If you go to program files/starcraft/broodwar, find broodwar.exe, and copy this as a shortcut file to your desktop.
After this is done, right-click the shortcut, and select properties. Change the resolution to old school colour schemes and also select to run the game under a windows vista or windows XP service pack.
Your broodwar game should work fine from here on in.
read the damn thread.

So I just installed XP on VirtualMachine and when starting Brood War it stays in its small window with black bars around it instead of using my desktop resolution. How can I fix this?
|
Maximize your VM window?
I think there is a plugin to make the window go fullscreen, but I'm not sure if it is for VMWare or VirtualBox, try to look on that if you want to make the virtual machine window fullscreen.
If you are talking about iCCup Launcher/Chaos Launcher window, then there should be an option to make it either fullscreen or windowed mode, just tick it.
If you try the 2x window and it doesn't fit in your screen, you need to use your graphics card manager to make a resolution high enough to make the 2x window fit in it.

I'm using VirtualBox and I can maximize my VM Desktop with no problems but when I start Brood War it doesn't resize. It is fullscreen however because there are black bars around the small BW window. I think you misunderstood me.
Now for some reason it won't even let me connect to iCCup...fml

Reading this thread makes me love my Vista so much.

this is because you are rendering 640x488 to a unscaled portal, instead switch virtualbox to scaled mode.
....make sure 2d acceleration is disabled though or the vm will freeze when switching back to windowed.

The problem is I can't move the camera with the mouse T_T At the top right hand corner of the window, along the top bar, you will see little icons. One of them looks like a little mouse pointer. Click that and it will lock the mouse into the BW window, and you will be able to move the screen with the mouse!

No, that does NOT fix the crash.
don't just sign up and post in a thread that you obviously didn't bother reading.

I read the thread. I also said that that script fixed it for me. You have to realise that windows is a mess of an OS and what works for some people might not work for others. You realise that some don't even have this problem. So don't be project your anger on me for not fixing your problem.

i think servipack 1 fix the crash

It might be your video card driver settings. Right click, set it to scale or stretch instead of original size or keep aspect ratio.
Edit - Also, just notice reply a bit late. Oh wells, for future reference anyway.

Yeah Vista is my favorite OS.
Vista got bad rep early on mainly due to things like incompatibilities with a lot of software/drivers early on, and the fact it's always cool to hate on new things from big companies (microsoft, apple, etc), and the bandwagon rolled on.
Vista is a mix of XP and 7, and was actually in development "after" Windows 7 (in a way, Vista was a beta for 7 as 7 was was planned before Vista).
Personally I miss how the task bar works in Vista (you know how all programs are displayed in a list rather than in a table).
Fortunately you can change that in 7 with a registry fix. Also in Vista you can disable auto arrange inside of folders (in 7, you can but only on desktop) while in 7, you can't.
Ehh, yeah a bit off topic.

Yes, I did the enable/disable color thingie too and it stopped crashing. The colors get fucked up in the menus and on b.net, but not in game.
My current problem is that in only on W7 for me, the game screen is centered and not stretched or filled, so I have 2 huge black strips at all times and a smaller "game screen."

It might be your video card driver settings. Right click, set it to scale or stretch instead of original size or keep aspect ratio.
If you have Nvidia video cards (for example), right click on desktop and click nvidia control panel.
Click (under display) "Adjust desktop position and size".
Set scaling either to aspect ratio (with black borders to keep ratio similar to the original) or full screen (which stretch to fit monitor).
If that's already been done and it still doesn't scale, I'm not sure.

Like my previous post regarding Vista (again Vista is really good after SP2, it's a mix of XP and 7; Vista actually was developed after Windows 7, and it was technically just a beta for 7), people liked to bandwagon hate on things.
I remember reading articles from various sites (not tech sites specifically but humor sites for example) which were hating on 7 before it came on (hating on new stuff from popular companies is rad and will get you views; also useful if you run out of actual funny stuff).

I've been dealing with this problem so long, playing windowed mode and trying my best to deal with it. I've noticed however my friends windows 7 computer does not have this problem and I thought, maybe it had to do with my built in graphics card. So I decided to buy the cheapest graphics card in bestbuy and ever since, I've never had this freezing screen problem on broodwar.
However this solution cost a bit of money... EDIT: Nevermind it froze...
