nope. for the most part the missions start in a nice sterile area and you pretty much advance forward to find the aliens.
there's no landing where you step out and die right away from being shot in all directions. and then when you think you cleared them out, there's people under your ship.
on the other hand the AI is nice as they try to outflank you and they use their stuff properly instead of walking in circles and wasting turns.
i also realized that the leading cause of death among my squaddies is probably cars blowing up. cars imba.

i like how when the skyranger lands, there's a cinematic of everyone getting out of it.
no more send the tank down and get shot at by 5 different aliens, then get your blaster launcher carrier psi-controlled and nuke everyone before they even leave the ship situations. I was actually pretty amused when I found out that they automatically deployed your troops from the skyranger. Goddamn flying coffin. Wait, they don't kill you anymore the second you leave the skyranger? The first step out of the skyranger was the most exciting moment of every mission (unless there were chryssalids involved). Yeah, the troops begin the level already deployed. While I do agree that stepping out of the Skyranger was one of the most intense things in X-Com, I also feel that it was one of the most annoying parts of the game. In the end, I'm not really for or against the change.

I've lost men on the first turn, due to advancing forward and taking cover that's facing in completely the wrong direction from where the xenos actually are. So, I think it's a fair compromise. You feel like you lost guys because you screwed up, rather than because the game screwed you.
Oldschool X-Com fans generally like getting fucked with by their games though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I miss the pilots parking the Skyranger right next to the UFO. Really cut down my run-times to the UFO.

Yeah close enough for a blaster bomb to be your welcoming party as you step your first rookie out and gets your entire squad smoked. I don't miss those lol.

either i'm dead tired or this game is pretty hard on classic mode.. it plays a lot diff than xcom and tftd in the tactical mode, i like the strategic mode though there are a lot of meaningful tradeoffs

Fuck yes! Getting this now...
Some of my earliest PC memories... staying up past 10pm (I was in like 2nd grade) trying to finish a certain mission or tech build or project or just anything. So many hours with my buds playing together without saving, just having a blast.

48% downloaded. Ufo Defense was one of my favorite games as a kid/teen. In fact, it still ranks very high on my list!!

is there a lot of maps? - about the only thing holding me back

Damn. Playing classic ironman right off the bat. This game is hard. It seems necessary to research new weapons right off the bat because the standard assault rifles are terrible against floaters and chryssalids.

That's the part where you throw a smoke grenade on turn 1 and then do nothing else that turn. Safe deployment.

In a video interview one of the devs said there is like 80 maps or so, and I think even some parts of the maps are randomly generated. Not 100% sure on the last part though.

I think there is a preset number of maps, and can't remember what the number is, but the tile sets are not randomly generated. Rather, you and the aliens always spawn in different spots so you may never enter a map on the same side or location. Least that's how I took it.

Just brought it on PC and wow that game is nice! Playing it on Classic Ironman and I must say it's pretty hard! Played alot of the UFO 1994 and i think so far it's a good remake! I love the small touch they did, like the walking sound when Soldier get out of the skyranger, bring old memory's!
|
Yea this game is so fun bringing back tons of old memories from the first one.
|
I'm glad the game seems pretty awesome but I'm telling myself I can wait until the Christmas steam sales

Is classic just a difficulty.. essentially Hard? It goes Easy -> Normal -> Classic -> Impossible
SO I assume its just Hard and not necessarily different mode. I'm just getting started but being spoon fed too much, how can I get it more non linear? Or does it just do this at the start?
