Time units was a huge part of the game, and I really liked how it worked. Dumbing down that part of the game would be a huge hit to the depth of the game unless something else is added in its place. I really hope that the ability to have soldiers drop or throw items to each other makes it in. Having the right equipment for a mission was huge, and figuring out ways to allocate it among your troops before and during missions was another bit of fun strategy. The significant consequences to being injured played a large part in the atmosphere of the game because you were always tense and on edge about making sure you proceeded carefully through dark environments/maps to avoid getting injured. Having to bring along at least one soldier who could act as a medic was another strategic nuance I liked. The lack of friendly fire (if true) would take away from the game as well because it, again, made you really have to think whether a shot was worth taking. I really hope the game isn't dumbed down significantly... :/ Both of you guys expressed my problems with the new XCOM. Basically they whored themselves out for console gamers to make an XCOM-lite for idiots.

Yeah, I'm like a crack addict - I get hooked on any turn based shit I get my hands off - some worse, some better. And some that shouldn't even be touched with a pole. Edit: To above poster: I agree, although I've come to terms with that. I think I will at least get some enjoyment out of the game

I definitely agree that the apparent lack of friendly fire for non-explosive weapons seems to be a mistake, especially in a tactical game which seems to place heavy emphasis on positioning. I haven't seen any evidence either way if having a teammate in your line of fire at least decreases your accuracy (as they block part of your shot) or not. Hopefully you'll at least be punished that much for poor positioning. I'm still not entirely sold on the replacement TU system. It doesn't seem bad, but the flexibility does seem somewhat limited. I'm hoping that the way weapons are balanced (accuracy, magazine size, etc) will still create some degree of uniqueness between them. I also understand that TUs were a pretty opaque system that's hard to figure out exactly what you can/can't do in a given turn, so I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm thinking this game will be good, but I'm also keeping an eye on Xenonauts for a closer feel to the original with a better interface.

I get that! But it doesn't stop me from being fucking ecstatic for this game. I played it at PAX Prime and it was fantastic. I cannot wait to play it in a little over a week.

I wonder why I never got into JA2.

So if you want free cosmetic items for your soldiers or a free copy of civ V (available instantly) now is a good time! LOL, free copy of Civ5, shows you how successful that sequel was. Which reminds me, I need to bust out Civ4:BTS again. One-unit-one-tile was a total disaster. I hear you, I gave it a chance, downloaded the demo. It will still be a good game, but it's not XCOM. Even SC2 manages to capture most of the essence of BW, but the new XCOM bears very little resemblance to the original XCOM in any of the fundamental game mechanics. I read/watched all the dev interviews, and they gave reasonable-sounding (but ultimately unconvincing) justifications for each change. But if you sit back and look at the cumulative effects of the changes, it's pretty obvious. The game has been intentionally dumbed-down for consoles. Maybe that's just industry reality. Maybe to get the money needed for a AAA title, you need the console revenue. Fine. I'll play Xenonauts alpha for now, and come back to XCOM in a year, after it's been patched and modded. As the EG figurehead you need to stay relentlessly upbeat about everything remotely game-related, I get that. But I don't.

XCOM is clearly different things to different people. Seems like some people in this thread would be happy with anything turn based where you fight aliens. The tiny squads and simplistic mechanics cannot give me the experience I'm looking for. Reading about the simplified base management turned me off too. Also I find it hard to trust Fireaxis to deliver a well made game. They did a completely dogshit job implementing Civ5, it took them a lot of patches and a big expansion to get that game to a point where I felt comfortable recommending it to friends.

45 minutes video showing alien base assault. edit:fyi since it happened a few times through the video, overwatch shots through walls are supposedly fixed in the release version. and holy shit if that wasn't a bug when shots went through friendly units without them taking damage...
