[GOM] Semifinals - free[gm] vs JangBi
January 29th, 2009 17:24 GMT
After a week-off to celebrate the Chinese New Year, GOMtv is returning this Sunday to determine which Protoss gets to play Bisu in the Finals for a chance at the $40,000 grand prize. The two players vying for the opportunity? JangBi and Free[gm]. Beyond the money incentive, both players have strong motivations to win this series: After losing to Bisu 1-3 in the 2008 Clubday MSL finals, JangBi surely wants to prove he can beat Bisu in a series, and Free[gm] no doubt has a deep desire to burst his championship-cherry. Should be a good series!
Although Jangbi is Steve's numero uno Powerranker, and Free didn't even break the top ten, this series is too tight to predict. Check it:
Neither player can be said to be in a slump. Neither player has an aura of invulnerability in regards to PvP. Both players lost to Bisu 1-3 in the 2008 ClubDay MSL. Both players' PvP are vulnerable, and their records against one another are equal at 1-1. Both games were played on Colosseum. The game Jangbi won, Free overextended with massive early pressure (to be fair, Jangbi was forced to use probes for defense more than once so the pressure wasn't entirely unsuccessful). The game Free won was a 30 minute macro-war.
Simply considering their playstyles and general statistics, I can give an advantage to neither player.
With the series looking as close as it does, it may be useful to compare the players' statistics on the maps being played. The maps for this best of five are Medusa • Colosseum II • Sin Chupung-Ryeong • Destination • Medusa.
In that case. Jangbi's PvP is 4-1 on Medusa, and Free is 3-3. Neither player has played any PvPs on Colosseum II, but on its predecessor, Colosseum, Jangbi is 2-2 while Free is 3-6 (with his last five PvPs on the map being losses). Jangbi hasn't played any PvPs on Sin Chupung-Ryeong, but Free's played on it twice, beating Tempest and Best. And on Destination, Free's gone 2-0, including a win against Bisu, while Jangbi's gone 2-2 with wins vs Pusan and Pure and losses to Bisu and Kal.
To be honest, in my eyes, anything could happen! However, I expect a long series. 3-2 in either direction. Jangbi should take Medusa, Colosseum II is a question-mark, in my opinion. And I'd assume Free to do well on Sin Chupung-Ryeong and Destination. Pay attention to game two. If Jangbi takes it, he's the slight favorite. If Free takes it, he has the slight edge.
Be sure to post your thoughts on the match, too. I'm eager to see if there's anyone that feels there's a clear favorite in this match... and if so, why! I might just learn a thing or two about PvP from your opinions. :D

Heh, ignore these phantom posts. :D

ahahahha
FREE WILL TAKE JANGBI TO SCHOOL
..but will promptly be raped by Bisu

holy crap those are mirror stats almost....
ill go for jangbi though

Since JangBi has to prepare for his MSL group Saturday (featuring strong Terrans Iris and fantasy) I think free has the edge. Also, even though he's a very strong Protoss, free doesn't have any major league achievements. Will that make him train even harder?

I remember the last time Free had to fight against someone who (at the time) had almost identical win percentages as he did. It was something like 53%-55% in all three MUs for both of them. People had no idea who to Liquibet for. Much or Free?
Free ended up taking Much to school, but Much ain't no dragon. Plus, Jangbi has Stork, the former PvP monster, to practice with. Free has...Guemechi? You also have to consider that in the Bisu/Stork "love video", Bisu lamented how Stork didn't practice with him but with Free instead. So Stork probably knows Free's game plan almost inside and out since they trained together in the past MSL.
I'd give the slight advantage to JangBi, but I'll be rooting for Free.

I am equally divided, I like free slightly more but I think JangBi has a slight advantage in the mid-late game, with the game that he lost to Free on Colosseum being the exception. Free has an advantage with early unit micro, and if he utilizes this he should pull ahead at least somewhat before JangBi starts the war machine. I predict Jangbi 3-2 Free, rooting for Free though.

go free just because i hate jangbi

Thanks for giving us an intro on this one. I am definitely rooting for a Bisu vs. Jangbi matchup in the finals. With Jangbi, I can still hope that he will surpass himself and become a Starleague winner. With free, I am fairly sure that he won't ever.

This one is going to be close! I hope free crushes JangBi...JB is by far the weakest dragon IMO. He just hasn't had to play many tough matchups lately.
Either way, the winner is going to get crushed by Beesuit in the final.

never liked jangbi, and this #1 spot in PR didnt really help. If he beats free but loses again to bisu in final, that would be so sad and funny at the same time. Mass silver medals at the KHAN house.

Correction: Free lost to much 1-3 and then slumped hard against protoss. Jangbi's pvp statistics lie, hes *much* better than 51%. Check the thread where it showed everyone's statistics for that year. Jangbi had an almost 60% pvp win ratio. Free's was 50%. Thats a pretty big gap.
Edit: GO JANGBI, FREE IS A FUCKING LOSER, SHOW HIM THAT 3-0

Ah, you're right. Recent performance shows Jangbi improving a great deal in the mu. Last 6 months he's 15-8 (65%), whereas Free is 12-14 (46%) for the same time period.
|
I'm think JangBi will take the series, because he's an absolute monster. I like free and all, but I can't see him taking a series from Jangbi.
|
I am hoping for and expecting a Jangbi vs Bisu finals.
