I'm not sure to which extent there is an interest for it or even the numbers, but it would be pretty cool to see the return of the national teams! Maybe even some World Cup-stuff going again!
I guess it could also inspire some of us lesser players to have an extra goal to reach for.
So in case anyone else have been thinking about it, maybe ya'll high levelers could use this as an excuse to make it happen?
Or are there any national teams out there already?

Would be a very happy spectator! I wonder how many good Lithuanian players are left, besides Arew

i would like to see some form of nations wars being revived but i think logistically it will be a nightmare (with timezones, latency etc).

I think with the current amout of top level players, it wouldnt be feasible to be honest. We would need to pool the countries, like we did in the last iterations, but when pooling the nations this doesn't feel like a real nation war anymore, but just another clan like war. You could argue that nations just have to deal with it and suck it up, but I ll tell you that the few top players from each country (except countries like russia, poland, usa and sweden, which still have a decent amount of players) would just stop playing the nation wars after seeing their team lose, while they win their own games.
What I would love to see, is a regular NA vs EU battle, like we saw in BSLs Continental Clash. That was funny and we should do it on a recurrent basis, like every 3 months or so. Maybe make it winner league style, which would add a lot more upset potential to it?

You need a time slot without BSL or STPL to prevent foreigner-event-fatigue. With 3 players per country minimum, you can do a classic with a twist: 3x 1v1 and 1x 2v2 + acematch, everything BO1. Acematch could be 3v3, my personal favorite, or the more standard 1v1.
There are more than enough countries with a broad top to make this work. I looked at the foreigner elo ranking and here is a table:
Max Average Count kor 1512 1141 9 bel 1404 1404 1 rus 1229 902 13 pol 1213 941 11 usa 1156 906 13 hun 1137 999 2 peru 1130 874 8 denmark 1076 1076 1 kazakhstan 1074 1074 1 france 1063 963 2 ukraine 1032 1032 1 swe 1026 941 4 fin 988 988 1 chile 978 827 7 ger 969 860 5 unknown 964 805 12 canada 955 832 7 norway 954 894 3 indonesia 932 932 1 bulgaria 873 873 1 finland 810 810 1 vietnam 778 778 1 bolivia 776 776 1 uk 740 734 3
No suprise: rus, pol, usa, peru is up there. But then there's swe, chile, ger, canada and norway. That's nine solid countries already, from that shabby table. This should be a once per year tourney, Worlcup style. 16 teams, OSL style group stage, 8 teams single elimination, no 3th/4th place (or 8 teams double elimination).

Nostalgic...
I don't think it's possible to make it really work without such internet spaces such as WGTour or at least some kind of country ranking in the ladder, in order to motivate the players around. - Blizzard even removed country channels from bnet I've had a lot of troubles trying to keep the Bulgarian SC2 team alive, when there were tons of active players in WoL and HotS. And today it's hard for me to organize an only Bulgarian SCBW tournament that gets more than 10 players (and out of these 10, only few are playing well)... And we used to be one of the top foreign countries right after Pol and Rus back in the days.

I think it's possible to do, it's just a matter of the community rallying together to support this initiative. But if everyone is saying "it's hard" or having some negativity towards it, then it won't be possible at all. And probably most important, is finding the person to actually organize it all (hard to find that more than anything, I feel)
I think whatever the format, yes, it might be hard to get it played in one day ... but it could be like how STPL is doing it. Set 1 default day and time, but players can get it done earlier on their own time.
Of course, if you sign up for something like this, you have to have the motivation and dedication to get that match played. You'd want to minimize W.Os as much as possible. It'd be great to have NWs back again ... real nostalgia.

it can be done, it has been done, it will be done.

Lets face it. The good old times will never come back. If you guys still manage to do it, that would be great. But i would not expect too much...

I would totally play for Poland.

Go Norway!! I miss the old NW-days..

From experience, you can generally revive nation wars pretty easily as long as you're willing to accept two realities:
- Low game quality, some nations don't have enough high end players (or the high end players aren't willing to participate) and when they do, they are not even guaranteed to match up against the other team's high end players. - Walk Overs, lots of them. This is generally true for any team league when teams get eliminated, they lose motivation and the quality goes down, but this typically applies mid season or earlier for Nation Wars. You can mitigate this with careful schedule planning and standing mechanics that keeps teams in the running.
As was already said above, merged countries doesn't really work, or achieve the same effect.

I would like to see it and I would like to help a bit as well, though sadly I do not have as much time as I used to!

To be fair, when we (WGT folks) did the NW competitions, we operated it out of WGT for simplicity because back then it was difficult to gather everybody on one page to make the draw, report the games/send the replays, handle the schedule etc... but nowadays with discord and TL it is completely doable, just like Qikz does with the STPL.
WOs are a potential issue like with any league but by careful planning we can get around some of it I think.
I guess I could try and get in touch with some of the old France A players, though most of them either retired or only play for fun now, but perhaps an event like that can make them comeback. Problem is I no longer live in France but it should be alright with decent planning.
Because of possible lag and time differences, it would be nice to play regional qualifiers first (esp for Europe). I think the 3 1x1 and 1 2v2 format is the best as you can handle it with 3 players, having qualifiers with a league+playoff format can be good too (as opposed to a single bracket, where some countries might only play once). Like the soccer world cup: 4 countries per group, top 2 advance. 3 matches guaranteed.
For countries who lack players there are 2 options: 1) merge countries (it has been done in the past) but I think it defeats the purpose 2) even if the players of any given country are supposedly weaker, we should still be able to find 3 and they can play anyway, the same way Panama got to the world cup. Granted they are likely to lose but it creates a sense of community for that country, and they get to meet/play top players of the opposing countries.
As for selection, our approach at WGT was to let the team leaders decide. They were themselves selected by their respective community. For example, in my case for France A, it was done both at a French LAN and online on TDFrance.org. Note that if several people want to be the team leader of a given country, they can also be coleaders, just like in clan league you have several admins. As long as they discuss things together before bringing it up to the competition admins it works well.

This sounds awesome. If teams start coming together I would be more than happy to assist with organisation and admin (I've been involved in events before)!
Sadly the UK scene is prolly a little small for a team but it would be really awesome!

This needs to happen, the question is when?

I think just starting the national teams at all can/should happen at any time, as it might be nice to just get the ball rolling. And then it'd be easier to set up a potential World Cup when things are coming more along?

I think in NWs, merged countries doesn't make sense, even though we do have lower player populations.
