So today is a bright shinning day, but I'm wiped out, so I'm just spending it at the hotel; the sun is setting now, but I arrived here from Zurich at 11am and I'm here for the weekend for a business meeting.
VIENNA Other than Paris, there is no city that I ever particularly wanted to visit, but Vienna is where one of my favorite movies was shot, 'Before Sunrise'. Sappy movie I know, but it came out when I was university student and with the next 2 movies, it's pretty much been on the same timeline of my own life, so it's special to me like that. So tomorrow I plan to be stupid and try to visit some of the places that were in the movie and be a tourist and take some photos. ^^
I have to say though, in the first 1hr of being in Vienna, I've had one of the best coffees and ice cream I've EVER had in my entire life. Really! And things are extremely reasonably priced here, overall a really great city thus far- my hotel is just right across the UN buildings, so I'm about 10 mins out of the city center by train, but so far so good!
I ended up coming to Europe last week Sunday, but the airline I was on lost my luggage for 4 fucking days, so I ended up buying a set of ill fitting business clothes (cause I was wearing a track suit) and had a meeting in Malmo Sweden, where I froze my ass off, but the meetings worked out well.
MALMO We ended up flight from Zurich to ....Copenhagen! Wtf right? But there is a 20min bridge from there to Malmo Sweden and so I got to go to 2 countries in one day. keke. I'll be going back to Sweden at the end of next month, Malmo and Stockholm which I was told there are so many hot chicks in Stockholm so I'm looking forward to it.
The only interesting thing that happened was in Malmo; actually I was there to do a presentation for about 30 business people, but when I did the presentation, the reaction I got was a bit muted. Thing is, coming from Korea and being in business where I rarely work with women, I think that my presentation wasn't really appropriate for the Swedish business people. While there was only 3 women in the presentation, they gave me slightly weird looks, and the guys looked scared of the girls a bit, so when I'd make my jabs at humour, they wouldn't really laugh.
KOREAN OFFENDER OF SWEDEN Anyways, being the Korean that I am, I continued and end the presentation to some polite applause. And so what I did I say that was so offensive? Well, I put in 5 pictures of some of the models we were using in our marketing, of course the models weren't really dressed all the way, and, I make jokes like I travel so much I can't see my wife, but that is ok cause I have less stress that way and she wants to divorce me anyway. etc. Just self depreciating jokes mostly at my expense. Or how much we spent to get x number of celebrities at an event, but of course it was all just female celebrities.
So after the presentation we go for a break and the guys are coming up to me and saying how much they really like the presentation, but then they would look around to see who is looking at them saying it. And I'm thinking to myself that it's weird cause their bosses who were there had a great time and they are like 60 plus, so I'm still wondering what is wrong.
By the time the other speakers finish and we're outside for a smoke, the other speaker who is Swedish says, 'hey, you're presentation was great, but this is Sweden, you can't say or present that way here.' And I'm like, 'what way?' and he's like, 'you can't make jokes about your wife or have sexy girl pictures in your presentation and then make light sexual jokes about it,'. And I'm like, 'Oh shit, of course, I'm in Sweden where there is this equality thing going on. Oh man.'
Keeping in mind it has been over 12 years since I did a public presentation outside of Asia; so before I could apologize more, the other speaker says,' but you killed the presentation, everyone was really impressed. ' And I'm like, ' um, so I didn't just offend everyone?' and he like, 'of course you offended the women, but I think they were more annoyed than anything plus they know you're not from Sweden, but the guys, no they loved it, but they couldn't show it, they are scared of the reaction from the women.'
SWEDISH AND STRIP CLUBS So what I learned was that a Swedish guy would never, over his dead body, ever admit to a Swedish girl that he has ever gone or would go to a strip club even. But the first thing that every Swedish guy does when he leaves Sweden is go to a strip club lol. So by they time we go for drinks, I of course get confronted by one of the ladies in the presentation and she asks me and tells me, that she isn't a feminist, but that my marketing should include more material that would attract women, and to that I reply that the product is mainly used by men, so it's all a matter of priority when I have x number of dollars, why would I try to use those dollars inefficiently, but that I agreed that should I have a large enough market share I would look towards making things more equal for sure. Then one of the guys asks, 'is it possible to visit you in Asia, where do you recommend?' And I said, Macau for sure.
They of course are now interested as hell, so they ask me, 'what is so great in Macau' and I tell them, 'listen boys, if you come to Macau and if I take you out, the one day, when you're an old man and your grandson asks you what was the best time you ever had in your life, you're gonna say, 'kid, you're lucky you're even born cause the best time I ever had was in Macau and I almost didn't come back to Sweden!' To that all the boys cheers and laughed, and the girls gave me a dirty look and we all got wasted together on that cold night in Malmo, Sweden. ^^
But I'll say this, since Swedish women are so freaking hot, I'd suffer in equality too for that kind of Swedish love! I understand you Swedes! It's a hard life! keke.
I hope I have an interesting story about Vienna by Monday ^^ Prost!

