I'm considering buying the Razer Abyssus, but I'm struggling to decide whether I want to buy a pad as well and which one I should get. I've never used mouse pads, never really liked them, but the Abyssus is supposed to be used on a soft pad because its a fingertip grip mouse.
The problem is while I do use fingertip grip, I also use the heel of my palm as a base rather than gripping with just the 5 finger contact points so a soft pad wouldn't be optimal. Except I don't know if the Abyssus would work well on a hard pad, or just on the desktop, or if I should even get the Abyssus given that my grip isn't technically 100% fingertip grip.
Any ideas?

You're putting way too much thought into it. I have no idea why having your palm on a soft pad wouldn't be optimal.
The Abyssus tracks near perfectly on a Goliathus Control. It jitters on some other cloth pads like the QcK. I haven't tried it on my hard pads because the Goliathus works so well.

I use abyssus on a razer vespula hard map and it works perfectly. It's all preference man.

Hm, I am soon going to purchase the Abyssus aswell and getting mouse skates as my krait died due to the skates wearing down so bad :<
I am using the razer megasoma* for a mat, love it. although it is over priced. I think you should go for it if you like small mice. I use claw and fingertip grip.
*not sure on spelling
Also, there are 3 versions of the abyssus i believe. One with rubber, one without, the other..idk

I just got the Abyssus myself about a week ago and I love it. Using it on a Qck pad that's only about a month old, and they mesh perfectly. I guess jitters may happen when the cloth wears down, but if you're buying both brand new, I don't foresee any problems.

I've been using an Abyssus on a Steelseries QCK Mini (linky) for a few months and I've had absolutely zero problems. I use a fingertip grip at 3500 DPI with my wrist resting on the pad. It's very, very comfortable. It sound like you actually use a claw grip, but I don't see how it matters for cloth vs hard.

i just recently bought the abyssus and a razer destructor(hard mat) and it tracks realllllllllly well i went from useing another razer mouse and a soft mat to this mouse and a hard mat and it just feels so much nicer and i notice a huge difffrence in smoothness

i'm using a razer abyssus mirror edition.. i would say it's quite good, since it doesnt wear off or get dirty fast..
i'm using a hard pad too, not a cloth pad, and it still works great..

Okay, so what about no pad? If I just used a wooden desktop? Does anyone have experience using other Razer mouses without pads? Will performance suffer?
I'm not exactly rich, so I have to put this much thought into something that's going to cost as much as a Razer mouse is.

If you're tight on cash just get the Steelseries QcK Mini. It's less than $10 USD most places and is enough for the 1800 and 3500 DPI settings on the Abyssus.

YAY I'm getting the Goliathus for Christmas =D =D

I never recommend no pad. Like G_G said, the qck mini is great, especially for the price.
To answer your question, yes, it works fine with no pad, but as much as any mouse does -- not nearly as good.

Does anyone knows how Abbysus works on Goliathus Speed ?
|
I use goliathus control i dont think theres any better to combo with the mouse
|
Use the Goliathus Speed. The Control produces jitter with wear and threading inaccuracies. The thinner threading of the Speed prevents this from happening unless your pad is seriously damaged. I made a thread about this about 6 months ago when I decided to purchase my Abyssus. Trust me, it's worth it.

Get a good quality soft pad. Goliathus Control = for low sens. users (move the mouse a lot) Goliathus Speed = high sens. users (move the mouse less, or in a more compact area)
I don't recommend a hard pad, they wear out really fast, at least mine did... I had the razer destructor for about 4-6 months and it started getting shiny spots on the surface that messed up tracking.
Stick with a soft pad, they are inexpensive, and work well.. I believe the steelseries pads are similar to the goliathus just a lot thinner.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll be getting Goliathus Speed.
One last thing though... Australian pricings are bullshit. AUD is pretty much equivalent to USD now in currency exchange and yet shit still costs nearly 2x more over here.

I am getting razer abyssus too, but can't decide which mousepad better - goliathus control or speed. Anyone else having this combo, can you say how it feels?
|
I had a salmosa and goliathus, got abyssus + qck for christmas. Both work excellently. (Salmosa is basically the old version of Abyssus).
|
Well I hard abyssus has jitters on cloth pads so maybe it's just better to get a hard pad, so there won't be any problems?
