Of the 85% of people who fail 1st year in France, 50% are already gone by first semester (so only 1 semester lost to find out wether you're any good at being a doctor) and 8% will succeed in the next year. That leaves 20% who fail the exam after a year and 7% who fail the exam after two years. Most of what you learn in 1st year med schools is general math, physics and biology which are necessary for any scientific studies. Even if you do fail, you haven't wasted a year of your life since chances are this is stuff you'll have to learn for other studies as well. Its better than our current system, which involves letting everyone and them being indebt for the next 10-15 years. Neither system is perfect, but honestly at least our system results in more educated people faster. Hahahah... more educated people faster? My wife went to MIT. She deserved to be there, she is brilliant. But she was upset when she got there and saw it full of people from China. Not because she doesn't like Chinese, but because the Chinese government was willing to invest into it's people and send it's brightest to the best technical school in the world. And the US isn't. Many of her friends that are also brilliant and got into MIT, didn't go because of the cost. The US government (read: the people of the US) isn't willing to invest in it's people like that. For some reason, we still think the free market is the way to go. Look at how that is working for us with healthcare... But yes, we hand out more worthless degrees to people who don't deserve them and let schools sink people in debt so the Dean can make big bucks. But we aren't actually educating are people. Think about it.

Think about it. There are more than enough ways to get your degree at a good school for little to no cost in the US. Don't be so naive. Most people who come from overseas are older (22-25 or even older) by the time they get here. At that age, almost all Americans will also have the opportunity they do (very cheap and good education)
