I would think him using that word ups his chance for being an actual racist. So I fail to see how people are retarded who assuming he is racist when he uses a word associated with racism. You don't know Orb. You have never met him personally, you don't know what his personality is, what his political views are, what his views on race are. You don't know whether he's actually racist or not. Just because he threw out the N-word on his stream a few times does not make him a racist. If he goes up to black people and calls them the N-word or a coon to their face, that's a different story. So in summary, no it's not safe to assume Person B is a racist.

But it's different because it's the Internet and we're all safe behind the monitor. That gives us all an excuse to have this split personality where we can splurt out hateful words like a sociopath. Does that not sound psychotic?

No need to make a whole entire thread about it. I mean, you see these kinds of insults so often in the gaming community and claiming that orb is racist because he says nigger is jumping to conclusions. Just because he uses the word does not mean he means it in racist terms. It's a stupid conclusion. But this is a moot point. The main thing is he raged. Disappointing, certainly. To get all up in arms over when you see this often (especially when you have known ragers like Idra)? Overblown. Riddle: What is the difference between a witch and a racist? Answer: Sometimes a person is actually a racist.

People should always receive the consequences for the things that they did.. Do you disagree with a statement like that? If the person who Orb called the N word DID get offended that person would've done something a long time ago. Evidently, the people he used the word against never took action, it's just that the community looks for him using the words and then it all spreads and goes viral. Really, the only people who should be complaining are the ones who he has actually used the words against. If someone uses the internet and is involved enough to get on a site as Team Liquid they should have a skin thick enough and a brain big enough to first of all not visit a stream known to be BM and not take offense if he decides to throw out some BM.

I suspect Orb will be getting fired for lying to EG management about this, but should they fire him for his use of offensive language in the past, in his private life, I certainly will find that very extreme, and completely two faced. That's all. Really, that quote from February 2007, 5 years ago, before Idra was even a member of Evil Geniuses. Super relevant.

Nobody that is a public facing community member should be talking like that. Given how many kids here want to be pro gamers, how do they think they'll get there if no sponsor will touch gaming with a ten foot pole when everyone talks like this?

My guess is it's that they're afraid they might have to actually examine the way they use language themselves and not just go around the world like idiot children repeating any inanity that comes in through their ear-holes. Maybe you should examine the soundness of an argument which seeks to demonstrate personal, directed hatred on the basis of what a person says when they're feeling angry and frustrated. When you're angry, you're not TRYING to be polite or keep things under control. You've lost control! That's what being pissed off means! God, why is this so hard to understand? Orb didn't just go up to someone and say 'hey, you, yeah, you: you're a nigger." This is honestly the stupidest thread I've ever read on these forums (and that's saying a lot). This is a storm in a teacup, and I'm sick of this holier-than-thou presumption from people like you. Stop trying to allude to high concepts like philosophy of language (when what you want is psychology or sociology, by the way) or morality or history or whatever. This is a trivial event, and the only people that are offended are people like you who think they need to be offended on behalf of the people that these words are supposed to offend.

When he streams he does put himself in the public eye, and should be expected to exercise some restraint. I still don't think that he should be fired. I agree that he fucked up, but I think he deserves a chance at rehabilitation before he's exiled.

I can say at least for Sweden a lot of young kids have this trivial and respect-less attitude when it comes to racial slurs. I can't say for certain where it originates but one can at least try to guess. A conjecture, if you will, would be that it arises in racist households where the parents of these children liberally use such language in a derogatory and dominant fashion. Youth these days really have no clue about the history and why it is so sensitive when you compare it to the usual personal attack (like asshole, etc.). Then this language finds its way into schools and you can imagine the rest. I sometimes watch a friend of mine play HoN or LoL (the popular game here in Sweden) and the level of racial slurs is absurd and frankly disgusting. When people don't reprimand them for the behavior it enables others to join in. It's not socially acceptable behavior in any circumstance or context. The only people who think such behavior is excusable are most likely part of this group. Also the issue that somehow BM (bad manner, I feel like people forget what it actually stands for) is also something that is casual and OK because it's the internet falls into this category. Being BM already gives a negative reputation and gives a good indication what sort of person they are. There are a lot of players out there who are the exemplars of what a pro-gamer should be like; professionals like Sheth and White-Ra come to mind immediately. Also if you look at the Korean scene it is very clear that they have standards and stick to them. It's players and organizations like these who uphold these standards that help to spread e-sports around the world. If you truly care about e-sports then it becomes quite evident why such disgraceful behavior has to be rooted out. Anything less and e-sports will continue to be viewed as "for kids" or not serious. This. Today's "youth" (which seems to extend up to about age 30 anymore) just seem to think that they can say or do whatever they want and if anyone has a problem with it, the real problem is with anyone having a problem with it.

If Orb DOES get fired, they better justify it via the "lying to management" part, and not the content part. I'll even go as far as to quote IdrA here. Nobody cares if you say "faggot" anymore. This shouldn't have even been drama in the first place, and I personally don't think Orb should have even had the chance to lie about this to someone. Keep doing a great job of ruining great casters' opportunities Reddit. I vote you go for DJWheat next, he seems like a nice guy. I actually don't think there is a double standard, only that more people are more sensitive to the word "nigger".

For the love of god please close this thread! Do you really think that Teamliquid would close a thread that calls for the scrutinizing of racial slurs/bm? Are you aware that TL's policy on racist remarks reflect the exact feelings expressed by the OP? It's pretty obvious that the TL mods want this conversation to be had because it's IMPORTANT. If you said the N-Word in a malicious way on TL, you would be warned/temp-banned.
