The subject of this thread is not a license to roll out your inaccurate, misinformed, poorly conceived, tired, and downright offensive theories about race relations. |

I support everyone's right to say stupid shit if they want to. I can't tell how many people actually get angry at words, and how many people just really enjoy being self-righteous and attacking people.
it's mostly the self-righteousness thing. it is observable whenever anyone with celebrity within a community blunders or gets accused of something. this sort of scenario gives people a chance to soap box (see kich's stupid long post where he even espouses some personal ideals about race relations). then, the bored people on forums who almost do nothing else with their time (like the people who watch E! and read glorified tabloids with their time) end up picking a side and fueling the fire. you have people who seriously have worked themselves up into thinking complaining about a celebrity making racist comments is a good use of their thursday night.
i'd like to make a new subforum request. i might actually make my own thread if i can get enough content for the op, or someone else can if they want. i come to the sc2 general forums a few times a day and usually find threads complaining about what someone said. there's usually 1 a week or maybe 2. these threads become very large. they are very active for a week or two. i think a new subforum for caster and player comment blunders would be very popular, among those who want to contribute to those threads and among those who want to avoid them altogether.

Orb's response on reddit. At this time it has negative karma at reddit and is easily missed:
This one was me a while ago at like 3am when i was drunk and I do apologize for my behavior. I was off-stream, had been cannon rushed 3 games in a row by this garbage clan (who I proved was stream cheating), and this guy had already called me the N word 6 times so I figured I'd throw it right back at him. Obviously not a good decision, but at the time I was so infuriated for having about an hour of my life 100% wasted that I made the wrong decision in my fury. I am not a racist in any way, but this word is specifically the only word on the internet that still offends people, which is the sole reason it is used. I like/love/hate people based on who they are, not the color of their skin. I really do hate some people, but actually looking back I don't think a single one of the people I dislike is black. So I guess that makes me racist against white people?
Obviously this doesn't justify my actions at all, but you are all really holding some insane double standards here. Destiny uses the N word literally daily, as do players like Spades and KawaiiRice, yet no one seems to care. Nothing in my life has ever made me as angry as starcraft does, and when I get THAT angry I usually want to throw out anything that will make my opponent as offended as possible. Not a good attitude, but it's a hard one to improve with how frustrating a game sc2 can be (especially when your opponent is doing everything he can to make you angry on purpose).
It still remains that when I am casting I am 100% professional. If you have too tough of a time separating my real personality (aka when I'm casting) from my darkest personality that comes over me when I'm ridiculously angry (aka when playing SC2), then I am sorry for ruining your viewing experience, but that is just silly. Until I am the least bit unprofessional with my casting I don't see how these past actions (that people seem to love posting all of a sudden now that I got a job) should be affecting my career in the slightest. There's a reason I switched to casting. I just get too angry when I play sc2.
With my anger I used to be like other gamers. I used to break stuff. You always hear about progamers breaking their keyboards, breaking their mice, punching through a wall, etc. I used to do this kind of stuff, and in fact caused some injuries in my right hand from slamming my desk so hard. Instead, I switched to BM/trash talk as it is a much safer, less harmful form of venting anger. 99% of the time I keep it to acceptable standards, but when the OP of this who played against me called me the N word 6 times there's a bit of hypocrisy when I repeat back the same thing he just said to me and he posts the screenshot on reddit as if he is some saint.
Also, I wasn't representing EG when this happened. Just because the screenshot is posted after I get a job doesn't mean it happened after I got a job... just look at the video you can see me back at home in MD. Have none of you ever made a bad decision while drunk when someone else is doing their best to aggrivate you?

