Recently, I haven't been able to run MS powerpoint / onenote. (word still runs fine)
When I .exe it, this Windows Installer thing pops up say saying "preparing to install" and once the bar goes all the way complete, it starts all over again and doesn't end unless I press 'cancel.' It also lags my comp really badly when its going through this process.
Any reason why this is happening and how to get rid of it?
It just started happening recently.

I've had the same problem with some other programs randomly, never found a way how to fix it sadly. :/
http://www.openoffice.org/ is a good alternative if you can't get it working.

oh, get ms office "activation killer"
I believe if you like, give it a directory of your isntallation cd rom or files it'll fix itself but i never bothered.
Here's the fix I use. HIT CANCEL. Now, what'll happen is, if you double clicked on a file, the file wont open but the program will! now open the file since the program is open.
win!

Get Office Blue edition (torrents or blogs, google it), its a version that install all office programs and doesn't require validation.
It's the version MS employees use or so i heard...

actually try this first
If, when using a MS Office application, you have the message "Preparing to install ....", just create an empty folder named "XLStart" in the following position: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11". Now restart your excel application and it should work ...
it's low impact lol

if all else fails...
download and install SubInACL http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
open notepad and paste in the following text
cd /d "%programfiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f
save in notepad as fix_office_permissions.cmd double click the newly created file and allow to run (took about 5-10 mins on my system)

I did this on a laptop at work and it made shit worse. I had to do a repair with Office 2003. The only solution I could find (besides a fresh reformat) was disabling Windows Installer in services, but you'd have to reenable it when installing new programs.

I get this, when the installer pops up, just click cancel, then it will close and your program will open ;/

I think what you are doing works for Ms 2003 b/c it happens @ my school computers.
I'm on vista / ms 2007 and I did what you suggested and nothing happened.

This got my onenote + MS WOrd working.
However
When I try to open Powerpoint I get " this application has failed to start because msvcr80.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
Since I don't have the install CD, anywhere I can get this .dll and where should I put it?
