Reasoning + Show Spoiler + Every live thread, at least half the first three pages are always questions about how to watch, or asking for help with a specific stream/player. I know we have old, general install threads for TVants, GOM, and Potplayer, but I thought a question/answer thread would benefit many, and reduce clutter in livecast threads if linked to in the opening post. I've spent a long time working with PotPlayer settings and still had problem, as well as noticed many other people still having problems, so I'll start with that. As questions get asked and answered, I'll update the first post to make this a kind of FAQ for anyone having trouble.
Overview
Daum PotPlayer is a Korean media player primarily used for streaming live and recorded Korean TV programs. For teamliquid.net users, it's the best way to watch anything broadcast on OGN (OSL, OSC, Proleague), as it is legal and very high quality. A basic guide to downloading and installing it (especially for those that can't read Korean) was kindly made by snowbird here.
I don't have that much knowledge at this point, but I did translate pretty much all of the settings, so any questions about what the menus say (F5), or what you can and can't change, I can probably answer. I'll post a few questions I've heard that have been answered, and then some I've seen that are yet unanswered. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong on anything, and add anything you think would help.
Q & A
Q: Is there any way to reduce the quality of the streams for slower connections?
A: As far as I know, there is no way to do this. The live broadcasts have "rooms" for watching, and each room has a set bandwidth for the broadcast. The OSL games I've watched are broadcast at 1600kbps video. All the settings for screen size appear to only change the physical size of the player without affecting the actual quality (they basically tell the player the default size to open media and streams, and where to position the player).
Q: In one of the menus, there's a slider with numbers from 1-30. Does this change the buffering time?
A: It does not. This is in the sixth tab, the Network settings (네트워크). The slider changes the amount of cache to save on your hard drive from the stream, measured in minutes. This is simply for rewinding if you wish to rewatch something without restarting the stream.
Q: Is there an English version or a way to know what the settings are in English?
A: There is no English version (that I know of), but I have translated most of the menu settings, and can provide translations on request. I'll eventually post the menus as images with English labels when I get the time, but for now will start with requests. You can create an .ini file to save the settings by checking the 11th box in the first tab of the menu (F5): INI파일에 환경 설정 저장하기 (Create .ini file for storing preferences). In this file, the setting titles are in English. It is called PotPlayer.ini, and is stored in the directory of the PotPlayer.exe application.

Q: When I try to rewind a live stream, it plays for a couple seconds then jumps to the newest data. Is there any way to make it stay behind so I can watch while it buffers?
A: If your connection does not have or is not receiving the full bandwidth of the stream, there will be gaps in what it downloads. It has to skip sections of the stream that happened during each buffer when the next one starts. You can rewind and play, but when it reaches a gap, it will skip ahead to the next downloaded section. I do not know of any way to eliminate these gaps, as each time it buffers it only downloads the newest data from the stream.
Unanswered
Q: It appears to artificially limit my bandwidth to ~750kbps (almost exactly 50% my bandwidth) for every stream. What is causing this/is there a way around this?
Q: What is the difference between the "rooms" (yellow boxes with numbers) and the other stream link (orange box with play icon)?

Daum/Gom streams have simply never worked for me. It's always near slideshow, even though my connection should be more than fast enough to handle it (5 Mbps). Daum is 1328 Kbps stream btw (including audio). I'm guessing that the limiting factor for many people could just be their connection to Korea. However, YaoYuan works fine for me so I have no idea. If anyone has any ideas about how to increase buffer length, that would be greatly appreciated.

I know you can pause the stream and it'll keep loading and when you hit play again it actually picks up where you paused (ie doesn't skip ahead)... not exactly an elegant method but it should work. This did me no good when I was watching ProLeague this morning though because for some reason the player kept disconnecting me every couple minutes but hopefully it helps with lag.

That's exactly what I did and it worked fine. I had to do only six or seven times, but then the stream appeared to find its appropriate rate and didn't need to do it any more. I had the perfect stance by watching with a nearly exactly one minute delay.

This doesn't work for everyone. This does solve most buffering issues for people who can actually connect at full bandwidth. Many people have their bandwidth artificially limited to half the actually bandwidth (or less), so the pause method won't work. For them, it skips ahead to the current time once the stream gets about a minute behind. Even if you rewind, you cannot play the parts it didn't ever download.

How do i fix this error, it occurs when i try to play any video

This is probably a really stupid question, but I can only ever find a stream for the OGN feed... and supposedly the MBC one can be reached using the Pot Player? How do I get to the MBC feed? >_>
I know where the Proleague button is, but it only leads to OGN and it doesn't seem to open up any other buttons that weren't there before...
|
Well, what I've always done when looking for streams is to click on the "on-air" bar. You'll find the stream eventually =p
|
I hadn't seen this before
nice bump

Oh... haha. Yeah, this definitely opens a new menu and has the MBC feed in it. Thanks.
