because de ligt is actually smart and wants to join a club that won't need another half a decade to win a relevant title?

Jesus christ lol that is nuts fee. loool United management biggest blunder impending. That guy has no business on a football pitch, worst player in the England NT after Danny Rose. De Ligt has Raiola as his agent, sadly.. he negotiates well for his client and his own financial gain. Juventus was able to get de Ligt because they offered around € 14.000.000 / year (and probably 20% commission for Raiola). Rumour: Barça wanted to get de Ligt as well, offered €75M, but couldn't/wouldn't cough up the required salary / commission.

Revenue in the big leagues has increased dramatically (due to specific TV market economics that may or not be short lived, we'll see) so it's only normal that top teams drive up transfer fees. The pernicious effect though is that for 2nd tier and lower teams, transfer revenue, which is highly volatile, can now tower over operational revenue, which is more stable. Managing these clubs becomes way more risky. Ajax and Benfica have made many millions in transfer revenue - should they now throw the dice and increase salary spend to become more competitive or be conservative and accept a fate of feeder club and never sustainably compete for the CL. It's even worse for small teams in the Portuguese league who have annual budgets of 3-10M and now often sell players for those same amounts.

Its much better to spend that money towards academies, young players, scouting etc to get an even bigger profit and have even more potential talents till one day this football bubble breaks - at the rate we are going with transfer and wages it wont be sustainable too long imo Yeah a player like Bale earned almost as much as the entire base formation (first 11) of Ajax last year. They did let go of their salary cap of €1M last year though, with players like Tadiç, Ziyech, Blind, de Jong and de Ligt earning around 2-4M yearly. Excess money should go to development of youth academies, scouting and not overpaying for terrible players (LOL MAGUIRE). That said; they do strive to up their budget to €150M, which would make them able to compete with the tier just below the top (like Benfica, Porto, AS Roma, Arsenal, Napoli etc.) in the long run with occasional runs like 2017 (final EL) and 2019 (barely missing out on the final of CL). Maybe it's a romantic thought though, they did get lucky with an extroardinary year in which everything went right and the development rate of players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Donny van de Beek was skyhigh. If they could actually keep their budget at €150M, that would be pretty amazing since they only receive around €11M from national television rights. It's a volatile market though. While clubs like Man. United could just skip CL income a couple of years, CL income is a major boost for Ajax. Their budget was €90M last year, they received as much in their CL run (prize money, marketing pool, ticket sales etc. included).

I don't think its a huge blunder, its english tax plus premier league to premier league inflation but the guy is proven in the premier league, he might make some errors on the national stage but show me who doesnt? De Ligt looked awful vs England for example in the mini Euros getting done over by Sancho and Rashford and that horror tackle to give away the pen. Clearly he knows how to head a ball though as proven with his goals and goal threat but a 19 year old un proven Premier league player vs a proven premier league player ready to go and English. That is why it isn't a blunder, fee is ridiculous but it isn't a blunder just destroyed on the fee. I kept saying someone should take Koulibaly which would be a similar fee if not more but he is 28 so maybe not as long term investment i still would have went with him over Maguire personally but it isn't a blunder. De Ligt to Juventus is fine but he has joined the most defensive league out there so he will need to be switched on that side of the game but he is playing with Sarri so maybe not XD On Neymar, while the fee is stupidly high, he would solve a lot of issues going forward that Barcelona have and im sure Real Madrid would be foaming at the mouth to have both Neymar and Hazard on the wings if Real wanted him instead. Fee is going to absolutely astronomical, they want there 200 million back they paid for him but he will bring you match winning performances...all be it if he isn't actually broken (keeps getting foot injuries because he gets rushed back to early!)

Actually, looking at why he left PSG, it looks like he wants a guaranteed 2-year contract. This is probably the best shot we have at getting our up-and-comers for the next two years to learn from a truly world-class player https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/16/dani-alves-willing-join-arsenal-200000-week-deal-10358310/

They already have a finished attacking squad. Anything else is just overreach for a player who is not worth it. Especially one who has missed over 6 months due to injury.
