I have a confession, I still enjoy kids/young adult cartoons more then shows aimed at my age demographic(25-?). When i come home from a long days work or when I am just want to relax, I throw on some Dexter's Lab, Animaniacs, Poke'mon, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho and a variety of other shows of cartoons from the late 80s/90s/early 2000s.
I don't feel "special" or that there is something "wrong" with me, but I just feel slightly off. When I listen to people talk about CSI or NSCI or one of the "adult" type shows I just feel so in the dark and unable to contribute, which I'm fine with. But I don't know what it is about shows today, they just aren't really that great. Sure I'll watch Big Bang Theory on reruns late at night, but the only show I actively DVR/make myself available for is The Office which is coming to a close soon. I actively watch newer episodes of Internet TV Shows then I do regular mainstream cable.
I guess I just wanted to write this blog to see if there is anyone else with their middle finger in the air like they just don't care about TV Today. Between my cartoons, internet series, The Office, and game streams, I'll always have more hours of content to watch then minutes in my life, but anyone else think TV sucks these days?
|
thats cool. nothing to be ashamed of. unless your a broney. broneys are pretty creepy. but old 90/80 s cartoons are awesome.
|
Oh man i totally agree. I was just talking to my gf about this last night. TV sucks these days and we mostly watch shows from the 90s and when we were younger. (Im 25 shes 23). Even the commercials were bad ass back then oh man! Pepto bismal commercials and what not had some humor to them! Ill have to come back later and reference some of them im kinda high right now. I moslty just watch me some worlds dumbest because i like watching people do stupid shit and hurt themselves, other then that its streams and whatever nonense i want to look at on the internet like you said.
|
I am with you there. The main shows I watch are south park, family guy, DBZ (dragonball/dragonball z both), star wars the clone wars (Love this show) and that's about it.
I don't watch any others so whenever I say I don't watch them they always go "what the shows amazing!". xD.

You can find tons of bronies on Team Liquid by the way! Search for the "My little pony" thread, which I am happily a "member" of (my favorite pony is Twilight Sparkle)

I know where you are coming from. Last summer I watched several Pokemon episodes on TV, and I still enjoyed it to a certain extent. Though I thought about it a bit, and then realized their simplicity and why I didnt have interest in keep watching them. They simply lack depth and complexity for the full enjoyment compared to more advanced anime / tv-series. No offence, but maybe you stopped growing in some way? or just never disovered the "more fun" shows? have you watched a lot of tv series and still felt that these old ones give you more entertainment?
|
My blogs been hijacked by bronies T.T
Nah I watch an occasional episode with my daughter for us to have something to do together when we lay down for naps but no...just too much sparkle and shit for me. Its a simple equation that I think is true for most little boys out there, explosions=good, less explosions and more sparkling indicates that its geared towards girls . Not that theres anything wrong with that...I liked sailor moon as a child too. Which is the same premise...what with representing virtues and what ever.

I have, I use to be a fan of the walking dead and then stopped watching because it became way too distorted and had soap opera esque plot lines on the farm, though I will probably pick up again once season 3 becomes available on netflix. I read the comics before seeing the TV Show, and in my honest opinion up to like issue 86 or so where I lost interest in reading it because it was getting slow for me, I enjoyed it very much.
Same with crime shows, not too toot my own horn but I catch on to things quickly most of the time so I can see most twists before they happen or have at least considered it a strong possibility based on things I've seen. Game/Variety shows just suck now days, at least in the 90s and early 2000s I could catch saturday night live reruns of the ones I enjoyed better then most today. There are a few exceptions I do enjoy the Ninja Course Show but that is just a serious version of MXG Xtreme Challenge.
And yes I do skip around haha, I don't sit and watch an entire series of a show unless all episodes meet a certain standard. And even then because I only use internet streaming services now I can pick what my evening line up is gonna be. Some shows I consider worth viewing every episode available at least once: Malcolm in the Middle King of the Hill Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Yu Yu Hakusho Most Gundam Series <2005(Zeta Gundam one is eh to me)
just for example, all these shows started or established before 2000(Yu Yu Hakusho is a bit of a grey area considering it was released state side in early 2000ish).
Sorry if I wrote more then you wanted to read >.>, I just felt that question felt a deep response, no hurt feelings if you don't readit.

