The numbers are looking good for the JP release, but since it's not coming to the West till 2018, it's not in the running. I have not, not particularly an rpg fan these days. I would be pretty surprised stateside if a DQ game ever became goty, but in Japan it's always been very strong (I think these were more popular than final fantasy, even before final fantasy games started to be not so good).

It's just a thing that happens when you have fans constantly calling them the best games of all time. Nier is probably the game I enjoyed the most this year of the games that would be reasonably expected to compete for such a title, and has some obvious comparisons that can be drawn with zelda. I found too boring. Compared to other games with the action done by platinun, nier just feels too lackluster. Nier has no reason to have an open world. Dual stick shooting sections are cool tough. What Nier has really going for it is the story, but 9S game play drags a lot. Nier would be better if it was a book/manga/movie instead of a video game. Because everything playable in Nier is done better by other games. The only advantage I get from nier being a video game instead of other media is those fights where you are the one initiating, like the first fight against the machine brothers.

Zelda is a critical darling in the west that is also popular with mainstream audiences. It's one of those Japanese games that are far more popular in the west compared to Japan.

Other contenders woukd be Nioh and P5. I'm not really a fan of Persona setting, I would rather play a mainline game instead. Fortunately a SMT has been anounced for switch, with Odin getting the spotlight. Nioh is simply great. It is much better mechanically than the souls games, it's amazing! I guess some people would prefer Souls setting, characters and story, but I find using historical characters, mythos and settings kinda cool.

The poses some people struck (like the Zora prince and the Sheikah turned kid) made me cringe hard. Felt like a JRPG sometimes. Purrah was pretty in the face Japanese with the genki shit. Outside of that, I didn't really notice anything out of the general norm.

Half cover is 50% to hit, full cover is 0%. Most cover degrades over time from being shot at. Different weapons will have different effects. For example, one common effect type is honey, which does extra damage and roots the enemy for a turn when procd. Some weapons have bonus damage against an enemy type. Some weapons have bonus proc chance against an enemy type. Overwatch does not exist. It's a far more mobile game than XCOM. Your actions are shoot, move, and then other character abilities. Moving to an ally lets them springboard(Team Jump) you to continue your movement action. This does not end your turn, which I had assumed because the team jump movement barrier is yellow as opposed to light blue, the same way XCOM's normal move and dash are. When exiting a pipe, your character has a set amount of squares they can move, it isn't what's left over from your move action. Being in close quarters can end up with taking a hurting. During your move action, if you move into an enemy square, you trip them up(call DASH) and deal some damage to them. A lot of the weaker enemies can be effectively 1shot by tripping and then shooting them. The characters have unique aspects and roles to them. They have ability trees broken down into movement, attack, technique, and other. This is nice, because it gives you a reason to use different characters depending on the battle. Something I was concerned about. The more interesting of them all is probably the movement trees. Mario can land on people for extra damage, RabPeach can Dash through multiple enemies, RabLuigi heals when he dashes, and Luigi can team multiple times in a move. Mario is generic all around offense. Think taking a ranger and give him a Specialist's rifle. Oh, and I lied, he has overwatch. RabPeach is a damage sponge/heal, RabLuigi is a debuffer, and Luigi is a sniper and has overwatch too.
