The story goes,
It all started when I tried to install D3 on my PC, I got an error when trying to install it that said that I did not have the correct OS on my PC to play D3. I went to the support site, and it says that I need to have the latest updates for my system, so I went to Windows Update to see what was up, since I have it set to automatic.
Now, forgive me, because it seems that this problem had been occurring for a long time - two 'important' Vista updates had been failing to install correctly, one for two years and the other for one year. KB2393802 and KB971029. Essentially it appears that these updates had been installing 'correctly' then been being reoffered immediately as though they had not been installed. I checked my logs and it's been happening every few days like this, with the same updates, since they came out.
I've tried installing them both manually, when I do, I get an error message but no error code. I've tried running through the installs with all other programs closed, in safe mode and so on, and it still doesn't work.
At this point, I went to Google to see if people had the same problem as me - they had been, but it was usually for XP but it appears to have been a common problem. One thing that was often said was that one ought to try running 'Windows FixIt', so I tried downloading this problem. Here is the next problem, when I try to install this program, it tells me that my Windows .Net Framework needs to be v4.0.3019 in order to run the program, so I tried to update .Net, and apparently did so successfully, yet upon trying to run FixIt again, I got the same version problem. I've run the repair functions for .Net for both Client and Extended since having done the 'update', and tried to run FixIt again, no results.
At this point, I realised that my OS was only as Service Pack 1, so I downloaded number two and tried to install it. It said that I had not downloaded Service Pack 1 and wouldn't let me install number two. I re verified that I actually have Service Pack 1 - I really really do have it. I tried to reinstall number one, and it told me again that I already have it.

Bottom line, I can't update my Microsoft Vista Home Premium to Service Pack 2, nor can I update .Net Framework apparently. I've been reoffered the same updates for Vista for nearly two years now. The problem has evidently existed for a while, but I'm not sure if all of my problems are connected since I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff. I'm really at my wit's end, please help me if you can! I just wanted to play Diablo 3!
My system
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9400
RAM: 4GB
Video Card: GeForce 9800 GT
I don't know if that info is pertinent, but there it is anyway. As a non techie, not knowing any vocab, my guess is that for some reason my PC has a problem recognising 'updates' to its' system, if that can be an underlying problem I don't know what caused it but that's all I can see when looking at it.
