Everything you need to know is there, but I'd like to discuss it here.
As a brazilian LA player, I am happy, they listenned!!
"In conjunction with the start of Season 3, we’ll be linking the European and Russian StarCraft II communities together; North America and Latin America will also be linked together, as will Korea and Taiwan."
I brought the FAQ here in case you are that lazy (or they block Blizzard wherever you work):
Q. What is region linking? A. Region linking is the process of connecting multiple Battle.net regions to each other for multiplayer matchmaking and communication purposes. The North America and Latin America regions will be linked, Europe and Russia will be linked, and Korea and Taiwan will be linked. In effect, the players within the linked regions will be put together into a single group instead of two separate ones -- benefitting players in these linked regions in a number of ways.
Q. Why are you doing this? What are the benefits of region linking? A. Having a larger pool of players means the automated matchmaker for ladder games will be faster and more effective at finding opponents at or near your skill level. Similarly, more players means faster queue times for custom games, which benefits both players and map creators.
From a social perspective, players will be able to create character and Real ID friendships with people from the newly linked region, which they couldn’t have before.
Q. When will this happen? A. The region linking process will happen at the same time as StarCraft II Season 3, which is currently scheduled for the week of July 25.
Q: Will region linking affect which game-client languages I have access to or the payment methods I use? A: No. The client languages and game-access methods available to you in your region will not change when regions are linked. You will simply be able to play and connect with an even larger group of players.
Q. Do I have to do anything? A. No -- linking will happen automatically.
Q. Does this mean that the ladders of linked regions will be combined? A. Yes, players from linked regions will be combined into a single ladder. This means you'll have access to a larger pool of players at all skill levels to play against, which will improve the experience for players no matter what league they play in.
Q. How will this affect my matchmaking rating (MMR)? Will I need additional placement matches? A. Your MMR will be unaffected by region linking. Placement matches will be handled the same way for the start of Season 3 as they were for Season 2.
Q. Will playing with players from the linked region impact my in-game latency? A. All players in the linked regions will be connecting and playing through the same data centers that they were using prior to region linking, which is the main reason why linking these regions together is fairly straightforward. There should be no impact on game performance.
Q. I'm a map creator -- do I have to republish my maps or do anything differently? A. No special action is required. All of your published maps will be retained during the region linking process.
Q: How does region linking affect the Grandmaster league? A: After region linking, players from linked regions will be combined into a single ladder. This applies to the Grandmaster league as well, and there will only be a single Grandmaster league between the linked regions.
Edit number 10:
Additional information:
NA + LA case:
LA players will be added into NA database, which means that NA players won't have their MMR reset nor nickname/code will suffer anything. However, in the case there is a player with the same nick + code in LA + NA, it is the LA player that will be require to have a new code or nick, LA players will have an additinal (and mandatory) free name change if that happens to them. In the same way, LA players will have their MMR reseted, but NA players won't.
Most likelly the RU server will be the one added into EU server database, and TW server will be the one added into the KR server database, so RU, TW and LA MMR will be reset (and players will have to play their 5 placement matches again). However, their achievments and friends list won't be reset!!
Yea this sounds pretty awesome, I thought they would have included SEA as one of the regions to be tied in with either NA (since they use the same server locations? idk much about this -_-) or KR since its relatively close.
But i guess since the LA region was seriously slacking on player count they just decided to toss it in with NA all together
Wow, pretty awesome for the Taiwanese, or not.. depends on how you look at it I guess. Will their grandmasters be happy because of all the learning opportunity, or will they be sad because they won't be close to grandmaster anymore?
Will the removal of essentially a GM league from the new joined servers mean that masters will have a large boost in ability? And would this effect any of te lower leagues? Or is masters big enough to take the influx of 200GM lvl players on op of the current master lvl players??