hey ... im sure you will enjoy vienna.
as a resident of almost 8 years now, the city has sooo much to offer.
hf in the city

Rofl that conclusion is hilarious
Great blog!

When in Sweden, make fun of the Finns.
As far as the muted response to a presentation, that's a cultural thing that applies in many situations. Nordic people want to seem very "proper", never stepping out of line. I remember the first time I went to see Paul Gilbert in concert. We were queuing in front of the venue and PG&the band step out to get to their van. 100 fans and no one made a sound. That shit wouldn't fly anywhere else.
bit of a tangent but proves the quiet respectfulness of the culture.
|
Ahaha, wow. Sounds amazing so far, what stories :D
|
welcome to vienna, hope you enjoy yourself in our city
the weather was really great today. i hope you were able to experience it because apparently tomorrow it's going to be rainy and shitty =/
i hope you'll make a post afterwards about where you went and how you liked it in Vienna

This is so true. There are strip clubs in Sweden as well but most people don't seem to know it.

you probably should eat this cake they make there, its pretty good.
+ Show Spoiler +
they also have special wine (m not a wine person, i dont know much about that), but i think its off season right now.
then i was there, they had like what they called "bermuda triangle", where there were a lot of bars that were pretty similar to german ones.
And ofc the culture stuff, but there are guides for that.

I would love to go to Vienna one day. It seems like a tremendous city, enjoy your travels.
|
feel free to msg me for the best vienna tour ever, top notch clubs & bars....I accept high class cocktails & ciroc as payment
|
Haha scantily clad women in a business presentation. :D It's a no no. Luckily most of the people who could have gotten offended are also very likely to try to understand other cultures since that's also a big thing in Sweden so they'd be generally more accepting since your asian. :D
|
Gonna have to make sure I make a stop in Vienna when I go there this spring/summer then
And maybe Sweden too ;D
|
Lol! Gotta admit that I would have been pretty pissed if someone had women in underwear in their presentation and also kept making sex jokes. Great story though. Hope you will enjoy Stockholm, lots of blondes pretending they are on a catwalk if you are into that. Sweden is great is certain ways, kinda wish I could move back soon.
|
I'm curious what's so good about Macau? Besides a shit ton of casinos of course.
|
Entertaining blog, but I'm not sure why equality for women = suffering for you. I'm glad we have strong independent women in our country, who have more going on for them than just trying to please their man and family.

You just made a post infinitely more offensive that what he has described. But he will definitely not care.
I respect people that can make/take a joke or maneuver around accepted boundaries a lot more than just another generic drone. As long as you understand why certain restrictions are in place you should be golden.

keke, I had some really nice cocktails last night, and I went to some famous austrian restaurant by the river that specializes in spareribs, very tasty and down like 4 beers, we called it early at 1am cause I had been up at 4am, so I was passing now in the taxi ^^ but today just business meetings all day, so next time I'll take you up on that!

Yeah, yesterday was great, but meetings today anyway, but so far Vienna is freaking great, the prices are great and I was told that this is a 'no hit zone' for russian mob families to raise their own families here, so pretty safe!

