He dropped out of school for Starcraft, is lazy when it comes to practice, loses on purpose against childhood friends, was called the “Coinflip Zerg” in Broodwar, won GSL at his second attempt back in January 2013 and turns 23 years today. Happy Birthday to Shin ‘RorO’ No Yeol.
Back in Broodwar, RorO had a special nickname, he was the “Coinflip Zerg”: When thrown into teammatches, the Korean would win about half of his matches – so you could have as well tossed a coin to decide his matches. “I am a little disappointed of myself”, RorO admits today, “that i did not practice harder.” The way he did, the Zerg never stood out in individual leagues, but on a good day way able to beat top-players like Jaedong and BoxeR.
RorO was one of the first KeSPA-players to switch to Broodwars sequel in 2012. At the Korean Nationals for 2012 World Championship Series, he finished on fourth place, giving him a spot at the Asian Finals, where he was eliminated by PartinG and HerO, ranking fifth in the end. “I didn’t feel i was up to the speed of the other players back then”, RorO says, so he took it as an experience.
From Code A to S – six consecutive seasons in GSL
But being succesful at the start of his new career made him lower his practice once again. “At the beginning, i watched many replays and trained a lot”, Shin explains, “but when i saw that i stood out, i started playing around.” He tested other races or had fun with his teammates at Samsung Khan.
Nevertheless the korean player association KeSPA decided to send RorO as one of four invites to GSL Code A. It turned out well: Shin fought in a tough bracket against AcE, Ryung and DongRaeGu, without losing a single map. This effort got him into Code S the next season where he dropped out against Hack and Symbol immediately.
His second attempt proved to be much more succesful: RorO was the first KeSPA-player to win GSL Code S getting revenge on Symbol in the finals where the Zerg won 4:2. It set another mark, because 2013 GSL Season 1 was the last to be played with WIngs of Liberty – so RorO is the last WoL-champion.
