I think if he game made getting heroes easier (they can still have hard to get ones, but right now outside or starter pack / base set heroes you're a little stuck). Then at least I could have experimented with different decks / play styles. Then I saved up a bunch of seals for the 5Towers box and was so disappointed with that set that I kind of lost interested. Been very casually farming up seals since then for BS2 / for my interest to revive. So I think I may as well give it a shot again. I really have no idea how the game whithered away so quickly. I did a few Jackpots last week and there were only something like 4k participants down from 10k+ in December. So it seems like I wasn't the only one who just lost the urge to play around then. In any case, game's still in maintenance no?

the reason hearthstone arena is so successful is it "masks" the grind, because you play a mini-lottery every time you make a new arena deck and everyone loves getting legendaries or 4 truesilvers or something in those. jackpot/swiss quickly becomes tedious for the vast majority of players who basically has no shot at winning. i personally had the best time when playing live MTG, even constructed because everyone was terrible and made crazy decks, but hey at least there was tons of variety. once there's online decklists, there's 0% chance i'll ever make a good deck so i just copy/paste in order to stay competitive, and guess how much fun that gets.

But at least HS offers a great alternative to grinding in Arena and is much easier to unlock different heroes and some basic cards do to mess around with and get an idea of a heroes flavor. On the topic of net decking and DoC, it did have a reasonable selection of viable top tier heroes with different playstyles, but I think brainless Crag Hack / Ishuma and answer-for-everything Cassandra / Adar-Malik wasn't exactly the right kind of diversity (I'm hoping these decks have been nerfed a bit since I last seriously played). Not to mention the effort involved in building any of those decks (other than Crag Hack I guess). Also it turns out that they updated the servers without releasing a new version of the IOs app, so that's why I can't play... GG Ubi. Edit: Looks like the App store finally got the update, messing around the campaigns. The new interface is pretty slick, I wonder if incomplete daily quests will disappear? Or can I go back and finish them the next day?

I played for a about a week, the quest log needs some work though... getting stuck behind 'win 3 games with friends' and 'win a swiss' is silly. But while I had quests I could complete it was pretty fun to have some direction when I logged in. I mostly played Open format though since I didn't feel like learning a new meta / set of cards for Standard. Although, I did notice that they gave me a new Sanctuary BS 2 starter deck when I logged in, so I guess I can go from there (I used to play Acamas / Yukiko the most anyways). In typical DoC fashion this wasn't mentioned anywhere, I just noticed I had a new premade deck and magically had cards with the BS2 logo on them. Now if I could only pull myself away from Infinity Wars, I might give DoC a second chance (still have 2500 seals to spend even).

I haven't played in quite awhile, since before 5 towers but I've checked out the new stuff. I've been logging on to get my Daily log in, and I've played several of the weekly format swiss tournaments but that's about it. There are lots of solid DCG's to pick from and while the MMDoc has great mechanics, the new economy is even worse than the old one, and I don't think updating the game to a new 'standard" format did much for it. I like the idea behind the weekly formats and I made a commons only deck for this week, and I like how it rotates after a week before it gets boring. Worst part is, the new patch broke the game on my Ipad, which is where I would normally play ladder, so not planning on doing any "laddering" or jackpot.(I only play swiss tournaments on the computer because of crashes)

They made the economy model a little better in this expansion, but it's still bad for new players. It's just hard for them to play in open format without spending lots of money. It's a shame too, because if the economy model were better, this would be unequivocally the best online card game.

Personally I stopped playing after 5Towers came out, but was eager to come back with BS2/HoN to see a new Meta. Based on the steamcharts and my own observations of jackpot participation, it looks like quite a lot of people felt this way (tail off from December, small bump in April, steady tail off continues again). I don't know why other people didn't stick around after HoN, but for me, I didn't like how they kept switching Jackpot / Swiss to open format. IE - the exact meta I was sick of (but now sprinkled with HoN stuff). So I dunno, it's hard to get back into the game there's so little consistency with what I'm supposed to be playing. For example, go through the campaign, get legacy packs, that just doesn't make any sense if the point of set rotation is to promote Standard. *And then* the econ changes come and kick me in the butt since it's hard to grind cards for HoN to actually play Standard even when it's offered in the tournaments... But, I do have 1500 seals and will be opening a box of Griffin's Bane since at one time I really did like this game. And the new achievements will let me get a bunch of BS2 starters to hopefully fill in my collection. So I'm willing to give it a try. Of course, then I gotta pray to the machine spirit that the game won't randomly crash / dc on me ;-).

