Never said it was bad. Personally, I think it's overrated (tops far too many BEST GAMES EVAR lists), but still good.

FF VI is better. No RPG beat FF VI (or III)

Cool i'm going to buy this. I've always wanted to play ff7 but back then i had no PSX also I heard the pc version was shit so never cared to look for it.

PC version was fine, there is only one difference which your average gamer will never notice or look for.
In every room there is a set list of encounters, you will always get the same fights in the same order in the same room. Thats it.

I decided to be cheap and pirate it (I already own two copies for PSX and this "remake" is honestly little more than the old PC version but on steam and with worse music...). Pirating this is kind of weird; the online connection, even though quite useless, turns out to be a semi-effective anti-piracy measure. I was able to get it to work well eventually, by making sure to not upgrade it beyond the 1.06 version.
I would definitely recommend people who haven't played FFVII before to buy it. Easily the best FF ever, still an amazing game, the story, music, gameplay... it's all great.

recommended as the best story and characters in history of the world!
if you like insane scale of story-telling like a novel then get this.
(make sure you look at a walkthrough (at gamefaqs.com) to pick up the two "hidden" characters, Yuffie and Vincent, who are major roles in the game)
i can emulate this with good/modified graphics already but a steam pickup is a great option! presumably they used the PC version (with slightly improved dialogue and Ultima sword animation)

Still have the PS1 version, fun game.
I wouldn't use a walkthrough like above says though. There's no need. You can pick up those characters at any time as they don't disappear.
+ Show Spoiler +Besides, walkthroughs spoil easy tactics. Like poisoning Lost Number and then just healing all the time and you won't lose. Heck, some bosses don't attack back if you don't hit them and just poison them.

Actually the PC version allows you to choose a 3rd party MIDI synthesizer for the music and you can definitely find one that will sound as good as, if not better than the PS version. PC Version will also be enhanced thanks to your graphic card anti aliasing. There are also numerous mods to improve graphics a lot. + Show Spoiler [example of mod] +Characters replaced my models with a lot more polygons Does anyone know if mods like this work on the newly released Steam version? I'm kind of curious to try something like this out, might pick it up if mods function similar to old-school PC version.

They do. I've already modded the sound.

Like poisoning Lost Number and then just healing all the time and you won't lose. Heck, some bosses don't attack back if you don't hit them and just poison them. Completely agree with this post.
0 spoilers ahead (unless you check the spoilered text): It's obvious that there's something 'secret' at on point in the game and that is simply how you find one of the two secret characters, so you're shouldn't have trouble finding where that character is unless you don't bother with things that seem "obviously secret". The other you are likely to encounter and can figure out on your own how to find again to actually get them in your party, which is quite a fun + Show Spoiler +Teehee! Also frustrating! experience if you don't happen to spoil it or choose all the right options the first time.
Some of the things that can make the game more difficult if you already know the tactics ahead of time. + Show Spoiler +Similar to what Hey Sean. said, many bosses cannot be poisoned/slowed/stopped etc. as they are immune to many or all major status effects, but it's certainly not the case for all bosses, which is also fun to discover either by accident or just from trying just in case! Besides which, people who find things that can be considered 'exploits' (such as unreasonably easy and lazy methods to beat certain enemies) and then call a game 'easy' based on THAT are fucking morons, obviously. ^__^

FF7 was definitely a good game but I think it definitely over rated. It had a decent early story and a very emotional and powerful mid story but the ending of FF7 was the weakest part. The ending was pretty lack luster. I think FF10 had the best story line with a powerful intro and ending off with an amazing ending and an unexpected emotional ending. The ending of FF7 was yay they killed Seph and the world is saved etc etc etc. It wasnt bad ending but from a story that had a very strong plot, the ending was pretty weak.

So, killing the bad guy at the end is just... not good enough of an ending? Man, Hollywood's going to be pissed when they find this out.

FF10's starts out good... But the more you learn about what actually is happening the more you realise that it's just utter garbage.

nvm, sound still has issues on Steam version just like the Square Enix downloadable version.

I'd prefer they released another FF to PC than 7 or 8. I've played both of those at least 3 times, all on PC. I didn't think those releases were bad, btw. FF7 allowed you to play with one hand using the numpad (so you could use the other hand for drinking beer or something else).
I'd still like to play any of 9, 10, 12, 13, although I think it will be hard to match the magic of that period. Nowadays, I don't have much patience, and traveling or just leveling you character isn't something I can spend much time doing.

You could quite easily set up a psx emulator to let you play all FFs with the numpad...
