Man overboard! Wait a minute...
US man held after attempt to 'swim to N Korea'South Korean authorities say they have detained an American man they believe was trying to swim to North Korea. Guards arrested the man, in his late 20s or early 30s, on Tuesday at a river border near the demilitarised zone. Border patrol troops found the American lying on the southern shore of the Han River, a government source told South Korea's Yonhap news agency. Yonhap said he told investigators he wanted to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. ..... Source

lol'd
Is September usually the month when the idiots start crawling out of the woodwork?
|
meh, who wouldn't want to sacrifice everything to have the supreme chance to meet the glorious leader ?
|
I apologize on behalf of my idiotic countrymen. Then again, I really shouldn't. Never cared much for darwin award winners. Maybe if they did their fucking research on the labor camps, people wouldn't be so eager to rush there.
|
Yeah, trying to swim into NK to meet Kim Jong-un is definitively worth a Darwin Award. There are some stupid things people do that i can understand. And then there is trying to break into NK.
|
So why are there rumors and reports that Kim is dead after not being seen in 3 weeks? Is that odd especially when it comes to North Korean politics?
|
Cause he really hasn't been seen in a long time and the NK news (which is government controlled) is reporting him missing apparently.
My guess is he's either been assassinated, left the country or somehow died accidentally and they are trying to figure out how to tell the public and not let things fall into chaos.
|
Everything I've read seems to suggest that he has fallen ill, especially given his weight and limp at his last sighting.

Stuff like this.
Pearson was able to find a glimmer of official information in a new documentary about Kim shown on North Korean state television: "The wealth and prosperity of our socialism is thanks to the painstaking efforts of our marshal, who keeps lighting the path for the people, like the flicker of a flame, despite suffering discomfort," the voiceover states over footage of Kim walking with a limp.

"I understand that he is suffering from gout along with hyperuricemia, hyperlipidemia, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.[...]Another source familiar with the communist country claimed that North Korean doctors recently made secret visits to Germany, Switzerland and other European countries to find ways to treat Kim.
As Kim's health deteriorated, however, there is speculation that European doctors may have later made trips to the North as well."

Pork Chop's obviously had one too many Hennessys for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
No doubt some of the government's elites will be taking advantage of his absence though.
|
One can wish that Kim was the only guy keeping North Korea communistic and down, but the sad reality is there's much of the political and military bloc that are more hardline than him.

North Korea Ready to Start Nuclear TalksGENEVA — A senior North Korean envoy said Thursday that his country was ready to resume six-party talks on its nuclear program, but must maintain its readiness in the face of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. In an interview, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, So Se-pyong, also said that his country was not planning a nuclear test and that reports that its leader, Kim Jong-un, was ill were “fabricated rumors.” The negotiations over North Korea’s nuclear program have stalled, but in Geneva, Mr. So said, “We are ready,” adding, “I think China and Russia and the D.P.R.K. are ready,” referring to his country, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. He continued: “But America, they don’t like that kind of talks right now. Because America does not like that, so that’s why the countries like South Korea, Japan also are not ready for those talks.” ..... In light of American and South Korean military exercises, Mr. So said, “We have to be alert; also, we have to be prepared to make countermeasures.” Asked whether North Korea was preparing a nuclear test or to fire a missile, he replied, “No, no.” Mr. So said that denuclearization “is the party’s policy.” Questions about Mr. Kim’s health were prompted by his failure to appear in public for weeks, and then by a video that showed him limping. But Mr. So denied that Mr. Kim had had surgery on his ankles, and asked about the nature of his ailment, Mr. So said, “That is rumors, fabricated rumors.” Mr. So said it was not clear that the United States was willing to negotiate the release of three Americans held by North Korea. “I was told that they asked for the government of America to have negotiations on those problems,” Mr. So said, “but I don’t know whether America is ready or not to release them, or have some understandings or the recognition of those crimes they made.” Source
North Korea 'not planning any missile or nuclear tests'North Korea is not planning any missile or nuclear tests, the country's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, So Se Pyong, has told Reuters news agency. Mr So was also quoted as saying that North Korea was ready to resume six-party talks on its nuclear programme. North Korea has been conducting missile and nuclear tests since the negotiations broke down in 2008. The envoy also dismissed as "fabricated rumours" recent reports that North Korean leader Kim Jon-un is unwell. ..... "For the six-party talks we are ready," Mr So told Reuters, adding that Russia and China were also prepared. ..... Source Interesting how this comes at the same time Kim's called in a sickie...someone up top sure is pulling the strings around to shift the rhetoric in a different direction.

it would be a turn for the better if some Chinese sponsored coup finally wrapped it up this cult of personality and put North Korea on China's reform path

lol at the thread title change because I was going to do the same thing
North Korea actually being somewhat agreeable is very surprising

Hasn't this happened in the past? NK suddenly seems kind of nice and reasonable for a bit, and then two weeks later they threaten to annihilate the entire world again with their imaginary bombs.

Well, atm there isn't a glorious leader to push the hard line. Regime change will take decades, but it's a start.