Why is it a bad thing? Sure you wont be the top of the ladder anymore. But instead you will be able to compete with the best players in sc2
Well im not that happy since i have NA + LA account on the same email. meaning that they will probably erase one of them. So i guess ill have to send them an email to give me an extra cd key or give me my money back for 1 of my accounts.
I felt like LA and Russia might die due to too few players... even new but unknown maps on big servers like NA are hard to get games to start (custom).
I guess China is big enough itself? Though I played against a CN player on NA and he said he was playing on NA because there weren't enough CN players... maybe CN + Taiwan would have been better, unless SC2 in Korea is really not that big
I know this makes sense from a server standpoint, but I think it's a bit of a bad sign actually. I'd imagine the logic for separating NA from LA, Taiwan from Korea, and so on was that there would be enough players in each region to successfully support all leagues at an adequate level. I think this mostly means that LA, Russia, and Taiwan don't quite have the numbers Blizzard was hoping for to justify the duplicate regions on the same servers. I know the game is very popular, I guess it's just not quite as popular in those regions as Blizzard hoped it would be.

well u can ask to transfer ur NA acc to EU or KR and still play in LA/NA

Does that mean what I think it means ? (one free account on RUS server for an EUR person for instance ?)

SEA is in Singapore, LA's server is being held on NA, and Taiwan's server is being held on KR
I mean, I purchased NA, but now I can get some kicks playing the game in portuguese (even though I know it's total crap). Plus I get to play my friends who didn't have the foresight to actually purchase the NA version!

If I got this right, you still can't play in portuguese if your account is from NA. The only difference now is that you and your LA friends can join the same game.
People with 2 accounts (LA/NA) now will choose which language to play, and that will be the only difference. $60 for a language pack that should be free. So sad =(

what happens to people with accounts on servers that will be linked? I know quite a few people from central and south america for example who have both NA and LA accounts. Do they get refunded for the account in the region that no longer exists?
I wonder how good these lesser known servers (Taiwan, Russia and Latin America) servers compare to the larger ones in skill terms. This is good news though, Blizzard is working its way through our requests. Next clan support and replay sharing.
Seriously though, as long as this doesn't cause lag issues I don't see an issue with it.
Thats only true for MMOs =\
@topic
Took them long enough. And now I have a free smurf account. double win!

The two best LA players are Grandmaster material for NA, as well as the top 20~30 are NA Masters level. This is just a rough estimation though, I could be wrong. Truth is, most of GM at LA are barely Diamond.
Wow poor Taiwanese are gonna be in for a serious hard time when the patch comes. Also was not aware there was a russian server, all the russian/ukrainian gosus played on EU most of the time right?
imagine tho, that they allow everyone to go onto 4 different servers, call them europe USWEST USEAST and Asia and then you'd have all the players pooled... I wish we could see such an innovative idea put into place... Reckon it has been tried yet?
For those worried about lag issues, don't be.... LA is just 5% size of NA server.... so if you play 100 games, only 5 will be against us (anyway.... probably you have already played vs us since most of us already had NA accounts).
This is pretty cool, since LA community was divided... and there is almost no impact for NA players.

Yeah I'm also wondering if you buy a TW account, that you can play on the KR server with it.. This is interesting at the very least. I don't know if it will turn out well though. I rarely have problems searching for players to match against. I'm confused as to whether you match up against players in LA on NA or you can share customs with them, chat channels, friends, etc.

nah, the Taiwanese always wanted their server to be merged with the Koreans since their server is also located in korea
I think we all are a bit disappointed that we still don't get the chance to play with the godly koreans.. Oh well, it's still a step in the right direction, but if it took a year to merge the close servers - who knows how long its going to take for a real cross realm play.
Q. How will this affect my matchmaking rating (MMR)? Will I need additional placement matches? A. Your MMR will be unaffected by region linking. Placement matches will be handled the same way for the start of Season 3 as they were for Season 2.
I really wonder about this. It's unlikely that a specific MMR corresponds to the same skill level on the different servers, because the players haven't faced each other before. This means that there has to be some sort of adjustment when the ladders are joined. Maybe even a painful adjustment (loss streak) for some players.

Fucking Great! This was supposed to happen ages ago. Everyone on my country was playing on the NA server, except a couple of people who didn't really notice that.

...?
I'd imagine you'll surely just be placed where your mmr is appropriate? Like, if as many people say LA is roughly a league behind NA in terms of skill, you'll probably end up in the league below, or lower in the league you're in now... so high dia LA will become high plat/low dia NA+LA. The quote seems to imply that.

The way I'm reading it:
A KR version of the game still connects to the KR servers, while a TW version still connects to the Taiwan servers. It's just the servers that are linked.
Which means that if you buy a TW account, and use it from the US, you are connecting to a server in Taiwan, which in turn relays traffic to korea. I'm guessing a US - TW connection is worse in terms of latency then a US - KR.
Or am I wrong here?
(Same logic would hold for EU/RU and NA/LA. Which means that it is probably beneficial to own a copy of the game in your own region, latency wise, because the connection from server to server is likely to be better then when you connect to a far away server on your own.)

