean tiles in CSheep's room.
On April 11 2012 14:16 Carnivorous Sheep wrote: If you can't rob concealed kongs and can't rob open kongs, what can you rob under those rules...?
Basically, Robbing the kong involves the player kong the 4th tile by draw. Since the player would have no use for that tile, the kong is a special move that the player can do to get a fresh tile off the dead wall. Makes sense, honestly.
I remembered this only because I was watching Koizumi Rising Sun'ed Kim Jong Il, where Taro Aso concealed Kong the 8 man, thus not allowing KJI to win off the Democratic People's Riichi.
Hmm, All Terminals is only Pongs of 1s and 9s, and not Honors. Replacement on flower doesn't net anything extra.
I know CSheep can't play tomorrow, but does anyone else actually want to play tomorrow? I'll grab the set from him and if you guys want I have a place we can play @.
Didn't get any message, would not have gone anyway.
Things that happened this week: Last Discard Win: Phelix off of ZoW 13 Orphans: Zow off of Phelix Wyrm getting an 11-point self-pick. Wyrm also going for many Tannhauser, leading the discussion of whether CSheep is Wagner or not. ZnF climbing back from the depths of the Power Rank.
Tentative on both dates, have to check if things work out or not this week. Do we have enough Coca-Cola at CSheep's place, or do we have to carry another case there?
Maybe I can spare some Power Ranking points by attempting only Half-Flushes/Pong Palace this week instead of Peace on Earth.

Friday at ZnF's? Do we need to buy more Coke again? Yes, we should send Wyrm off in style, by losing all his money, then having a journey to China to regain all his skills, comes back and wins all the money in the future when he comes back...
I think we all had four hours of sleep, and you might as well just call me a scumbag because I'm the one that's not feeling well and therefore telling you guys to stay away from my sick body till later.
In other words, just blame me.
In all honesty, in the future, if we're going to meet up at NYU, you might as well just text me and see if the meet up is actually happening before hand and if me (or Sheep) is ready to host you guys. We've had a couple of foul ups in the last week because we're pretty unorganized and we just randomly assume things will work out somehow.
Sometimes they don't, and this is the product: everyone is unhappy. This isn't to place the blame on anyone. If anything, this time is probably my fault alone, but I'm just saying that we need to be more organized about this if we want to prevent ourselves from coming here and not having anyone to play with.

Just curious why the OP is plastered with pictures from japanese mahjong manga and anime, yet you don't play japanese mahjong. Seems a little silly to me.

quite frankly if you don't have enough money to blow on $2500 buy ins you shouldn't be in NYC
I'm available Friday, but not sure who else will be available. Caller, remember that ZnF is the type of person that will leave his phone silent, so you'd better contact someone else to let you in the building.
I'm down for HK Mahjong or Japanese, I need to get the hang of scoring anyway. Pinfu-Tsumo, all simples every game.
Since nothing happened last week, are we doing anything for this week, with the Wix Lounge meetup closeby? Also, I will need the mahjong set for Saturday, so I will pick it up whenever ZnF's available.
1. Are we going to do the Wix Lounge meetup on Friday? I promised someone that I'd go there, so I'll probably head there for the duration of the meetup.
2. Isn't it finals weekend at NYU? Therefore, there would be tons of people studying, and I wouldn't want to bother them over the weekend if you decide to play.
3. I am busy on Saturday and Sunday, so I cannot attend those days.
4. I would like to see ZnF/CSheep before going back home over the summer.
It's Blasterion for the 4th. Blasty hasn't been posting on TL because he's banned. I'll be there, depending on what time I wake up/want to eat lunch or something.

I have to go somewhere this weekend too. Why does my schedule always conflict?
On September 24 2012 15:21 Wyrm_uW wrote: Tell me about this earlier this week plx <3
See, the problem is that the hosts of the event, SheepnF tend to schedule events at the last minute, while you want prior notice. I guess the only thing you can do is to check on this thread, or you could contact me on Steam to see if the event is happening or not, as I am usually updated with these meetups.
These events are happening at night, which definitely cuts down on playing time. There should be some afternoon sessions to make up for it.
If you guys want to do something, let us know early. I'm indifferent but I'd rather not you guys set up something last minute since I need to go out this weekend for an essay.
Aww Sheep! I only met you once but I remember you had a first-time sick Settlers of Catan strat buying cards while hotbid and mango ran interference on my wife and me. I hope we can be there for your bday celebration when you do it.
I am willing to play Settlers of Catan. Obvious best strategy must be hoarding all the sheep so that CSheep does not get any.
Advance notice not needed for me, but at least post a general estimate in the thread for time and date. This will depend on going to Comic-Con this weekend, and hoping to get free swag. I'm interested in WCG USA for the World of Tanks gameplay and how teams play this.
I also want to bring along Blast, who will be back from China tomorrow, if that's okay with you guys.
Edit: Also, kibibit, can you try to fix my headphones, I tried opening it up myself, but I am so afraid of damaging it further. I'll pay for whatever costs you incur, such as a spare cable.

Don't come early. I don't want to sign a bunch of people in. We're meeting at Blue Place probably at 6 so just be there and whoever gets there first put down your name.
Gonna be moving out soon. Phelix, Zow, do you guys mind if you hold onto some of my stuff again? I could pay for storage if you guys want, and it'll be less than last time as I'm going to be throwing out some stuff, but if you could that'd be very much appreciated.
