Day9 explains that he uses the arrow keys on his keyboard. Not sure if that lends much insight to exactly how he does it, but it is something of note.

EDIT: How do german keyboards compare to the ones that we use in the USA? Are there any types of differences?

Hotkeys are not 100 percent mandatory for high level play, it just helps a lot. EDIT: How do german keyboards compare to the ones that we use in the USA? Are there any types of differences? they have a few extra keys for äüö and such, and the placement of y and z are different (if i recall correctly)

I on the other hand would fail hard without hotkeys, I constantly add probes to hotkeys because of how bad my boxing is and sometimes I have random units that I find 5mins later that probably would have helped quite a bit 3mins before..

Not much differences. *Unless the bug that Grid Layout WarpIn is messed up if you play with a english client and the QWERTZ keyboard layout. // Beside that Hotkeys help your "left hand" to speed up, if you can compensate with your mouse hand you can works allmost faster if you "macro" your stuff with your keyboard hand and your units with your mouse. However, ofcourse you could improve even more using hotkeys ; TLO says it himself that he really "wants" to use more Hotkeys and improve his Macro. His micro is quite good obvisious.

Rest assured that TLO does in fact hit f when he wants to forcefield, he doesnt go over and click the icon.

Y and Z are swapped and the characters for shift+(1-0) is are different. Also, IIRC the < key is not on the US keyboard, but instead the shift is wider. Ok, i'll just make it easy for me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout#United_States http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout#Germany_and_Austria_.28but_not_Switzerland.29 So basically there is no real difference (except for lots of custom maps that use z,x and c for skills and are sometimes horrible to play on EU keyboards). TLO is just fast, really fast. Don't try to imitate him unless you are as fast as he is (and not just your APM; His APM could be twice as high if he'd use hotkeys. Not using them slows him down, but he's still that fast). It's just his playstyle, probably because of his supreme commander history, where hotkeys weren't as useful as they are in SC2 (not useless, just not as useful due to the different production style and bigger map overview).

Anyway tlos unit splitting is amazing. AoEs are less effectiv vs him, especially in tvt.

Considering that he came from a Supreme Commander background and doesn't have as much experience with BW as other pros, I'm not surprised to see his style of play deviate so much from the norm. Also, I heard that SlayerS_BoxeR is also a huge user of the keyboard arrow keys ever since the earliest days of his career. Even when other players abandoned the arrow keys in favor of more efficient mechanics, Boxer still used arrow keys, and to great effect too. Consequently, I wasn't surprised to hear Boxer proclaim himself as a TLO fan during a ladder game against him. They're both so similar in mechanics and genius.

It speeds up some parts of your game, but slows down others. I would really like to know what part of your gate hotkeys do not speed up. Until then this statement feels really incorrect and baseless.

To move fast around the map he probably uses either the F-keys or simply clicks on the minimap. Using control groups for micro in general would be pretty hard, it's more accurate to select only certain units and move them around to get the best results.
