UPDATE: We're under way and close to 700 participants overall as of now. I still need around 40~ more entries from TeamLiquid to catch up with the communities on Reddit!
Hey TL! For my thesis in Media Literacy I want to find out what conduct and attitudes the Starcraft community has towards controversial topics like Cheating, Match-fixing, Conflicts of Interest and Gambling, as well as to gain insight into how the behavior, activeness and passiveness of your community has changed or would change as a result of controversies and scandals in esports.
If you are familiar with these topics and want to help out, I'd be happy if you could answer my questions. The platform is mobile-friendly, data is anonymous and questions you are not comfortable with can be skipped. You can leave out topics that you don't recognize to save time as well. The survey takes 5 to 10 minutes to fill out, depending on how much you choose to skip.
The fun part is that I will be asking major esports communities on Reddit and compare the results of each subreddit. r/GlobalOffensive, r/Starcraft, r/DotA2, r/Overwatch and r/Hearthstone will be joining! TeamLiquid.net is the only "outsider", but all the more valuable as a source for comparing results. After the thesis is done, significant general results and specific results for your community will be shared here.
Thank you for your help! Just holler if you have questions. Some of you already helped testing this, so special SO to you

Check out savior match fixing in broodwar. (Several other pros were involved.
That whole incident sent out waves that hurt the scene for years. Even to this day.
I'm generally a guy who believes in second chances. But I'm zero tolerance for match fixing.

Oh yeah I heard about that one, but never delved more into it as it happened so long ago. Knowing that match-fixing in Korea is such serious business with harsh consequences, I was even more surprised to see it happen in the recent years with the whole 2015 scandal. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into the whole savior thing.
By the way, if you guys are familiar with the savior event you are welcome to use that as your point of view in the survey as well.

Essentially killed the scene is a better way to put it

Yeah.. don't ignore that one. It's incredibly significant.

There are some that say any drama is good drama. But matchfixing in StarCraft has shown that this is most certainly not the case.
SaviOr and the 2010 matchfixing scandal has had far reaching effects on StarCraft and korean esports that is still being felt today.

Chill! Like I stated in the OP, I started dealing with all the controversial stuff that has happened as a result of the controversies in 2015/2016 onwards. There is a lot of stuff (not just match-fixing, and not just Starcraft) to cover and for me, the SC2 related scandals were a lot more present since I was actively watching it at the time (and it was the first esport I ever watched), but I had no connection to BW whatsoever. Based on your reactions I should definitely start off my chapter on match-fixing with the savior incident and it's effects, so thank you for the recommendation. I was not trying to be disrespectful or anything.

+1 for "Look into the 2010 matchfixing scandal involving Savior." I'm also of the opinion that that specific incident was the largest contributing factor to the decline/"death" of that era of Korean BW. Just finished the survey btw

Thank you! Well it is safe to say that I'll take your advice.

This is a surprisingly well done survey. Maybe some questions were redundant and it could have been trimmed down, but in general it was much better than most "surveys" you see, because it really allowed me to express my opinions even if they have an unusual structure, that is it did not force me to group together opinions that people generally see as "naturally belonging together". Also the ability to skip things you don't care about is pretty good.
I am glad to have been able to put the one point of "doesn't care much about matchfixing" into your data that will be probably mostly dominated by people that would imprison Life for .... well, life

i'm surprised by how many assume people are honest. scandals are as common as a rainy day. SC2 is nothing special in that regard. Check out Declan Hill's "The Fix".

Brood War was already in decline because of its age and SC2. That doesn't mean BW isn't a good game though. Savior only accelerated the process.

High praise, thank you very much! I am glad that some people like the exorbitant approach of this survey, even though it becomes a bit cumbersome as a result. As you pointed out, my goal was to provide precise questions to get precise answers, rather than mashing multiple questions/opinions together and call it a day. From what I can see right now, there are loads of differences in opinions, and it was definitely the right call to allow all kinds of opinions. After all the point is to find out just how many people care and don't care, or how many people act/would act and wouldn't.

Part of me thinks that esports in general has become a phenomenon where fans want to have fun, enjoy themselves, play, compete, and try to leave behind all the "bad stuff" that plagues the real world. But as you said, esports and SC2 are not special in that regard, so it's all the more important to look behind the scenes to recognize and highlight abuse - because on certain occasions the public outcry of the "scene" has already brought the wind of change, such as the lawsuits and public exposure from the TmarTn case, or the latest Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot crate disaster.

i like to play baseball in RL. same thing there. we know the best players are on HGH and that MLB has hidden corruption at many levels. but the game itself is still fun to play. and watching MLB can still be a lot of fun as long as you know going in you are watching something that is part-show//part competition and not a "pure competition"

Hi guys! Quick update: Thank you to all that have contributed so far. We're closing in on 700 participants overall. I would like to gain around 40 more participants from TeamLiquid to catch up with the numbers from Reddit!
