Edit: I dunno, I think Dwight is, but maybe it was just SVG. His teams were pretty ass I felt from a roster perspective but his mere presence carried them into the playoffs every year, and that tends to be my barometer of a transcendent player. Maybe I'm undervaluing his roster those years, or maybe SVG was just batshit awesome (I think he's a great coach, don't get me wrong).

You're probably right that big market losers and bad small market teams with cap space will both be more likely to attract the selfish cancer type of player rather than the transcendent superstar. After all, if an S-tier talent like LeBron can turn a team with Mo Williams as its second best player into a perennial 60-win team, there would seem to be very little reason for discontent. Certainly, it takes an awful lot of incompetence in order to piss off hall-of-fame talent enough to up and leave a perfectly good situation, so I see where you're coming from in saying that the truly great players are what create the markets (and usually don't have enough incentive/have too much to lose to leave). So yeah, I was wrong. :p The frozen envelopes still favor the big markets though!

There really are no post perimeter players outside of Lebron and Chris Paul to even come close or surpass any of those guys seasons. More so for 2008/2009 Kobe's playoff run and Wade in any playoff year except 2007. Dwight has not shown anything to me that makes me say "this guy could dominate in any era". He just isn't that kind of player. Superstar for sure. But not dominant. RE: rosters. Dwight is great, but SVG doesn't get a lot of credit for designing that defense around him. No one in NBA history can take a roster of "bad" defenders and make a top 5 defense for multiple years. It's impossible without a coach that knows how to get bad defenders to play good defense. Dwight gets more credit than he deserves in that regard. It's like people forget where Dwight was in his career before Van Gundy showed up. ETA: If you could draft Kobe, Wade, Chris Paul, Dwight, Lebron, KG, Duncan, Dirk, Rose and Deron Williams from their rookie years assuming they develop to the level of talent they are now Dwight doesn't end up a top 5 pick. Lebron, KG, Duncan, Wade, and Chris Paul are almost a sure lock with Kobe being the only exception.
