Now this post reminded me and I'm sad that I don't have one again. So if any of you gentlemen that are somehow rolling around in keys want to share, Id be quite grateful.

The beginning to D2 was just abysmally bad. You start in an unnamed camp with no relevance to anything, and it's full of lifeless NPCs who give you pointless, unconnected quests (hello Den of Evil). You then kill random forest critters by left-clicking on them for 5 hours because the game doesn't actually give you any good skills until you're at least in act 2. D3, on the other hand, starts you with a sense of purpose in a remade, iconic Diablo location. You kill undead because they're part of the story, not just randomly there for the killing. The quests are linked together, and within 30 minutes you already have a couple useful, class defining skills that make combat pretty fun. As for the atmosphere, there's not a ray of sunshine in sight, the town is under siege, bodies are being piled into carts, etc. If you don't think that's dark and serious, I don't know what to say. Maybe the rest of the game sucks ass, but Blizzard did a remarkably good job with the first 2 hours, especially compared to Diablo 2.

Maybe the rest of the game sucks ass, but Blizzard did a remarkably good job with the first 2 hours, especially compared to Diablo 2. Act1 was my favourite part of d2. I loved the level design. The quests were loosely connected, but connected nevertheless. The ultimate goal was to chase Diablo, which requires you to kill Andariel and open the gates of the monastery for the caravan. The other quests are side quests that help you with your quest. Den of Evil is right next to your camp, it makes sense to clear this threat. Blood Raven was corrupted by Andariel. Tree of Infusis and Rescue Cain missions were interlocked, and Deckard Cain is our guide/mentor in defeating the Prime Evils. Retrieving the Malus allows Charsi to imbue an item of our choice, possibly helping you defeat Andariel.

Diablo 3 gives you a good intro/beginners stage but also contributes to the story and feel of the game. Diablo 2 was never really about the story imo, it was more like a gothic arcade that you can play with your friends. Can't wait to try the game myself so i can really comment on how the game feels! We'll have to disagree on whether it is bad storytelling if the quests were loosely connected. Combined with the awesome (especially for that time) cinematics, the quests added a lot to the lore. It was also a fun excuse to explore levels and get bonus skills/stats. I loved listening to the well voice-acted dialogues from all the NPCs and their reactions/advice for each of the various quests.
