I'm looking for the title of an old game. I remember playing it when I was young, so I guess before 1997 feels like a good bet. Could probably be much earlier too. I cannot remember much details, so I might not be able to find it after all. But still there's no harm asking :D
1) It's a PC game. I doubt PCs at that time could emulate consoles like SNES Genesis etc, so I'm fairly certain it's for the PC. I'm not too sure if it's a DOS game, but I think its quite likely though.
2) I recall the game itself having a small overworld (not the big ones like in standard RPG games). Each level/stage/place in the overworld is accessed by walking a direct road/path. At the start, you are forced to go to certain levels/stages/places (whatever you call it) because some roads/paths are locked by a gate.
3) I think each level/stage/place is a 2D platform game. I'm not even too sure what the objective is. I think its mainly to get keys to open up the gate in the overworld to access other levels/stages/places in the overworld. At least that's for the start of the game, since I never really advanced much because I was young and noob.
4) As with most platform games, there should be enemies. I cannot recall how they were dealt with however.
My memories of this game is very shitty, so I'm not hoping much. But I should be able to recognise the game if there are pictures/videos of the early portions of it. Or the overworld :D
Thanks all!
[Edit] 5) The keys may or may not be coloured, which allow you to open the corresponding gate.
6) I think the setting is somewhat medieval.
[Edit] 7) The overworld part is accessible early on (probably at the start?). Its where you choose which stage/level/place you want to play through first.

Sounds a bit like the Commander Keen series, although your description is very vague.
1. PC only 2. RPGesque overworld, although it is more of a central hub. 3. One of the best 2D platformer series on the PC. 4. Quite a few enemies that you shoot with your gun, or preferably avoid.

Umm I don't think it is commander keen. The graphics wasn't cartoonish if I recall correctly. Thanks!
I just thought of new pointers.

I played a game called Arctic Adventure on DOS as a kid that doesn't contradict any of those requirements. There are probably many games that match your description, though.

Not this game. Well I understand that my description is rather vague and common. I'm not very optimistic anyway. But there's always the glimmer of hope :D

By this description it might be Zeliard.

Some questions:
Do you know what year the game was released? (This is by far the most helpful fact when hunting old non console games) If you don't know when it was released, can you think of other games you played at the same time? weather or not you bought the game or got it as a demo or pirated? (Anything that helps nailing down when the game came out even things that was topical at the time.. music or tv/film wise)
Can you be more specific about the Overworld portion of the game? is it 3D or 2D? is it akin to a Mario level select screen such as Super Mario World?

Thought about it some more and the fact that your talking about colored keys reminded me of Chip's Challenge but thats a pre' Doom PC game (so before 1992) but it was a quite common game to see on Windows 95 systems as Microsoft them self owns the PC port of the game.

This doesn't help I know but I'm pretty sure SNES and Genesis emulators existed back then. I also recall trying a playstation emulator around that time though I was mostly concerned with NES emulation myself. Game doesn't ring a bell unfortunately but if you do remember playing emulators it could be a number of platforms.

I very highly doubt that PS1 emulation was advanced enough to play commercialy sold games in 1997 considering that both Bleem & the Mac PS1 emulator was released in 1999 (and both closed down instantly by buyout from Microsoft) there' was one emulator possible of PS1 emulation in 1998 but the code was too crude to run at any acceptable framerate unless you had the absolute top of the line PC's available at the time.

Yes well I said around that time - the op wasn't sure about the Year anyway and yes my PC was top notch.