Bermuda triangle I passed by last night, but we were in the taxi, it seemed the place for young early 20's people, not for an old fucker like me, but there were a lot of chicks ^^

Since I'm in the porn industry I think I was pretty understated! Just kidding haha, but it was a 45 mins presentation, and it wasn't sex jokes, but rather more like eye candy jokes, of course it was a conference for professionals ^^
I'm in to hot women looking hot walking hot and being hot ^^ So I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy Stockholm a lot!

For a Korean, not really that great, but for a Swede, probably his dreams come true, but when people spend 8k USD on the night, it's going to be pretty good, no matter how you swing it.

The same reason why you're glad you have strong independent women, it's cultural. I'm sure if you were in a gender role society instead of a gender equality society you'd feel uncomfortable, too, but for me, I'd be suffering of what I'd be missing, not necessarily suffering because I'm there. When in Rome, I'm still a Korean ^^

I've actually lived in both Vienna and Malmö, so I suppose there is always the fact that Vienna is, at least, a lot better than southern Sweden! I'd definitely recommend trying some Austrian food (other than the candy and the cakes) if you've time to find a proper restaurant.
On another note, did you have any trouble with people's English when you were in Malmö? From experience I know that a lot of people in southern Sweden (especially if they're older than 30) know English well, but the accent we suffer from down here makes it sound hilariously bad in many cases. I imagine getting wasted with a bunch of Swedes could cause... communication issues

Heyo, welcome to Vienna!
Hope you enjoy your time here, the city has a ton to offer for everybody. Tons of history to explore for the interested but also a great place to go out and have a good time. How long are you staying?

I think Vienna was the first city to have Cafes (cause the Turks borught it with them), so be sure to visit them a lot. Sacher Torte I cant recommend cause its so much chocolate, your stomache wont like it, theres many great other cakes and nice stuff in bakeries. also eat Döner!

I've never been to any of them, but there are several in the Stockholm area. As far as I know there are none in Malmö due to being so close to Denmark. Denmark has a different set of laws that makes operating strip/sex clubs easier than in Sweden where they often get closed down.
https://www.tuscl.net/c.php?CID=1004 Has a few of the clubs in the Stockholm area, there is also Club Harem that isn't on it.

that makes sense, it's a weird thing for there to be controversy about anyway. "i want to have a royal family that doesnt do much and are mostly symbolic but i dont want any of them to have seen tits"

Personally I was disgusted by vienna. Like, it is a super chill place, much culture, they serve those long tasty roasted breads at every bar, the beer, especially the dark one is sooo yummi. And then you go from jewelery shop to designer fashion store with picturesque 500 years old buildings and find hungarian beggars with no shoes in the winter between them. And people with fancy coats and diamonds around their neck just walk by while the poor die and nobody gives a shit. Dunno, was really disturbing to see the difference between the rich and poor so blantly. All the shops close at like 7pm, felt more like a village than a capital city, but that also had it's charm.
|
What you describe sounds like the first district (living for rich austrians, shopping for rich tourists). Is there no "I have money so I can afford to live here" district where you are from ? And yes most of the shops close, so go buy groceries or clothes earlier, after 7 its time to drink :D

Yep, all European cities I've been to has that problem to some degree. Was the same in Seattle when I was there for TI3. A lot of beggars in the centre of the city (more than in Stockholm, but might just have been the areas I was in).