I dont even own a TV anymore. At one point there was nothing that captured my interest and i got rid of it. Nowdays i prefer to watch streams or go to the cinema from time to time with friends thats all.
The older cartoons are the best and you forgot to mention freakazoid!
|
I'm 22 and I'm watching Batman Beyond right now with no shame. Cartoons are the best.
|
I'm 24 and still watch Naruto. My mate who's same age loves Tin Tin
|
Nah man, 22 and I love shows such as Adventure time, Regular show and others. Its not unnatural at all. Its just you enjoy a different kind of literature. Just because they may be aimed at younger audiences does not make it odd for you to enjoy them. They are made by people our age and above, not to mention the writing is very well done!! If people cannot appreciate that then who cares.
|
23 and watch naruto as well and have been through other animes too, kid cartoons I can't watch anymore coz they lack depth but you should try tv series like the walking dead, breaking bad, suits, entourage is good if you haven't seen it.
Either way just watch what you enjoy, but openly g you enjoy Pokemon is semi social suicide, but that doesn't mean you can't watch and enjoy in your own time.

Been watching Invader Zim recently, great show - somehow missed it as a kid.
|
yeah, tv sucks a big one. I just watch Sc2 or LoL streams. My favorite's are RobertxLee or Dan Dinh for LoL and Catz for Sc2

You have nothing to worry about. Of the shows you mention, most of them are written on multiple levels (ahem, like MLP:FIM) and while they can be entertaining for kids, there is also stuff there for older people that watch them. Since they're written by older people, things can slip in there. Of course some toons lack that kind of depth, but it's something that's been a part of cartoons since the beginning. They weren't originally kids entertainment - they were just creations of a different kind. (Warner Bros, at least. Not sure about Walt and company. But the Warner Bros classics were freaking genius. There's a reason why people of my generation know about the Ring Cycle of Wagner, and it has a lot to do with Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny going on about a spear and magic helmet.) I'm pushing 36 - and I still enjoy well written cartoons. Some things kindof skipped me by - I watched Animaniacs in High School and college, along with Tiny Toon Adventures, the Power Puff Girls, and a variety of "kids" shows. I still watch a lot of Cartoon Network (granted, mostly Adult Swim, but also things like Johnny Test), some MLP (hush), and I still enjoy a wide variety of older shows. Note: Do not include Anime. I don't care if it's that formulaic stuff like Naruto, Inuyasha, or other TokyoPop derivatives, or really out there stuff like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Excel Saga, DragonHalf (now there's an acid trip... literally), Ceres, etc... none of that is really geared towards kids in any sense. Pokemon is more of a product-driven cartoon (like GI Joe, MASK, and Transformers), as well as maybe Card Captor Sakura - then again, they had to do some HEAVY editing and dubbing for that show, like they did with Sailor Moon, when they tried to play them in the Saturday Morning lineup.
Also, Invader Zim is a great show, and I don't think it was even remotely aimed at kids... but then that stuff can fly under the radar so it's something that is enjoyable on multiple levels.
So, yeah. You have nothing to fear. You are among friends.

Its oke I like K-ON.
As for TV, the western cartoons kinda suck nowadays but there are some really good TV shows out there right now.
|
LOL Coag.
And yeah, nothing is wrong with that! Keep on enjoying what you enjoy. In fact, there are tons of people who enjoy older cartoons and the like. They're actually quite well-made, and you could argue that a lot of cartoons these days aren't as great by a long shot (though there may be something of a rose-colored glasses effect going on).
|
Dexter Game of Thrones House (well not anymore...) Downton Abbey Breaking Bad Mad Men Louie The Ricky Gervais Show The office (which you mentionned) White Collar (Maybe it's just me) Merlin (didn't watch that but it seems pretty good?)
TV is awesome these days. Stopped watching any TV in like 2003 but picked it back up in the last two years. I'll gladly watch any of these over 90's cartoons. They weren't great IMO, don't miss them one bit.
|
You're comparing top notch cartoons from their era to "awul" adult shows of today. Good shows are out there you just are not looking.

And *now* you have something to be embarrassed about.
Yu Yu Hakusho is awesome though

Well cartoons are made by adults. So watching cartoons as an adult can give you a different level of understanding/enjoyment.

|
Ashamed ? Noooo Wait till you start watching animes :D
|
Dude all of that is awesome. Like, shows that are directed towards people at your age group (and a little bit to my late teens age group) don't match that nostalgia the old shows have. Idk about you, but Gundam and Yu Yu Hakusho just make me feel good inside. That doesn't make modern shows bad, TV is pretty good right now at least , I don't ever watch it though :/. EDIT: Someone in here said watch community, I highly suggest you do that. That show is hilarious, I've watched it off and on since season 1, its SO good.

