He should have confiscated the laptop. It's probably the fact that he is such a weak little man that he is worried he would give in over the confiscation, so to escape his fear and self-doubt he shoots it. Twat!!!

You've not demonstrated any understanding at all, you've just applied some labels. Why is she acting in ways that you consider "selfish"? Why is she feeling the way she does? You can't answer without speaking with the daugher.

TL;DR he basically is screwing over his life lesson by being too authoritative and not addressing her complaints in an adult manner.

I swear some parents just get addicted to the powertrip of being in control of their child. The reaction he displayed is JUST AS, if not MORE childish than the girl's post and general reluctance to do chores. He should have confiscated the laptop. It's much less about him than you think. He has mentioned that he had previously grounded his daughter AND he had warned her that worse things would happen. While I do not agree with the shooting of the laptop, I do believe that a punishment is definitely necessary. In a typical Asian household disrespecting one's parents would be taken quite seriously. While they clearly are not Asian, this family has a more traditional viewpoint on life that centers on respect. His reaction, disappointment, is more than justified. His actions less so.

Also, did anyone notice his little speech about how when he was 15, he went to school AND college, he worked 2 jobs, and he was also a volunteer fireman? We can discount the fireman part because volunteers never go or do anything unless they're called up by necessity, so being a volunteer fireman basically means once in a blue moon you fight a fire. But then there's still the issue of the fact that two jobs alone take up a persons entire day for every day of the week, and hes claiming he did this as well as went to two schools and was able to do the homework for both of them. I'm sorry but thats blatent lies, simply because that would mean he has nothing else to do but sleep for 6 hours and then start that day over.

The fact that there isn't an unbiased informed opinion to go along with the video makes this pretty much useless, the daughter could very well be acting like a spoiled attention whore, or the dad could very well be an authoritarian asshole. Also is it legal to fire a whole clip's worth of ammo without any reason for it to be necessary (like robbery or something)? Especially since he was pretty close to a street, seems like there would be some trouble about that.

That is pretty blatantly disregarding general public safety to teach your kid a lesson. if a bullet can skip over the ocean for 2 miles to kill someone on shore....

Obviously, shooting the laptop was a bit over the top. Some people would have mentioned selling the laptop or something like that. I honestly don't think it would have the same effect (whether good or bad) as shooting it would. I think the real point to be seen here is that the Father is trying to teach his daughter to be thankful. She had been warned before, and she did it again. Also, it seems like what she posted was very disrespectful. There are ways to express your feelings without being a jerk; she probably needs to learn that. The principle of disciplining your child with a punishment is perfectly fine. She is going to be mad right now, but in the future she is probably going to be thankful that her Father raised her (seems like he is trying to from the video) to not be a disrespectful person and gave her responsibilities (or chores) to do to prepare her for the real world. A little over dramatic, but still good parenting.
