Seriously. This is a MUST buy if you like any kind of turned based strategy. I haven't had this much fun with a TBS since the original XCOM or Laser Squad Nemesis.
You can min/max/tweak to your heart's desire. There are 4 different modes to play in multiplayer. Light Lances, Medium Lances, Heavy/Assault Lances and then UNLIMITED which means you can do fun things like 4 Assault mechs loaded for bear.
This is the first game in years that makes me forget the hours. It's fucking 3:30am. I have work in 3 hours. What the fuck am I doing up this late.
Single Player has great storytelling surprisingly and the multiplayer is great, you fight against so many different players/play styles that I'm constantly tweaking my own custom lances when I see a cool combo.
It's like the tabletop game minus having to paint all the shit.
For real 8.5/10 from me. There are still some bugs to work out and connection issues in multiplayer but this is a solid game.
I'm known as "SABIN" if you see me in multiplayer but feel free to add me on steam - sabinblitz or psyonicreaver - look for the SC2 Reaver portrait.

Meh, graphics are way too off-putting, as usual with these kinda Unity games. Front Mission is better in that regard and I still have only played the first game of that series.
|
Its a super great game, backed the kickstarter back then I want to finish the SP before I try out the MP though, still have to figure out everything (its a bit different to the tabletop)
|
I can also recommend it. It is a very fun game, and a bit more complex than it seems from videos which is very good. Only problem is that it only has one difficulty setting and start of the game is pretty easy for a Xcom vet like me.

Best IP ever. (Except StarCraft)

I am glad a proper battletech game is on PC. Having played the cumbersome tabletop game in my teenage years, it was always a game that wanted to make a simulation better suited a PC than pen and paper. We will never get to the top tier battletech where you eject your own filled ammo arm, pick it up and use it as a melee weapon(the mech designer has some exploits), but this game is a lot of fun.
|
It could use some polish with the engine as it has some pretty narly freezes/ time wastes but otherwise I'm very happy with it.
|
They're still working out some bugs. There is supposed to be a patch soon.
Anybody play multiplayer? I'm finding that more and more people are playing but holy crap I'd say 95% of my matches are absolute pub stomps.
I played against a few beta backers but I haven't lost yet. I need some StarCraft players to go against drop me a line guys and help me tweak my custom lances.
|
Played Battletech for years with friends around a table. After my experience with their Shadowrun games, I will give this a few months to iron out the first wave of bugs, but will certainly buy it.

this game is getting absolutely panned on gog reviews though
some of it is the expected 'NOT COMPLETELY DRM FREE GRRRR 0/100' stuff but there's a lot of other complaints coming up as well

Also, in what might be a first. You will not get your pre-order reward (skins) unless you create an account on the Paradox website.
If you want to use the Shadowhawk and the Atlas skins, you cannot do it offline. You must be connected and logged to a Paradox account. As soon as you log out from the account, both variants are deleted from your game. Seems pretty reasonable that they call them out for that. It's extremely shitty practice, especially because it's a Kickstarter game (which is naturally build on trust).
|
Eh It allows for easy integration with multiplayer and I've never gotten an unsolicited email from paradox. Its a pretty petty argument to call it DRM. All you need is an email and a password and I already had an account anyway.
I'm really enjoying it. The cinematics are top ten for non AAA games and the story is relatively simple but enough for the game. Its a really good starting point if you want to make a modern franchise out of battletech. The skins are actualy pretty sweet for something I got for an extra negative 10% of the games price.

The game is really good but it has some real performance issues and looks pretty bad. If you like turn based strategy --> buy!
|
Performance issues are real, I got a i7-7700k, 1080ti, game is on an SSD and load times are bad, I had a story mission yesterday where the game was giving me a solid 18 fps >_>
there's also big frame freezes whenever a target takes lethal damage, like the game is trying to catch up to something in that moment, what that is I dunno.
Some annoying bugs too, like low spirits tag doesn't get removed from your pilots that you can get from random events on the ship. Reinforcement units being on the map turn 1, which pretty much turns every mission into "run away from the objective and find the extra enemies first, otherwise be prepared to fight a simultaneous 4v8".
|
Ah yeah, that "reinforcement-bug" is stupid... Well some missions get really fun/difficult and some basically impossible due to it (only had that happen once... 4 heavy brawlers/skirmishers + 3-4 reinforcement LLM-Mechs spawning far behind the Heavies before i have even downed one of them - I got mauled by constant Rocket showers and didn't even see what kind of Mechs are firing at me)...
|
Yeah, I’m going to wait until the bugs are ironed out. I don’t feel like messing around with optimization just to make a game like this run well.
|
Looking at the system requirements for this game bottleneck seems to be RAM. 16GB as recomended compared to GTX670 recomended graphic card. This looks like some lousy programming with a whole lot objects held needlesly in memory.
As to the bugs it seems like waiting a month or two for patches is sound policy not only in regards to Paradox made games but also Paradox published games.
|
Yeah, this might be the game that finally makes me install a 64 bit version of windows and upgrade. I’ve resisted for so long because I really sure get a new hard drive while I am at it. Well two hard drives, one for the OS and the other for games and then my SSD for with LOAD TIMES... This is why I play games on PS4, so I don’t have feed this dark need to optimize my PC.
|
As I said, if your desperate for a new round based game, go for it. The gameplay/mechanics are awesome despite some balance issues regarding weapons.
If not, wait for a patch or fanmod (it seems easy to mod from what i gather) BUT make sure you get it .
My main gripe is that it looks pretty bad and still runs worse than any other game i ever installed on my rig (which was pretty top notch a year ago). Especially the load times... There are less than 50i destroyable/interactable units in most missions yet it loads and loads... Also combat has loads of downtime (more that the new Xcoms with all animations on even if you turn them down).
Gameplay is great, techside is horrible.

I love Battletech and I enjoyed both the MechWarrior and MechCommander series, but I would not recommend this game to a friend. If it was not a Battletech game, I would have refunded it on Steam for sure; as it is, I tried really hard to like it for hours and hours, but the mediocre graphics, constant waiting around (both due to loadingtimes and the way each turn takes literally AGES to process), awful UI, and just complete lack of polish made me a very regretful buyer.
It honestly feels like the game was made by people who had never played a videogame before. It's not even a 'bad' game at the core (although the combat is a little too... board-gamey at times, with many mechanics being too simplistic for my liking, and lacking some depth), but the execution and presentation is just absolutely terrible, and that's a shame.