As promised some surprising pictures!
So if you look in the background you see a poker tournament! Didn't know that EPT Vienna was going on at the same time. And...right above my shoulder is..Elky! (he busted out of the highroller shortly after- it wasn't my fault! but he made the money at least keke)
And here we are outside after lunch with his lovely girlfriend, wasn't kidding when I said I got fat keke, but fuck it, I'm fat and powerful like an Archon haha.
So I have to say, I love Vienna, although last night it was freezing with non-stop rain. I basically when out with my clients to lunch with Elky & his gf and then after we freaked out his gf enough, (We dropped off Elky at his place) Then we went to the Hilton to eat cake and finish off our business meeting, then we went to another bar and I nearly passed out, just because I was so tired. They took pity on me, drove me to the hotel, and I'm taking the 930 flight back to Zurich, I arrive at 10:45 and then I'm on a 4pm flight to Hong Kong, so I have a lunch meeting at the airport then off I go. ^^
I'll be back in Zurich/Vienna by the end of next month, I have to say, from the discussions above, well I'd probably look like either a happy mindless tourist or a rich fucker, I didn't see many beggars at the palace, but I guess it's actually better to have them around the richer areas: 1. they probably can get more for their time 2. whether you ignore them or not, you do see them and I think that is always important, no matter how uncomfortable it can sometimes make you feel, but 3. when I'm in places like Manila, in the richer areas you wont' see beggars because the private security gets them out, but the real destitution of these people is unimaginable so, anyways, I wasn't disgusted by Vienna at all, in fact, Austria seems quite the unique country considering it's history and where it is geographically.
Anyhow, I gotta go catch a place, but much love from a Korean in Vienna ^^ I miss the coffee and ice cream already!

All the shops close at like 7pm, felt more like a village than a capital city, but that also had it's charm. sounds like you never left the first district. also i've been to numerous European cities and there were beggars at pretty much all of the big ones. i'm not saying we always treat them super well, but i don't think Vienna sticks out in that regard. agreed, most of what he said could probably be applied to parts of Oslo as well. or pretty much any decent-sized city, at least in Europe Yep, all European cities I've been to has that problem to some degree. Was the same in Seattle when I was there for TI3. A lot of beggars in the centre of the city (more than in Stockholm, but might just have been the areas I was in).
You guys are right, I stayed pretty close to the ronacher and most days just went there and back to my hotel. I got around and the other areas defnitly were more pleasant, but on my daily bases it left a negative impression, which ofcourse got totally screwed by getting payed to stay at these fancy locations, Also I am from Berlin and am not THAT aware about the problem here, probably because it is chic to dress all greenie and I usually don't visit tourist areas often in my hometown^^.

Man I love reading about your adventures. When you visit Stockholm I'm up for meeting up, given you have time! Not even sure what you're actually working with, but I'd love to have a Korean contact. Bare in mind that I'm relatively young(27years old), but I'm an entrepreneur working with big industrial projects, property management and various project. I'd love to hear about how that shit is in Korea, and more about Korean culture!

I am unaware of how prevalent it is in Vienna, but I guess it also depends what area of Berlin you're hanging out in. If you were around Zoo you'd always get your share of regular penner or the purpose-dropped gypsy beggars at kudamm brought in by the busload in the morning.

First of all, nice to hear more from you. After the 'how to be a man, korean style' blogs, it felt almost natural at least reading it.
Very interesting how the presentation went. Taking into account cultural differences at presentations is a basic concept, but it's very easy to have a tiny misconception with pretty large consequences. Personally i don't mind jokes in any direction, including my own, so i probably would've reacted differently to sexist jokes then your experiences in Sweden. From the blog, it almost seemed as if the males were ashamed of their taste regarding those jokes, which seems awkawar in the first place, but also a bit funny from my perspective.
But what i'm really interested in: have you noticed any (negative) consequences of those jokes in the presentation? I don't really know the context, of course, but you might have gotten some impressions on businessrelated cases that somehow relate to the presentation. I'm very curious as to how things turned out.

The same reason why you're glad you have strong independent women, it's cultural. I'm sure if you were in a gender role society instead of a gender equality society you'd feel uncomfortable, too, but for me, I'd be suffering of what I'd be missing, not necessarily suffering because I'm there. When in Rome, I'm still a Korean ^^ mh well you worded it like swedish men were suffering from equality and dont worry i dont feel uncomfortable in korea
I did word it that way actually, but I'd suffer too if I had those kind of women keke, and you greedy bastard, you can't have it both ways! keke (sure you can! haha)