Community (favourite show forever, might not be everyones cup of tea however) Breaking Bad (if you have given this a chance and you still don't like it then that sucks man :/) 30 Rock (hilarious) Game of Thrones (For obvious reasons)
Don't watch crap like The Big Bang Theory or procedural cop shows. TV is in a great place right now. You just gotta look for the good stuff.
Watched a few episodes of community and while there are funny moments just wasn't for me...just didn't click.
Breaking bad is on my to watch list, just haven't found the right mood to watch it. Seems interesting enough but also seems kinda heavy.
same thing as community, i liked it for the first few seasons then it just wasn't my brand of comedy.
I gotta say I must be one of the few that isn't that interested in Game of Thrones, I guess because I never read the books I don't have this epic background, but I did watch a few episodes over at my friends house and while good it wasn't good enough to me that I have to watch.
Big Bang Theory is my "oh its like midnight and I can't find anything to watch and I'm too lazy to get my DVD case or hook up my external" show =D, no point for me since I live the life of a nerd every day minus working at NASA.

I see no one has recommended Archer, so I will. Danger zone!

There actually are a few good cartoons out there. Avatar, for example, comes to mind. There are other good shows but they are admittedly rarer than they were in the 90s when seemingly every other cartoon was freaking brilliant.

I honestly just think it's that you don't like to "invest". "Adult shows" usually require more of the viewer, while kids shows are just... fun. kids have shorter attention spans and probably can't keep "bigger plots" in their minds as actively as adults, so it's a bit more simplified, and there's nothing wrong with an adult to prefer that kind of shows. It's like most people who watch anime prefer simple casual action animes like DBZ rather than the more "heavy" animes for older people like Mushishi and Monster.
I guess, to use a gamer term, you're a "casual TV viewer".
|
Nothing wrong with that.
I'm behind 30 and still love One Piece and Naruto. I don't run around in anime shirts and talk about it all the time, but there's no reason to be ashamed of imho.

What are you basing this opinion on? Honey Boo Boo and American Idol? I barely watch TV, and even I could list a dozen amazingly good shows produced since 2000.
As for your list of cartoons, feel no shame. Dexter's Lab -- and everything else by Genndy Tartakovsky -- is watchable by kids, but it nails the Muppets formula of hiding a ton of adult humor in a kid-friendly show. The same with Animaniacs, which is one of my favorite all-time TV shows. If you like that kind of thing, you should check out Invader Zim and Spongebob, too, though in the case of Invader Zim I'd argue that the show is actually not that great for kids, even though it ran on Nickelodeon.
More generally, you shouldn't ever feel the need to "confess" to what you love. It's what you love! Society these days is much too filled with cynicism and irony, and people (like ElizarTringov above) find it much easier to hate on something than to express their passion of it. Well, fuck that noise. If you like DBZ, be proud of it :-D.
|
I'm 28 and watch some reruns of DBZ (but French version are aweful imo) and some "Fairy Tale" and clone wars (Vo though)
I have a hard time keeping with TV shows. The only one i watch now are
Mentalist (not bad not really good too) Supernatural (The "stupid" episode keep calling me back on this one) Vampire Diaries. (A little girly (and girlier) but i just love Damon lol).
But if you want to try a really good TV show (imo). Try looking for Firefly. That's just the awesomness in a TV show !
And don't worry. I got friends over 30 that CANNOT miss a One piece épisode.

I'm not into the anime and such but i'm 27 and watched 'the office' completely in the last week =)

The Wire and GoT are kind of counteracted by CSI/NCIS/Burn Notice/Law&Order and all that other garbage that pulls in much higher ratings than the good shows.
To the OP, those aren't adult shows so don't worry. Dexter's Lab and Animaniacs contain far more depth than anything CBS has.

I have gone on watching stints of some random kids shows that I used to watch. Just yesterday I saw someone post a Kim Possible video and I watched the entire thing. There's some sentimental value in these kinds of shows, and it really makes me smile watching them and actually getting all the references they make.
|
I actually don't watch a lot of TV either. It's different from person to person. I can probably iterate on this further in the future with a blog of my own that I care to post.

Depends on the show, but I rather enjoy anime and that seems to be the only genre where I'm watching half way recent things.(Most recent I watched was Season 1/2 of Black Butler and Deadman Wonderland both amazing!)
Archer is a good show that I pepper in occasionally just to spice it up, but iunno it is funny but it just seems like a more concentrated family guy where they just try to do the most "disgusting"(i.e. that professor and the fat chick randomly hook up after being locked in a closet or something from the episodes I've seem) and random things.
I do enjoy invader zim a lot =D i saw it originally on Nick till my parents agreed that it was not good for my age group and then have picked up watching the last few episodes I missed because of that.
