I've seen this on 4chan more than a few times. I know people are upset that TL would miss a math problem (as funny as that mindset is), but I'd be more upset that TL is recycling old 4chan troll posts.

this is a common mistake due to the multiplier was "hidden" so people prioritizing the bracket first and do the closest thing to the bracket which is the 2. The correct answer should be the result of calculation that is made from left to right by order in which brackets are the ONLY prioritize. => 288 again, there was NO BRACKET infront of the multiplier therefore it should be execute after the division by 2 =__=

Btw yes I am one of those guys that will sway their answer when they see a poll and I started the problem did the parenthesis (god forbid anyone doesn't do that first at least) and then saw the possible answers n somehow made my self settle on 2 as being the answer.

In school I was taught BEDMAS methodology B-brackets E-exponents DM-multiply or divide (left to right) AS-add subtract (left to right) so yeah pretty simple.

when the problem is this. Is omitting multiplication sign stronger than another multiplication/division i'd say no. However maybe it is because of an algebraic convention If it was: 48/2n would u say 24/n? or 24n?

But seriously though, this has nothing to do with intelligence you just have to understand the signs.

Of course it doesn't, Why on earth would it? It's just an unneeded multiplication sign that wasn't written! It could easily be rewritten as 48/2*(9+3) would that make it less confusing? I am disappointed at the poll but it seems to be getting better

My favorite part of this thread is the people claiming that "where they are from" the rules are different... I guarantee mathematicians have long ago standardized notation to the point this is not true.

Or did i mis-memorise something. yeah... you missed that you only calculate the brackets first which means 48÷2(9+3) 48÷2*12 which leads us to a simple calculation with only divisions and multiplications, so you start from the left and calculate the division first: 48÷2*12 = 24*12 = 288 seriously guys, 2??? i think there are some simple math guides needed inhere!

But the one thing I've learned after professors abusing notation in so many ways is that you define mathematical symbols just like it is convenient for you. 12/2(n+y) = 6(n+y) or 12/(2n+2y)? It has always been 12/(2n+2y) for me, regardless of what math course from middle school to university.

P in PEMDAS means whats in the parenthesis, but when you treat the parenthetical as a multiplication, its just a multiplication So it becomes 48/2*(9+3) so you do parenthesis first 48/2*12 then order of operations, 48/2 first 24*12 which is 288 ROFL wtf, you site PEMDAS, but then you use it wrong? You best be trolling. 48/2 is not first because it is D(ivision). You have to do the M(ultiplication) first, thus getting 2. I feel like this is a 4chan thread where everyone is just getting trolled by OP.

I think some guys read the forum to pick the right answer after that. Otherwise I really don't get how come the 200 first voting people are much less math-knowledged than the next 200.
