I can completely understand getting sick of how increadibly overwhelming this buzz has gotten, and to be fair, the discussions about it have been mostly pointless and uneducated, but still, it's just one thread and I don't feel it was doing any harm. Also the story is still a bit fascinating to me so I'm not 100% objective.

If that's all you can take away from this dress phenomena that says more about you than it does the phenomena. I said in the thread that this might be the biggest thing to happen this year or maybe the next 10. I don't just mean it's viral nature, but the underlying description of society it paints. There isn't going to be a simpler issue that we face as a species, yet all the same problems we have with something more complex like Climate change or gay marriage is on spectacular display here. Except instead of with climate change or gay marriage the dress is an easily proven fact with little room for interpretation. Yet even in the short thread here, people have ranged from the typical anger, apathy, and frustration to conspiracy and contempt to understanding and expository Everyone should take a deep look at how they reacted to this story and think about how it reflects on their behavior regarding other new/controversial/viral pieces of information.

I think it's interesting scientifically but that's not why it's appearing everywhere on social media.

That people lose perspective too easily?

Regarding how people reacted to this story and how they generally react to new/controversial/opposing information. EXAMPLES: Did they see what they saw/see and conclude 'it is what I see' other peoples explanations and perceptions be damned ("They must be trolling, color blind, settings screwy, defective, etc...) Did they see a dress/optical illusion easily explained and immediately say/think "this is stupid I'm not even going to think about this thing Please make it go away there is nothing to be learned here!" or "Here's the science stupids now go back to your day"? Did they see both and try to mediate heated arguments about whether someone's brain/monitor/eyes were defective or convince someone else that they weren't trolling when they said they can only see white and gold or blue and black or orange. So yeah, perspective is certainly part of it. For me a significant part of the story is whether or not people realize how their reaction to the dress could reflect other opinions on let's say climate change, gay marriage, or many others. Maybe people could realize that our brain doesn't just trick us with things like light (which alone, is still too complicated for many people involved [refusing to accept the scientific explanations]). Our brain also tricks us regarding more complicated thoughts. If you know you saw a white and gold dress, and then after telling a bunch of people they were wrong and they must be screwy for seeing anything else, the same picture turned blue and black, you should go and apologize to a lot of people. Not just the ones you ripped for the dress, but just a lot of people in your life because it's not the first time you have done it. You have probably been sure you were right (saw what you saw) but you just weren't right. Maybe you weren't entirely wrong, but reality simply wasn't what you asserted. If you did the same thing in reverse, just because you actually were 'right' about the 'real' color of the dress doesn't mean that people didn't see what they say they saw. If both types of people were a lot more understanding of how that doesn't just happen with lights and dresses, but with all sorts of things our brains do, we might live in a much better world. Edit: I'm using the generic 'you' btw I don't mean specifically YOU! haha.

It's an rss feed with comments.

Yea, the psychology of it all is what is the interesting part. And that is why I posted it here as opposed to the mindless idiots on facebook or whatever.