I'd say your read is pretty accurate, I think they weren't really ashamed, but rather, the social fear to look as though you are not for equality is pretty real as I can see.
For business, nothing bad, at the heart of hardcore business is the competitive nature of it, the fact is the more hard core the business person is, male or female, the more naturally aggressive they are, not to say that you can't be hardcore without being feminine, if you're a chick, but these alpha chicks they know what the situation is, and they give as good much as they take. I think my experience with UK alpha corporate women are, at first they are pissed off at me, but for me, being Korean, its not a forced, thing, it is a natural cultural state, so Im not there saying women should be like this or that, rather, I'm just being me and at night when we are drinking, I'm making sure they are well taken care of from all the perverts and make sure they get to their hotel room fine and if other men act rudely to the ladies, I tell them to mind their fucking manners. So in the end, most of them at least respect that I'm not simply trying to put down women or get a rise out of them, but I'm Korean, my values to women are different but part of that is of course, in my way, feeling the need to protect them, even if they don't need it or don't want it or think it's insulting, it's my natural inclination.

You know, as a Korean, we actually never put down women, we love em, we adore them, we don't think negatively about them whatsoever. But that is also in the context of our society of gender roles. ^^

The swedish feminist dictatorship is a scary thing to behold. In all seriousness though, I thought my danish friend was just making jokes about the feminism thing there, goddamn.

Oddly enough, the two Swedish women I've had flings with haven't minded my random misogyny jokes. I will vouch that they are def way above average in attractiveness compared to non Swedes.

Very nice blog so far, I enjoy reading it very much If you are interested in visiting the university (I work there, some researching, some teaching) or the biggest school of austria (work there too, mostly teaching and trying to be as annoying as possible to the kids :D .... no just kidding, the kids love me, the collegues hate me for that ), maybe I can find some time to squeeze you in and show you around.

There are some beggar in Vienna, but most of them belong to an organisation, especially the non austrian ones. I wouldn't believe it at first, but before I jumped into conclusions I asked them some questions in a friendly way before I gave them money the next time and none of their answers were conclusive. Sometimes you see different beggars with the same (not the same message but the same(!)) plate with a message on it. Sometimes holding a child, sometimes singing badly, sometimes selling you something. Sometimes reading your future (and they are WRONG ) Sometimes they sell a newspapermagazine called "Augustin", when they see you throw it away they get it from the waste and sell it again.
As a person being handicapped since I had an accident I like those the most who claim to be injured but don't walk like their injury would make them walk.
I have watched shit like that hundreds of times already, some other things I have watched: especially in the richer district the density of the beggars is tighter, and every couple of hours you see the same man going from beggar to beggar, collecting money. When the beggars "shift" is over, he often walks away like he never was injured at all and obviously happy and healthy. Also there is this one guy, I know him for years, always has the same phrase "hast du ein bisschen kleingeld für mich?" (can you spare some coins?). He is between the railway U2 and the university of vienna (main entrance). When he has collected enough money you see him phoning with his always latest iPhone (yeah, he prefers apple )
I watch this stuff since I moved here, I watch every beggar before I give them food or buy them a hot drink. In my opinion the only real beggars are actually austrian citizens, I haven't had ONE encounter with a non-austrian beggar that didn't make me suspicious about the truth of their motives...
This all comes from some eastern (rumanian, bulgarian) or southern (italian) mafia, so you should only support those who look like "legit beggars" to you. I thought "slumdog millionaire" was a good movie with that as a sidetopic.
Also a good read about beggars

I'd say a lot, I mean socializing outside of the business meeting, most western countries are like that; I would say if you were to drink heavily it would actually look quite negative; but when going out drinking is part of a high level business meeting- I'd say in East Asia nearly 100% (less so in Japan now though, maybe 80%-just an estimate), I mean it is a necessity.
But I do want to emphasis, drinking a lot being drunk is a lot different than drinking a lot and still being able to hold a somewhat rational business discussion is a totally different thing. The later is what you're looking to do. Simply being able to drink a lot and be an asshole isn't going to take you far in any situation, business or otherwise ^^

Philippines has a similar issue of syndicates using a beggar system as a front. But that's pretty sad too, as you have new born babies being carried around all night long by women begging as if it were their child...life is hard..
