I can't believe I haven't seen this until now. SC2 units in BW + Show Spoiler +
Does anyone have any experience in playing these mods? I am hesitant to try due to viruses and such. Apparently there are a whole slew of them. Some look like complete revamps with new races.
Why would someone do this? Sc1 units look better than sc2 units, especially terran. It would be better if someone fix sc2 terran and make it more "metal" like bw, and less lego look.
Burning Ground Infantry units being used on Python:
They seem to shoot a little bit slower like dragoons which is a good thing normally for micro. And theres an ability that creates 2 little medibots that heal nearby units and can tank shots it seems.
I quite like the medium large mech unit called the Sledge Destroyer (obviously he doesnt like people going sledging), just in terms of looking kind of cool. And the Hammer Securities unit too. I worry that it is like the Marauder in sc2 though which Ive heard is a unit that causes gameplay problems. And I worry about the inclusion of warp gate mechanic which Ive heard rumours about as well. By the way it looks like it has automine (which again Ive heard might be a problem for some people). Theres a picture in the moddb album that shows 24 units selected at once but is this in the game? Im not sure. + Show Spoiler +
But anyway, some of the units are 'cool' just from a being new and different to us brood war players point of view. Its not just some sc2 terran units that have been added. Its a whole bunch of new units. Seems to be 3 'terran' factions with unique units etc, so its a 'total conversion mod' as they call them. Some of attention to detail looks great. Animations and firing particle effects, shooting soud effects, feels nice and 'crunchy' lol. Units look like they can be microed and retreat if desired etc.
The art style looks a bit weird at times on some of the maps, but stick with it, I watched a few games and by the end it grew on me a bit. Watch in HD. Is this a signal of what brood war hd might resemble? See the Sledge Destroyer in this game (slightly more skillful and evenly matched players too) (its the mech unit leading the charge here):
I think the Oppressor tank is lategame only, costs 2000 gas and you can only have 1 of them, and seems pretty easy to kill so its not a problem, so dont worry about that. Overall Im very impressed just from watching these videos. I havent played the mod. Looks like there might be some good gameplay design in there atleast on paper, plus some sc2 units (which is impressive from a technical standpoint at the very least). I sometimes wonder why people like this dont just make their own game from scratch instead of modding, particularly such a difficult game to mod.
Im definitely tempted to give it a try, has anyone played it before? Is it easy to install etc?
I have no real idea if the units are actually balanced though (even on a theoretical gameplay design level). For all I know the infantry units become obsolete and you have to make factory units etc after a certain point. Though to be fair that is exactly how TvT works in brood war to an extreme level. But it might be worse than that, it could be that units dont have strengths and weaknesses etc, or they are bland, or any number of other things. The technical quality on show is undeniable though, so that inspires confidence.
