To summarzie the discussion: Yes, some people in this thread would argue that the moment you use your mouse software to set one of these sidebuttons to «1», for example, you are a cheater. So maybe it is best if you get rid of your fancy sidebutton mouse and get a simple two button mouse. Just to be on the safe side. Maybe wait until after Blizzard has implemented custom hotkeys, though.
could i get some more opinions on this because I don't want to get super used to my mouse with side buttons if I won't be able to use it.

Afaik few people are against custom hotkeys. I can definitely accept it.
What bothers me to no end are the people who scream "OMFG NO CUSTOM HOTKEYS? FUCK THIS GAME ITS UNPLAYABLE". Dude, if you think like this you fall in one of two following categories: (1) you are too lazy to learn the hotkeys; or (2) you simply suck.
You are not entitled to have custom hotkeys.
Besides the original ones are fine. I don't see the need to customize it, but if eventually Blizzard does it, its ok. There is also no need to segregate tours into custom and original hotkeys, that would be retarded imho.
It is amusing how so many people lack common sense...

A couple times. I was able to join a good 80-90% of games last night, but there were a few were it hung for a few seconds like the old ICCup latency hang, and then told me I was unable to join.

you can use whatever you want
this cheating discussion is asinine
this is the problem i'm having. half the people are telling me it's totally fine and the other half are telling me it's cheating. i'm using the mouse exactly as intended so how is it cheating?

From the comfort of your home you can do basically whatever you want in regards to stuff like this. I suppose you could put a macro that created a round of workers on your mouse if you wanted to. Asking whether or not something would be considered cheating is different from asking if something is possible.
You can't use mice with additional buttons, seems pretty obvious to me. Do you think it would be allowed in a tournament? If not, it's considered an unfair advantage or cheating.

We could have a guy that is partially handicapped in his left arm but compared to others with his condition he is a God at Starcraft.
Thus, he does not "simply suck" unless you compare him to people who are physically fit. Do B- players "suck"? Compared to Flash maybe, compared to others definitely no.
Second, he may be the most hardest working person on the planet relative to his functional abilities, so he is not "too lazy".
Therefore, he doesn't fall into one of the two categories presented: 1) too lazy to learn, 2) simply suck.

It's fine. Nobody can supervise you how you control a PC game. You can play Starcraft with the Xbox Controller if you want to (as long as you don't start doing macros).
It's an open platform - we should be proud of it. There's no committee that forces everyone to play with IntelliMouse 1.1s and IBM Model Ms in order level the playing field.
1) You can learn and want to. 2) You can learn but don't want to. 2) You can learn and you are undecided. 3) You can't learn.
What other options are there?
His comment was inflammatory, sure. But not a false dichotomy. If you don't want to put in the time to learn a new gameplay mechanic then that is a combination of how much effort you are willing to put in (ie how 'lazy' you are) and how skilled you are in picking up this new gameplay mechanic (ie: how much you 'suck').
Say you want to learn Flash level ability and you fail at that. Then either your maximum theoretical level is below Flash' level, or you didn't put in enough work to reach your maximum skill plateau, when it does lie above the current level of Flash.
Not sure why one would call this a 'false dichotomy'. Where is your third option?
Uh what? I just detailed it. Some people might be handicapped in a way that only half the keyboard is accessible and going to the other side is very uncomfortable or maybe impossible within reasonable time frames.

Handicapped -> You can't learn Very uncomfortable or maybe impossible within reasonable time frames - > You can learn but don't want to.
Either you can or you can't learn something. Either the amount of time you put in is reasonable, or not reasonable. What is the third option?
I think it is cheating if you remove the "f1" key on your keyboard. Makes the game easier to play, i would ban every single player who does this, probably for a lifetime