Well since these locations are held on the same servers (as anyone that's spent any time pulling data from [us|eu].battle.net would know), I can't say I'm suprised. la, ru, and tw have been the bottom 3 servers in size from day 1.

yeah, its actually one server split into 2 half. I think the reason for doing this is the population of Tainwan/LA/RUS is just too little.

Ah, that clears it up. Just don't understand why they were seperated in the first place then ;p.
There is one thing that game to my mind now. How will the GM Ladder work on these servers ? Will there be 2 different ladder ? Will they also be merged, or will it become the 400th best people ?

I think it will be just the top 200 of the newly combined regions. Everyone in the smaller region of the respective merges (LA, TW, RU) will have their MMR reset so even their old GMs will be starting from scratch.

Mostly payment plans I believe. Blizzard's answer to that question was that because players from diferent regions had diferent prices/payment plans, like montly fees or 6 months limited editions, they couldn't be on the same servers. I guess finally that stopped being a problem for them.
In Korea wasn't the game even free if you had an WoW active account?

either way, this is a good thing yet i still don't understand why this couldn't've been like this from the beginning

From the TW bnet website, they will all be merged which means
1 ladder 200 gm spots for THE one and only TW + KR server(same with US+LA/EU + RU whatever)

You sir is a total idiot. (: Everyone knows that the two regions are hosted on the same server, so there won't be any latency problems. And this 'HUEHUE' laugh is really outdated. Brazilians used it instead of the North American 'ROFL' or LMAO' like 10 years ago. Nowadays we all use the standard "hahaha" laugh. Also, the "GIB WINZ PLS" is the equivalent to the North American "LOL F***** F**** YOU B****" from 13 yo kids.

I've already bought two copies to play in NA and LA so I guess I've been boned then...
Maybe I can use my one free transfer to take my NA account to EU?
You could try to contact Blizz and explain your situation, they're very lenient for their fans, so there's a good chance you'll get a free 'server change'.
I'm happy I get to play Russian guys on my EU account now but I bought an LA account just to play with a smaller and more "quiet" community and now my money has gone to waste. TT Now an LA,EU, and NA account becomes simply 2 NA's and an extended EU so blah I don't really like this but so many LA dudes that didn't know if they should switch will be happy so I guess its fine, just blows to know Blizzard has fucked me out of 60 dollars. Still the community on LA weren't happy so much with the quiet like I was (having access to NA regardless myself) so there benefit is worth the loss of some of my cash I suppose.
Good news! Now make us able to change servers as well and give us more than 1 ID change and I'm completely happy. Well not completely. But praying for LAN mode won't stop Blizzard's greed either, I guess.

You mean the information for the LA players is different than the one above? Where did you hear this?
It's in the FAQ at the Brazilian forums. Apparently the characters will be transferred to the NA server(which will become the American server) with achievements, but MMR will be reset since the play level is so different for both regions(a NA mid-diamond is equivalent to LA low-GM). Also, if Nick/Code conflicts, LA players will have to re-type their name(it could be the same name) so the conflicts are cleaned.
On July 12 2011 02:36 azka wrote: So far, LA GMs, Masters and Diamonds are pleased with these news... below Plat not so much since they probably will descend 1 league.
GM's will definatelly drop a league, as probally most masters and maybe diamonds. Almost all "GM material" players from LA already play on NA, as most diamond and master level players.
On July 12 2011 02:36 azka wrote: So far, LA GMs, Masters and Diamonds are pleased with these news... below Plat not so much since they probably will descend 1 league.
tbh i think almost all LA players will experience a 1 league drop. I think it is pretty well-accepted that LA server is the weakest server in the world skill wise.
Taiwan connected with Korea now? Sen is already arguably the best non-Korean zerg and now he gets to train with Koreans on ladder. Be afraid foreign scene, be very afraid.

