When StarCraft 2 comes out, I played lots of rounds in the ladder - but after a time I switched more other modes (and games).
1on1 is for me quite stressful, even I know it is just a mind thing. Will see if this changes in the future again.

TL:DR People want to become a proffesional player but on the way there they just aim for that one goal instead of having fun on the way to there. Sorry for my bad english TT

Secondly you have to look at the type of game Starcraft is, unlike games like Call of Duty or Halo or even Battlefield, games that are built more around it's single player components but also have a very large following for it's online play, those games are made to be easy for anyone who is interested in playing the game. For casual play at least, those games don't require much "skill" to play I guess you can say, meaning compared to games like Starcraft 2 that require you to have supreme multitasking and logical thinking to play and win against better players, games like Call of Duty don't require much thought to play and progress in. Yes, there are outside factors such as school, work, or even new games that come out, but the main reason imo is that Starcraft in general is a much more difficult game to play, even when playing lower level ladder play when you're completely new to playing Starcraft or RTS games in general.

Here are a few of the reasons that I think may have caused this for myself: - ladder stress - poor interface - bad manners on the ladder - no shared replays (I really don't see why they can't put this in) - the protoss race seems underpowered (statistically proven) and I find it discouraging to play with an uneven playing ground (call it whining but it's how I feel) There are probably others that don't come to mind at this exact moment but these are most of the major ones for me.

+ I really dislike the point system for places in the league on the ladder. The matchmaker is great, and I think the divisions are great too, gold, platinum etc etc but I am sitting in place number 1 on all of my divisions, yet I know I am not skillfull enough to be promoted into the next category . If the points within the division had some logic I would find a sense of achievement sitting at the top. As it is, they mean nothing and I am stuck with no up's or down's in every aspect of the game. At least the warcraft system kept me fighting not to lose levels. I will keep going for promotion but its a long term nerdy goal that most normal people wouldn't bother with.

-it takes really to much time, you can't play for a week and when you come back you feel rusty. -a good 70% of the games are odds allins or lame shit that really bothers me -it's really stressfull and unforgiving when you make a little mistake and you throw away a 40 game minute -clan ( or ex clan mates ) stressing me for results and searching for me if i wont play ( it's a community-for fun-clan ) -continuos nerf to terran ( yes i play them ) -strange blizzard attitude to his battle net service ( i have been playing dota 2 for some time now and even if it's in beta they have shared replay, automatic tournaments, coaching, and so on. blizzard really? ) too bad. i'm a HUGE starcraft fan ( been playing it since the beginning of the beta, bought 2 limited editions and have my room filled with starcraft posters ), but these things are really game breaking for me

SC2 has the same problem I've always had with Blizz's RTS's... You have to train on a very regular basis or else you will degrade in skills very quickly.. If you are not able to play for a week it's almost like starting over and it's going to take dedication just to get to the point you used to be at before. I would love to go back to playing SC2 reguarly, but if I play I feel like I'm doing bad, and I'm not ready to dedicate myself to the game enough to get to that point again. It will happen again, but I'm not sure when... probably HotS.

As soon as i feel that i improved a bit, i'll ladder again. Practicing in custom games is soo much more efficient.

I play custom sometimes, but for the most part I just watch or play something else.
