Just state upfront, I have nothing against Tricia Helfer. I'm a big fans of hers from BSG as well as EDI from Mass Effect 2. When I heard the announcement she was going to play Kerrigan, I didn't think much of it.
However, I was watching the scenes in SC2, fully invested in the story, then they replay some of the old dialogue from SC2, and hearing this strange voice just jars me out of the experience, this thought pop into my head, "wait, that's not Kerrigan". Kerrigan didn't have such a... well, calm demeanor and stoic / generic voice. Kerrigan was flirtatious (who can forget the lines "You pig!"), emotional, and had somewhat of a raspy accent that made her such an iconic character. The new Kerrigan... well, sometimes I couldn't even tell the voice belongs to Kerrigan's without subtitltes because it didn't have any distinguish features...
Perhaps the voice change would make sense for the roles changes to come. Anyone else experience this? (Hearing a strange voice for Kerrigan disconnects them from the gaming experience?)

It's simply not the voice you remember, it's normal to feel a disconnection when it clashes with your memories of the character. There isn't much more to it.

Not me, I like it. I'm just glad they made her multiplayer voice more tolerable.

Go to the Map Editor, place the Queen of Blades, load a test map and mess around with her pissed quotes. There's some classics in there.

Yes, it's really disappointing when compared to the previous VA. She just doesn't do enough with the role and it seems like she changed the character to fit her voice.

Not as disappointed as Jim not being a fat bald guy anymore...

yeah what's the story behind this? Raynor always had that bald haircut. Why did he decide to grow hair rofl

It's Tricia Helfer. I think she's be perfect for it, but I'm a BSG fan so whatever. The unit voices do suck though, especially for protoss. The phoenix pilots sound like systems analysts.

She doesnt sound like she cares about the role. Quite a few times made me cringe, the new raynor didnt bother me, nothing else but this bothered me. Especially her dialogue on the last mission she appeared in, she sounded soft almost flirty, I was expecting a school girl giggle.

The only thing that has ever bothered me about SC2's voice acting is that whenever a unit gets attacked, he wants to go running to his mommy.
"WE CANNOT HOLD!" "ABANDON SHIP!" What? You're in a fucking battle cruiser. Yamato cannon that kid and shut up please.

The problem is that Tricia Helfer is not a VA. Mostly she's a model : walks and talks pretty, but don't ask for much more. She can be an actress if you don't demand too much actual acting (i.e. make her play a robot) and play on her looks. Thus it's understandable that she would play a live-action role in C&C3 or a disincarnated voice in ME2. But taking over the role of a memorable character and main villain? No way, she just doesn't cut it even with all the sexiness. Also, being a VA is not simply about acting, it's also - and primarily I would say - about making a fictional and unnatural, out-of-this-worldly character feel as real as you and me with just your voice (when conveying emotions, about 7% of understanding comes from words themselves, 55% from face and body language and 38% from voice modulation; so you only have 38% to work with as the VA to infuse the character with life and act at the same time, hence the "voice acting" and not just "voicing" or "acting"). This is why Helfer had to change Kerrigan's character to fit her voice : she can't fit her voice to the character. She can't voice act. This is the same reason why Japanese voice actors are not the popular actors you see in movies and on TV : these live-action actors couldn't voice act if their life depended on it. Thanks to the anime and video game industries (continuating from the strong radio drama days), Japanese voice actors have become stars in their own right. Thus when you see a foreign Pixar or Disney animated film in Japan, the dub only ever includes a couple of known live-action actors for mainstream recognition, actors whose voice fit the characters (in the mind of the Japanese anyway). I'd like to see a Japanese version of Starcraft and Starcraft 2 with top-notch voice actors. Maybe it would make the script sound a little better.
Still, I'd really like to know why they brought Helfer over. Star power? Why not make Boxer voice Raynor (and iloveoov Tychus) while you're at it.

I'd pay extra for a copy of the game with Matt Horner voiced by Rick Astley.

The voice doesnt bother me as much as the fact that jim, kerrigan, and mengsk all look different than in bw. Its quite disappointing to look at a character and they are not how you remembered them at all.

At least, with Raynor growing the hair and beard, 4 years of not-giving-a-fck will do that to you.

This. A BC gets hit by a Hydra, OH NOS ABANDON SHIP!
Pisses me off.

If you actually watched BSG you'd know she wasn't exactly R2-D2.
For the record, I liked the voice. Then again, SCI was so long ago I don't remember old kerrigan voice.
I look forward to hearing her in HotS

...and all unit voices are like that. Who was the idiot that honestly thought this is a good idea? Instead of "we're under attack", it's "we're horribly losing"... that enemy scv that manged to get a hit off before exploding must've looked very mean and scary! Sadly, the dialogue and sounds in the game are kind of "meh".

Anyway, her voice didn't bother me - but it's not like Kerrigan had any memorable lines at all in this game ;p Did she say anything other than "you are fools for going up against me, prepare to die"?
