This number has popped up a lot and I got interested in trying to find out whether this is a realistic number. Lucky me, the challonge brackets display participant numbers for each tourney they host so there were some numbers to get started with. I summed the number of participants for each "tourney" from http://challonge.com/asl_s4_seoul_01 to http://challonge.com/asl_s4_seoul_12 and the total is: 280. Maybe 1100+ people attend in total for all 3 events but then that would still mean a lot more unique new applicants have to show up in both cities that are smaller than Seoul. (As we can only count players who attend the Seoul and Daegu events twice if we are interested in total attendance numbers not when looking for number of unique participants.) If we want to count attendance in order to get the number 1100+ we would need to accept a no-show percentage of about 20-25%. (I got this number by assuming both Daegu and Busan attract the same amount of participants which would make the total sit at 780 which is about 275 participants from our base number). Maybe that is realistic with the overlaps between sets of players that travel to 2 events out of the 3. I don't know. I'm not trying to counter or demean your comment but it's an interesting question to think about and I couldn't help myself thinking out loud. Does this all sound reasonable or am I making some very stupid base assumptions that end up skewing my numbers? Is there some other source to get some numbers from besides the starleague.kr landing page?

Anybody can sign up for anything if it's online, but actually going there, investing time in person traveling, using time and money (although probably not a lot), to compete against former pros and amateur pros is another thing.

I remember that due to walkovers, some players moved on to the semifinals without even playing one game.