Now if they would just allow us to choose which server we can play on then it will be equivalent to the wc3 ladder. Going it the right direction at least :p
I contacted Blizz to see if I could just get my LA account switched to SEA server so I don't have 2 accounts on NA but I totally doubt they will be accommodating those of us that bought LA just to play on LA and not to have 2 of the same server. Since after all there combining things they will just say "you still have access to LA but its just now along with NA so you will get the same great battle.net experience but with the added benefit" of blah blah blah lol. I really enjoyed laddering on LA though since I would hit the same player over and over and it gave me the feeling like it was always a best of 2 or up to even 4 games sometimes (not to mention I was playing GM's when I'm only diamond level on NA TT ).
Seriously though, as long as this doesn't cause lag issues I don't see an issue with it.
Haha, I used to play a game called Ragnarok Online, but on several private servers. There actually was a BR 'town', but my friend and I were pretty good and would go and attack everyone there haha~

It seems through the FAQ that the sole purpose was to get a larger player base. And china I think in itself is larger than TW and KR together, making it warrant it's own base. A KR + TW + CN would properly give big performance problems when doing matchmaking, because a much larger playerbase is online.

I wonder how they stumbled upon such amazing technology so quickly? Oh wait...
Now just get us the ability to watch replay together :D
Will make it a lot easier for tournaments... Also it can't be that hard to have a "replay-watching-admin" that can control when the replay is starting for everyone!

Different things are different. These linked servers are physically located in the same place, and even had sort-of cross-server communication ability(chat channels, RealID). NA and EU have literally a ocean between them.
inb4 Blizzard speaking about it in the next interview/press release like they cooked up some new and magically revolutinary technologie to make this happen.

It still shouldn't matter. They had no region lock in a game made 13 years ago, yet they don't have the technology now? Region lock is pretty much a massive joke.

But srsly, you can transfer one of your accounts to the EU server.

They never denied they had the technology to link NA and LA, in fact, both were always on the same server, you could even join the same chat channels. Merging servers that are actually the same server is, unsurprisingly, simple, unlike cross globe servers.
The "technology" they had before wasn't superior to what they have now, regions were still locked, not linked, what you could do was choose which one you wanted to play in. All Blizzard did was remove the choice to play in a diferent region with the same SC2 copy, which may have been greedy, may have been a bad decision, but in no way is any diferent technology wise. Instead of choosing the Europe realm, you buy the Europe copy.

I think that blizzard has made enough money.. think about it, sc2 has been out for 1 year.. now it make sense why in the beginning they decided to segregate their players even though they have 2 servers in the same region... back then, language barrier was their excuse. and now, blizzard make it look like they finally listen to the community by linking these servers which long time ago supposedly to be one..
This is pretty cool, hopefully there wont be any lag. I really dont know why they dont just link all of the servers, it would be really nice, theres a lot of other games that ive played against people around the world and never had any lag issues so i really cant understand why they dont link them all.

you can have more then 1 on your account. My friend has a NA and EU account on the same battle.net e-mail.
This is terrible Russian players are like the plague they will spam all chats and games in russian :[ I still have nightmares from my time on Age of Conan!
This is a good step forward for uniting the communities, especially since as the game gets older, fewer casual players will stick around, reducing the player pools in every region. Merging regions will keep player populations healthy.

Nevermind, I guess i was wrong, when i bought my copy i had to change my registration info so i could buy a NA copy, (and the ToS says that the info has to be true). I didn't know that you can just choose what region you want when buying a digital copy. But i believe this was an afterthought, because as i sad, initially the region you could buy depended on your personal details info.
Good decision. Will make matchmaking a lot better for LA and possibly Russia too. Don't know anything about the Russian server but I guess at higher levels you would have insane queues there.
I see no SEA but i don't care as much. We get NA access anyway! so it's like we play EU players too! I guess it's fair, since I assume linking with KOR TW would be the best link up for us. Though I believe I'd be pushed way down to bronze if that ever occurred (and probably most of the plat/dias)
edit: oh wait I thought it was going to be NA LA + EU RU together. lol my mistake.
well...I guess it still makes sense since SEA+ANZ are a lot of countries already. and like I said, we get NA access anyway.
Interesting. I wonder if the affected servers are happy with this or not. It will make GM tougher because its limited to 200. But it seems like every merge is from a weaker server to a tougher server. I'm guessing that the side that gets their MMR reset will suffer about 1 rank drop.
KR/Taiwan might be different though. Sure KR is tough but Taiwan has a lot of pro players. KR GM is going to be even more difficult.
For those who are saying that probably will get some lag with Brazilians on the server, it will not change anything. The LA server is already at the same location of NA server and we dont have any lag.
The linking will be nice for LA players, since we will be able to find games faster than now.
People worried about Brazillian BM, I don't get BMed as often playing on LA as I do playing on NA.
We're famous to be the biggest trolls ever on MMORPGs (check some wow servers like Warsong or Gurubashi and you will see it). But atleast until now most people on LA is very mature, I hope we keep it that way.

