The only reason he was being retained would be as a PR exercise or to prevent company secrets being revealed to competitors. So from that you can infer that the company thinks that nobody would care that he's left the company by April, or that whatever project or company process is currently needed to be kept under wraps would be finished by then. With this big of a transition, being accessible in an advisory role can be helpful. It's not just for PR. Now that the transition appears to be settled, he's ready to leave altogether. But you are correct that he was basically 'done' once he stepped down.

Valve now occupy the "no game at all" position it's been over 5 years since dota 2 and CSGO and they doesn't seem to be making any new games. Plus both of them weren't great game of themselves as much as they were uptaded version of older game, well maybe less dota2 but CSGO is pretty much a reskin of an (amazing) 15 years old game. Valve last original game, barring that card game, was Portal 2 back in like 2010-11 it's safe too say they aren't really a game studio anymore. Also now that Obsidian debug their games before selling them they have been great too.

There have been a lot of outstanding game developers: Bioware, Rockstar, Bethesda Studios, Id Software, etc. But both Valve and Blizzard were more than "just" that, they built bigger things than just outstanding videogames. However, Blizzard has made a lot of wrong decisions these last years and has been infected more and more by Activision. The leaving of Mike was just them showing that now they care more about finances than making the better game. Valve has been a lot of years just milking the Steam cow... and given their numbers I can't blame them. They stopped behaving like a game developer ages ago.

This is... not true in the slightest lol CSGO is nothing like 1.6 or Source. Guns, player movement, the way rounds operate, etc are so different for all 3 titles. OT: While Morhaime's position post-stepping down was probably mostly symbolic, I still find it very concerning that he is completely leaving the company so soon. This doesn't necessarily mean anything for Blizzard as a whole as he had already stepped down, but it does feel like the Blizzard of old is truly, finally gone. Blizzard was the company I grew up dreaming of working for. Today? Not so much. I'm interested if he has any plans to be involved in the gaming industry in the future. If he does, I hope it brings that old Blizzard polish we all grew up with. Best of luck to Morhaime and best of luck to Blizzard Entertainment.

I can't say I played that much CS in my life but overall it's pretty much the same game sure some things change but it's not like they build an entire new game from the ground up with new idea/concept/story... It's like if you play Fifa 1998, 2008 and 2018, the feel is gonna be different, the mechanics might vary a bit, there is gonna be alternate mode, different game option will be available, match will be longer/shorter but all in all it's still pretty much the same game.

To be fair, they always cared heavily about finances, they don't become a billion dollar company if they don't, it's just the philosophy that's changed. Phenomenal company reputation isn't what they're going for anymore.

You say "barring that card game", but it was designed by the guy who made Magic: The Gathering (I think), and it's supposed to be the ultimate electronic card game (like how Dota is the ultimate Moba and CS:GO the best fps). Also Dota is continuously updated so it's safe to say that Valve is still a developer, they just haven't made an adventure game in a while because it takes time to make a great one.

As much as I respect Richard Garfield, him being part of the development for Artifact doesn't mean much besides being an advertising shtick for the game. And the game itself is mostly just a very elaborate scheme to get people to pay Valve in order to use the game to buy/sell goods on the Steam marketplace. Sure it has some neat mechanics, and some people find it fun, but I have a hard time believing they really set out to make a great game with it, more like "we need a new way to get people to use our marketplace so we can sit back and make a shitload of money" then they decided card games and Doto is "so hot right now" and went down that path.

They went from "let's make the best game we can and make a ton of money" to "what can we do to make the most money?". Well, I have no doubt that they will make great games in the future (big budget and talented people), but the Blizzard we all knew is no longer here since a couple of years. Meanwhile I'll wait for the Diablo 2 remastered...