You cant build decks as easy unless u want to spend shit ton of money so how exactly is this game better? You can buy all cards of standart format with gold which is currently Bs2 , hon expansion and griffin bane expansion ( this obe will be available in gold in 2 weeks) so you can play the main format of the game (played by most players, used in road 2 paris Format) without having to spend money. While there are flaws in tje current economic model? It isnt nearly as bad as u described and as i said im confident they will improve it again ( they already increased swiss prices and lowerd some wildcard prices with newest Patch).

The designers are clearly trying to help the new players along. Now you get free starter packs for each faction the first time you win a duel against another faction other than your initial starter choice. This came after I started playing so at first I was a bit bummed out because I spent wild cards to get Seria and Hakeem in my collection, now the noobies get all the starter heroes so easily. It's good for the game I guess in the long run though. With the standard format now having two expansions and the large base set 2 I find the meta at my play level, low champion I in ranked, to be quite fun and varied. There is only one aggravating stall deck in standard format now, but I can cope with it since I spent the wild cards so I can build it myself. Yesterday was my first second finisher in a swiss tournament, fielded a very rushy Kat and just demolished the first two games, third one started out rather bad for me and couldn't catch up.

I actually got a box when Griffin Bane came out, started doing campaigns for more gold and played a few times on ladder. So here's a mini-review: Pros * For the most part gives Haven and Sanctuary very strong options to not be absolutely sucky anymore * Set has a few instant impact cards so buying a few packs will probably get you something to use * Stacks look like a viable style of play, hopefully will mix up the meta some * Campaign changes and ability to get starter packs from achievements makes the game much friendlier for new and returning players Cons * I just don't trust DoC's balance team, Empowered Spell seriously might ruin the meta# * iPad client still doesn't work very well * Game network is still unstable (might be better on PC) * Still pretty grindy after you exhaust the Campaign gold (but in fairness that'll last you a very long time) * Quest design still sucks, 2k gold for using hero power 15 times (and drawing a card doesn't count) is wtf, especially since this is only 10% of the cost of a GB pack! So it's a shame that the expansion itself is great (aside from Empowered Spell), it's just consistent infrastructure problems and player experience design that make the game 'unfun'. But I'm not done with the campaigns yet and I love opening packs so I'll keep at it... # I could write a lot about this point, but I'll just say look at BS1's meta of extreme control and extreme rush with no midrange or combo decks (unless they had extreme control elements) at the top level. BS2 fixed some of it, but they left in Clear Casting without a nerf (seriously unlimited spells for 0 mana is a good idea huh?), so that doesn't inspire much confidence in me. But we'll see what if anything happens with ES (I could be over-reacting too).

Way back I think they showed qualifiers for Road to Paris or something and I think those were great. Have they made changes to how Swiss and Jackpot works? It'd be cool if they offered bigger tourneys with their in-game-client, I feel like they have the infrastructure in place already. Almost forgot about responding here, things have been crazy for me lately. In short, like most things the tournament system has a lot of potential since you can make custom swisses, they have an actual spectator mode (and have always had an unadvertised replay system), daily swisses and jackpots gets people to try out competitive play pretty often too. They've actually expanded Road to Paris, giving out rewards to get more people to participate, but those balance issues! A few patches ago there was a card that let you do direct damage to the hero under specific situations, but it was bugged and worked in easier to initiate situations as well.... they decided to say please don't use the card, but it's not banned if you do use it. Funny, but hardly a game breaker as an eSport. Unfortunately this is: they just had a Road 2 Paris qualifiers final where "we could see almost every playerd who was starting 2nd, wining his games". That's an actual quote from one of their fansites. And this isn't an isolated case either. It's literally been known for *years* that the 2nd turn advantage is huge. Most people easily have a +20% win-rate when going second based on the many threads that constantly surface when someone goes through their replays to discover just how big an advantage going second it. So basically, you can't take this game seriously with such a giant imbalance unless they start doing tournaments like chess (but even in Chess the first/second imbalance isn't that big and they have the concept of draws).

A new expansion has been announced for sometime in October and there's a 1 week pre-release promotion for free packs starting soon: https://www.duelofchampions.com/en/news/week-of-enrolment Looks like a lot of playing... but can't argue with 3 free packs. Also for those following my gripes about the game, a few have been addressed too: * Empowered Spell was nerfed a while ago because it really was destroying the meta * They've announced a fix for the 2nd turn advantage. Jury is out if it'll actually work though, but that's to be expected with a big change like this * They're finally nerfing Chain Casting, which probably won't change win-rates much but IMO is more for 'fun-factor'. * Yet another quest / economy / shop revamp. Jury's also out on this. To me it looks like they're trying to be closer to Hearthstone's crafting model which I feel is better, but we shall see. Anyways, full announcement here: https://www.duelofchampions.com/en/news/dev-diary-sins-of-betrayal