Well, even while significant part of russian players don't speak english, most of them know obscenities pretty well.
just when i thought this was great, it actually doesn't really change much. If they had linked na +eu+ kr, this would be amazing. Since most players would like to play on those servers. Linking the lower servers to the higher servers does not benefit the higher servers in anyway, it only gives you more mediocre players to play with .

Yeah! Hopefully it all goes well and without horrible lag/connection problems so that they will look into connecting more servers together in the future. Or at least offer a separate account that will do so. You know, so that the casuals don't have to worry about competing against "Super Koreans" and so that we can play against other servers and with better players. It'd be a hella big ladder, but I'm sure we wouldn't mind all that much.

But seriously, dropping LA players into the giant NA server isn't going to be a problem. You don't have to be able to communicate with your opponent in order to play, and "GG" looks the same no matter where you're from. This sounds like an overall positive change to me.

Probably won't happen unless something changes in SC2 TW/CN. The server population is in sharp decline and a few days ago CN server offer a big discount for monthly access. Then right after that TW announced almost 50% off for lifetime pass. But they are all doing this because SC2 need fast and aggressive tactic(and a response to Kespa's CN expansion plan).
In short, SC2 might not be "dying" in CN/TW yet. But it's certainly not "growing".

That's right, except for NA and LA, EU and RU, KR and TW servers being in the same places.
Based on the responses to this thread, LA is "in general one league under NA." I am rather excited about this as the leagues are based on percentages which essentially inflates the population of NA letting people like me on the high edge of diamond have an easier time getting into masters
My question is, are the percentages based on total population or population that has 1v1 MMR? Rather, I'm interested in whether completing one placement match would be better at the beginning of the season (as I plan to do), or perhaps 3-4 days after the season starts (in order to take advantage of the inflated population)
OMG this is amazing news! as a brazilian player i was about to buy another copy of starcraft just so i can play in NA, but i wouldn't be able to play with my friends there.

Those regions, or at least LA and KR, had diferent payment plans, because Blizzard was trying to promote the game. It wasn't actually a bad decision.
For example, in LA, you could buy the game for half the price but it would only last for 6 months and then you would have to buy the other half or pay monthly. In regions where games ussually cost a lot more than in NA, it was a smart move, since people don't often play games for more than 6 months.
I know in Korea they also had some options, like getting the game for free if you play WoW or something similar, subscription fees, etc. All besides the option of buying the full game.
The decision ended up making it impossible not to divide the regions, or you would have to have the same options for everyone.
Basically that was their reasoning when asked all along the last year, and yes, it was asked quite often.

I had a NA account transfered to EU, just write an email to the blizzard support. you will lose all your achievements and wins though :/
It seems that NID generators online work for creating a Bnet account which will work for TW. However, when I try to purchase the game, I need to use prepaid card. I am not sure how to get a prepaid card, but it shouldn't be too hard.
To be honest, the MMR should've been wiped now that separate pools of players are merged for the first time. Then again, I suppose the system will sort itself out after a couple of weeks.

They should just give everyone free name changes at the start of Season 3 T_T But this is kind of cool I guess, no reason to have under populated regions.
You know what this means...those servers are probably losing a lot of players off of battle.net and this is more of a survival mechanism to make sure everybody doesn't have to wait 10 minutes to find a new opponent.
What I really want to know is if we also get the Bnet Friend list support from those servers?!?!
Because I don't think we actually do, im not sure if we can add each other into custom games either, I think its pure Ladder match making... buuut hopefully im wrong.

I guess you read the OP?
Q. Will playing with players from the linked region impact my in-game latency? A. All players in the linked regions will be connecting and playing through the same data centers that they were using prior to region linking, which is the main reason why linking these regions together is fairly straightforward. There should be no impact on game performance.
Really sounds great for 1v1 ladder. More people to play with = Shorter wait time (not that big of a problem) = Better environment.
Not sure about how it will affect team games, however. Will communication become more difficult? Will organized teams become even STRONGER than they are now?