When I call someone "a fucking bitch" or "cunt" it doesn't mean that I hate or think less of women, the same applies to "nigger", perhaps even more so due the history of that particular word. It's meant to be demeaning and nasty towards the person you are attacking. It says absolutely nothing about your own beliefs regarding racism and sexism.
Usually what happens when you "rage" is you venting your frustration and anger towards yourself - you are the victim and merely projects your own frustration onto others.
Orb may be a racist, but the evidence so far is severly lacking and all we can do really, is to merely speculate.
Netolip supreme court rules as follows - NOT GUILTY! Although I think your entire position is fallacious, you do realize nobody with a brian is asserting that orb is actually a racist? Whether or not orb is a racist "on the inside" is not the issue here, I thought that was a simple understanding There's quite a few people calling him racist in this thread. His post was most likely directed towards them-

the fact is that orb lied to SirScoot denying these allegations when he was caught on his own stream raging with identical language.
For me this is what really grinds my gears about him. I dont care that he swears. I care that he went through a whole lotta trouble to try to deny it, and then ended up being proved wrong.

If they let Greg slide, they should give orb a chance as well.
Just my opinion. The difference here is Orb is paid to talk and IdrA is paid to play. If you only hate the fact that IdrA is bm then you can still just watch him play and forget about the other stuff, Orb doesn't have that luxury. To put this in perspective, lots of people want Moletrap gone from GOM because he has a bit of a nasal voice and he sometimes screams when there's a big battle. They want him gone because they don't like the way he gets fucking excited? That to me is ridiculous. There are also probably a lot of people who want Moletrap gone for having a nasal voice that want Orb to stay even though he behaved this way, funny how that works out...

I probably should. That is true but from where I was born and raised, his words represent anger, not racism.

yeah because saying "nigga" (a common term of endearment) in a friendly tweet is exactly the same as calling somene a "dumb nigger" in a fit of rage

If you look deep enough you will find almost every player/community figure in a compromising position. The point is, we should not let this take away from what orb has actually provided for the community. Yes, he is bm, and if it really gets out of hand, he might need to fix that, but please don't sit here and try to make a mockery out of orb when he's been contributing hours and hours of casting, when you sir, have done nothing.
It isn't necessarily that he said the word. As you said, sometimes people lose their patience and say something they regret saying. We're all guilty of it. That doesn't make it okay, but that's not something we can control.
The problem lies in that he didn't immediately take responsibility for his actions. If he comes out and apologizes right away, none of this happens.

If this were ANY other public forum his behavior would not be tolerated and his career would be over. And for good reason.
How can we expect anybody to take professional Starcraft seriously if professional casters are allowed to use racial and homophobic epithets on their broadcasts? It's the nature of online gaming. Are you telling me you haven't been called something as offensive while laddering (or other online games)? People get jaded, simple as that.
Its the nature of online gaming. Also in the nature of online gaming: being unprofitable, being dismissed by popular culture, being considered a "kids thing".
You want to change peoples perceptions about gaming or do you want it to be a niche hobby forever?

The wrong place, the wrong time. Guess Orb wasn't ready for the big stage. While it is ok to call him out on the bullshit and lies, it's pretty much over for his SC2 involvement. Was a promising caster nonetheless.

His intro video has been removed from YouTube. Looks like he'll be gone from EG now.
reddit makes me want to puke.

If he just said "I was raging, didn't mean to offend African Americans in particular, it was just a really stupid choice of words. Sorry to everyone I offended, sorry to my team and the fans." it would have blown over in a few days.
There's always a group who just takes pleasure in taking people down. Remember that idiot who said EG should fire Incontrol for restreaming the GSL final with his own commentary? Incontrol admitted he made a mistake, apologized and promised not to do it again. When the little fucker wouldn't shut up he was shut down pretty quick by the community and the mods on TL.
Orb didn't really do any of this, certainly not until he had to. Are there some people who try to bring him down for fun? Probably, but since there's also some who are genuinely angry it's much harder to point them out.

Today is a sad day. For the first time I said to myself I'm really disappointed in the community in the 3 yrs I've been apart of it

This shouldn't even be a thing...drama for the sake of drama is pointless and in cases like these hurt esports more than the act itself. people grow up.

HuK has tweeted "nigga" several times now, it's not false.

Well Starcraft can really bring the worst vocabulary of all games i played , no FPS or MMO show half the rage i see in SC2..
He just got crazy about that particular game, and he must listen to 2PAC so everyone is a nigger or a homie to him .

Never really liked Orb anyway....Always seems like a toolbag, so this isn't a surprise for me... Hope this is the last we see of him in E-Sports.
