I'm not entirely sure that unit promotions have been added into the game so far, but by the looks of some screenshots, chevrons have been added. Just in case, I'm going to put my ideas out there as to why unit promotions should not be added.
Starcraft is known for its large amount of units on-screen and continuous attacks, making it an exciting game to play and watch. If chevrons/unit promotions are added, it is likely that players will be encouraged to camp rather than harass or continuously attack the other player. Thus, the whole unit promotion thing should be left out of Starcraft 2.
Starcraft is a great game because people CAN AFFORD to throw away units in hopes of hurting the opponent's economy. Pro players often utilize simultaneous small drops rather than dropping their entire army in one spot. With unit promotions, the latter will be a much safer option because with a large drop, the units can survive longer, gain more kills, and it will be easier to protect your promoted units. So, in conclusion, unit promotions will also restrict novel strategies by players.
These are just a few examples of why unit promotions will harm starcraft 2 gameplay.

Agreed. I never liked the idea of unit promotions, it makes you too focused on individual units and encourages you to keep all your units in big groups.

i think blizzard should go one step further and eliminate not just unit promotions, but units altogether

One more reason surf hunters are not a very good idea

Or maybe it's just an extension of how BW keeps track of unit kills, just for looks.

you are wrong in so many aspects that i cant even be bothered to comment on ur post. So many nay sayers around here, i know plenty of games with a ranking system and in many of them it adds an interesting aspect to the game.

I love how you deduced all of this from one small black and yellow marking in 1 screenshot.

They might only be cosmetic. The gameplay-irrelevant kill counts for units in Starcraft are fun, they might just be making that information more visible.

Maybe it's only the unit you have selected and it shows how many kills it has, such as quasi -QS- suggested. I don't think that would be a terrible idea, as long as they don't get any bonus' from the kills. Then again I would much rather they leave an option to turn them off because with marines or small units like that it would get confusing with all of those ranks above their heads.

You mean your Demon Hunter, oops I meant Soul Hunter.

If there is a bonus for kills and the feel of the races keeps the same (ie, zerg has the weakest, uses swarm tactics) basic structures, then there will be serious balance issues. I mean, look at a TvZ. How many units will Zerg have with multiple kills as opposed to the Terran forces?
I know SC2 isn't going to be SC, but part of the best aspect of the game is that all three races play very differently from eachother. I don't think they'll change one of the biggest appeals the game has in that, so that means keeping at least one very mobile, swarm-based race. Meaning that if an individual kill upgrade were implemented, that one race would be at a severe disadvantage, because one side inevitably has longer lasting units.
I don't think Blizzard is going to do this, else to keep the design they're going to have to make units with different abilities, but ultimately the same strengths for every race and that takes away from each of their individual uniqueness.

No, please go on. I would sincerely like to hear exactly why you think that Starcraft 2's gameplay will benefit from unit promotions.

No they've clearly said they wouldn't, only in single player.