No, just log onto your bnet account via the Blizzard website and register a North American account. Unlike SEA, on the NA server you don't play the same opponent 5 times in a row. Unless you're Destiny getting stream sniped by Deezer.

You can't pay for a digital copy with a credit card number.
You need to buy a retail box or you need to go to a local convience store like 711 (they sponsor TeSPA) and buy a game card (similar to a WoW game card).

I live in Taiwan, and I don't think I had used my ID to buy sc2.
So far most of the sc2 forums in Taiwan like this news. It's a good challenge and we can find the match easier. I might need to practice harder tonight. loooool

Taiwan's skill is actually not bad or even better than NA. Just that never get sportlight on TL foreigner scene because of language barrier. If they get the chance to train with Koreans more often, their skill will grow super fast. I think Westerner needs to be really scare.

Hmmm, but didn't they also say that they aren't closing down any servers? They said latency won't change/you'll be playing on the same servers in both regions.

Of course that was probably population motivated.
I suppose that's kind of the same thing, but LA already connects to NA to play their games anyway. NA and LA players connect to the same physical location, and that won't change after season 3 starts.
And I'm sure the reasoning is similar too (population motivated). TW, RU, and LA are all really small servers.
GG Taiwan. But its arguable they will have more than 1 SEn after Koreans rub their skills on them The NA ladder should brace itself from the Peruvian zerg rushes

It's kind of bad that Russia will be linked to the European server. Their majority of players is more bm than the average European and very few of them speak correct English. Yes, I've played with a lot of Russians.

It is pretty competitive man, I have been trying to crack into masters on SEA since it was released, masters on NA but can never get into SEA masters, play versus the same opponents who are much better than me and keep losing mmr when I am able to climb up there
Either way its good news, lets hope they will eventually allow us to just simply pick a gateway to any server although I am tempted to get a TW account so I can play on KR server heh

I know, but I play on both servers.. And I can tell you right now that for some of the top 200 of Taiwan right now, they would not promote to Master League on the Korean server.
I guess they have their chance in the two weeks after season three starts to get into GM, but I think for many of them it will be impossible. Poor guys.

I think it's OK. They will be place to the proper place, and have more strong opponents rather then just play with the other Top 200's. It will be good for Taiwan's e-sport future.

I used to play on Warsong on WoW, so I can only wish my friends on NA good luck.
But seriously, this is a great step in the right direction. I'm still not sure why these divisions are necessary, but now I have hope that in a year or two I'll be able to play with whomever I want.
SEA should be one of the top priority of region linking. As we have experienced repeatable opponents on ladder. Seriously we need that region linking. Eventhough we get china or korea/taiwan.
Does anyone know what will happen when HotS comes out if I have a KR account, and want to get the expansion set? Am I able to purchase a TW copy, thus not needing to provide a SSN I had done for me with this current account?
from my understanding is that the active player base is probably getting smaller so they decided to merge the regions. wait lol, really? i really dont see a reason they do this, unless like the reason they gave SEA a NA pass ie SEA region population is too small.
Well let's see how it goes, this is a good news overall but i have to say that playing with russian fellows brings some bad memories from the warcraft3 ladder.
*enemy lagging from the begining of the game* you : gg gl * lag * him : gg gl * lag * you : from ? * lag * him : ru * endless lag all game long *
yeah SEA have a link to NA, but its a horrible connection sometimes and also timezones dont match up for us. Korea would have been nice then I wouldnt have to buy a whole new version to play in the country I currently live in
They left out SEA that has a very low active population. Is Blizzard intending to let SEA die? They know that SEA players also have NA accounts. I hope they just merge SEA + KR + Taiwan.
Not sure what all the EU whiners are on about... If you have lag playing against RU guys, it's your internet - not the platform you're playing on (in this case B.net).

That was always going to happen at some point. People who really like the game want to play on one of the three big servers and the casuals will slowly fade away between expansions.
Merging na/eu is what interests me and this is at least a step in that direction.

When have you ever heard ANYTHING about the LA server? Ever hear of Fenix? or Capoch? I hear those guys are pretty good and they're from LA server. Plus alot of the top LA players already play in NA and it's actually more rare for them NOT to already have an NA account.

afaik, only Potiguar, Capoch and wzp remain at LA as NA GM level, all the others stopped playing at LA long ago.

