Looked and I couldn't find a thread for Orange is the New Black, the latest original series from Netflix, so I thought I would take the liberty.
Orange is the New Black is the story of Piper Chapman, a woman who carried drug money for her then girlfriend only to be tried and convicted for the crime ten years later. She is serving a year and change in a federal corrections facility. All the while she is trying to maintain her relationship with her fiance, played by Jason Biggs.
The creator of this show also created the popular show Weeds.
1. Thoughts on the show so far? 2. Where do you think season two will go? 3. How do you think it stacks up to House of Cards? 4. Comparisons to be made to Weeds?
Please tag any spoilers accordingly.

Loved the show. Watched the first season in about a week. I think the characters are really engaging. They do a great job of combining the little bit of expected drama with funny stuff.
The lead characters (Alex, Piper, and.. Larry? I think is the fiance's name) are excellent thus far, and the supporting cast is great as well. Season 2 will be interesting to see what happens to Piper after the end of season 1. Personally, I am enjoying this more than House of Cards, I got bored with House of Cards fairly quickly but I have always wanted to re-watch it. The only comparison I see between Orange is the New Black and Weeds is the brand of humor.

Ive only just started watching, but this qould be a neat twist: Nancy Botwin turns herself in during like season 3 or 4 of weeds. Gets sent to the same prison. We watch the relationship between her and the crazy russian unfold as a side plot.

Poor Ms. Prepon will always be Donna from Wisconsin to so many people.

its a really good show , enjoyed watching it

Watched the whole season in a day. It's decent, but somehow I didn't like the season finale, i don't know why.

i enjoyed it a lot, i hope they dont go too deep into the drama zone next season.

I loved how human the characters were and really felt for them all. Pipers speech to the Scared Straight girl was amazing. Crazy Eyes. I am not sure exactly what the meth faith healer is supposed to represent, but the story isn't over for me.
This show doesn't make me laugh, I mean Big Bang Theory makes me laugh more honestly, the reason I watch is for the great characters and storyline.
I disliked the constant swearing, I am not being 'that guy' but it just gets in the way of the script for me. The theme song grosses me out, just have hangups with the extreme closeups. Love the song though. Still haven't finished it, had to work this summer need 3 more episodes.

Just finished House of Cards. Was amazing. Gonna jump on this next.. Really hoping netflix knocked this one out of the park too

Jenji Kohan is amazing at creating characters and dialogue. I love how the stories progress kinda like lost where we see an individuals backstory throughout an episode. It is really well written and i cant wait for season 2

weeds was better, but this was entertaining as well. didnt really like the main character, but i loved the star trek captain and that 70's show chick in their respective parts.
edit: i have been pretty amazed at the quality of netflix's shows that they produce.

It's worth watching, I enjoyed it. Always think of Jason Biggs/ Larry as the guy from American Pie series but doesn't make any difference, his role suits it.

Watched all 13 episodes in about 2 days. Completely hooked, and I had to be coerced into watching the first episode. I've been recommending this show to anybody who will listen to me. The only downside is that we have to wait a year for next season.

Well we were made to watch him do masturbate in both parts, so not like the two are that far apart.

i have heard this show described as "Oz without the violence and rape."

no, the main character is pretty likeable from the get go, she's a bit spoiled but she's far from being entitled or selfish

I just watched the first episode and this thread gives this show way to much credit. It wasn't anything special

This show was very enjoyable, and I was planning on making a thread soon if someone else didn't.
Pros: (1) There are almost no characters in the show where it is clear that you are supposed to like or hate them (underdeveloped side characters obviously not included). They all have moments where they look like awful people, but also redeeming moments of humanity where they sacrifice to help their friends. (2) There is a trans woman who is actually played by a trans woman (perhaps one of the rarest things in television). (3) Actual lesbians. In lesbian relationships that are not just about the sexual gratification of the viewer. (4) The characters are diverse. Unlike many shows where you would be hard pressed to find a major character without flawless skin and teeth, when I watch this show, I feel like I'm watching what could potentially be an actual place with real people in it.
Cons: (1) Only 1 season is out. (2) The main character, while she's had a few moments of redemption.... comes out looking really, really unlikeable by the end. This could potentially be a big problem in future seasons.
