Its quite a bit different from Dresden files and a lot of people who like Dresden Files don't like it that I know. That said, if you read most of the major modern fantasy it is pretty ok imo, somewhere around the middle of the pack. However, if you haven't read much, most of the other big titles are quite a bit better.
To be a bit more specific, it is not (doesn't try) nearly as "clever", "funny", or "witty" as Dresden Files and the characters are much much weaker. Story is pretty decent. All just my opinion of course.

Is Codex Alera the "swords and sandals" series Butcher decided to do after the Dresden Files became a success?

I read the Codex Alera a few years ago and enjoyed it. I agree with the comment above that the characters are quite weak - I can hardly remember any of them apart from the main character, and even my memories of him are dim. However, what jumps to my mind when I think about this series are the enemies faced in the the later parts of the series. They rank among the scariest motherfuckers ever.
Other recommendation: Nine Princes in Amber, by Zelazny. If you liked Dresden, you should like this one too. It's my all-time favorite series.

i really enjoyed the books ! sure its not the same as the dresden files (which was kinda obvious, cause i think they are fucking awesome) but im very glad that i read codex alera
its 6 books, set in a world which is like the ancient rome, fighting against each other and other "nations" (which are not human), mixed with some sorcery as mentioned by you guys its not on a level with what i consider top fantasy (song of ice and fire, first law, dresden files) but its definately better than a lot of the rest
gonna start sword of truth now, i heard that at least the first few books are pretty cool, then im gonna read some of the recomendations of you guys !
oh and if u read it (if not im gonna pm, but i figured if some1 else is reading this and is also interested) @atreides: what would you consider top fantasy that i havent read yet? @cosmicspiral, freelander, matoo : what is kraken and the anubis gates, broken empire, nine princes in amber about?
i know i could google that, but ive been on tl for well over 10 years and i really prefer your opinions cheers