I kid, actually it is: sorry about that.
There will be no lag issues since (as mentioned on the Blizz site) the servers to be joined are located at the same places (LA and NA server are both in California, etc etc). What is likely to happen is the there will be more laggers, as in people with slower computers and connections.

FkcXyper shouldn't be left out he's a great player as well if you don't know of him but yeah my main point was that yes there are awesome players that have came from LA. I also play LA and there are still good players with potential and having them switch will maybe push them harder to get to the top and get noticed. I was mainly just telling the dude not to try to count LA out like there all garbage players or something because there only a fraction of how large NA is.
I don't think this is a step in any direction and we won't ever see those new 3 servers being merged together. It's simplcy because TW, EU and SEA have been too small and having 3 instead of 6 regions makes it much easier to control. They're not doing this for us, they're doing it, because it servers their purposes.

normal CIS players have eu accounts. Russian servers are inhabited mostly by massive noobs and cheaters\droppers\abusers so no huge surprise that they are joining it with eu: there is no need in it anymore since the limited WoL version have been mostly sold out and used up.

Honestly, for something like StarCraft 2, less servers is a good thing. More competition means your skill will improve more. If we were linked with the Koreans we would be able to make a better attempt at matching skill with them just by laddering a lot.
Now, the only problem with a super server is the language barrier, but that really doesn't matter all THAT much for 1v1 at least.

I don't think that a "language barrier" is such a big disadvantage, I mean, all you have to do is say the well known "GL HF" & "GG", if you want to keep chatting with someone, then just whisper him/her after the game, not a big deal :D.
PS: I'm quite happy about the server merging, I was about to buy a NA account and got a lot of doubts about on what to spend my money (keep in mind I'm from LA).
What else can I say... good news for everyone I beleive, a lot more players comming in, so it will be more competitive in order to ladder up.
<Sorry about the probably improper grammar, not my native language.>
I'm very happy about the news. I was about to transfer my account to NA. The LA server is pretty ridiculus, here there are only about 3 customs you can play withou having to wait 30 mins, and it's not uncommon to play agains the same people over and over again, and also play people way above or below your skill level.
(some people's prejudice here is just ridiculus, NA people probably won't even notice the change)
Why didn't they just leave LA and RU where they were? Both of those regions are notorious for lag issues and cheating. All of the good players who were good to have on NA/EU had already bought accounts there.
edit: Gonna assume that this is intended to cut costs of server maintenence. There is probably a lot of overhead with keeping a server running, regardless of how many people are using it, and EU/NA/KR probably had the capacity to continue running just fine despite the increased population.
I'm also hoping that they are making some level of upgrades to their server software/hardware to give them the confidence.
God damnit, all we ever cared for was NA/EU. Splitting EU and Russia apart was great for Europeans, as Russians hardly speak English, often use another alphabet, lag, flame and most of all cheat Anyone who has played WC3 knows what I'm talking about.
Does the KR/TW linking mean that it'll be easier to obtain an KR account now?
SEA will probably never be linked with other regions, SEA has a dedicated server, whereas the other regions (LA and RU and taiwan)have already used existing servers on NA,EU and KR, the only separation was the ladder, so merging them will be a soft change.
But there is a separate server present for sea, hence linking them to other regions will be a lot more complex, because one set of people connect to the SEA server, whereas the people you are linking to use another server...so how do they then play? pc connects to server, and then the servers pass information between each other, and then the server connects to the other person ? That seems like might cause a lot of problems.
But playing with the koreans would be a lot of fun(even if it is at a higher latency), would be happy if they find a way to do it

Yeah, I came from WC3 as well, and even though I try not to stereotype, it was downright staggering what a large % of Russian players in leagues/ladder would be BM and map hack. Definitely a really unique situation where it was a reputation very much deserved.
And yes, it is easier to play on the KR server now. Unlike a Korean SSN, the "NID" thing required for TW gaming is very easy to obtain. There are generators out there and I myself have already easily made a TW Bnet account. From there, you can either order the game online or you can purchase what seem to be TW "game points" that you are able to use to buy games. The TW version of SC2 costs roughly $65 when you convert their currency to USD. I'm still not entirely positive on how you buy these game cards, and I'm still not sure it is money I want to spend, but it is totally doable. I'm sure some people will post more detailed explanations of how to get these game cards.
i dont really see that big of an issue simply because i was around back when everyone played on iccup which was an international server that all countries played in. i held no gripes about it then, so i dont really see it being a problem here either
Seriously though, as long as this doesn't cause lag issues I don't see an issue with it.
LOL, that's really funny. I know not everyone is like that (there are douchebags in every country), but i have to admint that at least in mmorpgs, that's more or less true.

You're just stating your personal thoughts, they may be valid, but you have no proof to show that LA or RU is a massive cheater/lagger community, it depends on the ISP mostly, so, it's different for every player, at least, for me, I never had lag/cheat issues in LA.

About RU lag, i've heard white-ra say multiple times that "i lags 5 seconds few time" He will warn his opponents on his stream. Then occasionally someone will retort, "just your clever special tactics hey".
I cant speak from personal experience, but my family (step mom bro and sis) are all fresh from Ukraine and hated the internet reliability there (and natural gas reliability). Plus Russia is notorious for pirating games, all the cracks usually end up near cheats, so it's natural that they use them more often. Plus many Russian sites are not as widely viewed by Blizzard so they get hack detections less frequently.
Can someone explain to me how this won't affect ping? From the description in the FAQ, players still go through the same servers, right? But then the servers have to transfer data to each other. Let's say there is a 50ms ping between the RU and the EU server. Won't this just add 50ms to every game when people are playing across servers?

The servers are hosted in the same physical location.
They will be shutting one "shard" off, and all RU accounts will become EU accounts. There won't be 2 separate servers in the sense you are thinking.

Uhm sir meancookie, you have stated two pretty big errors about the community you've been with:
1.- WoW is a pretty "variable" game, where most of the time you'll find BM people, or you might find pretty nice people who like to play PvE and PvP nicely and be friendly... or you might find a lot of elitist players that hate you for not being "propperly equiped" for A-B-C encounter.
2.- Keep in mind you played on a P-SERVER, when you play on a P-Server you WILL find a lot of hackers-botters and stuff... sure, it still happens at blizz, but on a smaller scale... and gamemasters will probably bann them asap.
Most people that play SC2 know how to read english, if they don't know, then do a "premade" 2v2/3v3/4v4?... it's the only viable way i can figure out to play as fine as you always want.
It seems strange that they are doing this. They are combining more languages onto one server, so now it is more likely that people won't be able to communicate in team games. I think a much better solution would be to have it like in sc1 and wc3 where you can pick your server. Ideally you could pick it from all across the world, because people are already playing across the world anyway, but in this case they could just have it so that Europeans could pick the Europe server or the Russian server. Koreans can pick the Korean server or the Taiwanese. That way people can have access to the different regions, but it would still be easier to play with people who speak your language when you pick your own server.
This just means Taiwanese, Latin American, and Russian servers were to costly to justify the small population so they're merging them with popular near-by servers.
Blizzard won't add cross-region support for Eu-Na-Kr til they squeeze every penny they can out of lack of cross region play.

This is just pure ignorance and racism, LA is no where near to have more lag than NA nor they have that reputation, just so you know, LA and NA share the same servers, and your assumption is wrong, LA has been begging for the linking from the very first month of SC2.
I havent read all the responses, but as far as i Know, KR users also get a NA account too (correct me if im wrong)... So that means they will have KR+TW and LA+NA on one account? THATS CHEAP
EDIT: Just notices it's SEA who gets the NA, still SEA + LA/NA

oh ok good explanation I didnt realise there were differences in setup : )
Great for asians to come together on the same server, and LA + NA is good too I guess. I hope Blizzard is really thinking about making it possible to play on all regions on 1 account. The community would benefit from it so much. In BW I met most friends from NA and all my clans was based in NA and I'm in Europe. It's a real shame that you have to pay up 30-40 bucks extra for another copy of WoL if you want that experience in SC2.

In terms of lag, all those servers being merged are apparently already on the same server as NA, EU, SK.
Also cheating won't get out of hand probably.
Cheating probably got out of hand because Blizzard doesn't really pay much attention to LA or RU >.>. Now that they're being merged, they'll probably be less hackers (at least the detectable ones) due to Blizzard really paying attention to the more popular servers.

You're just stating your personal thoughts, they may be valid, but you have no proof to show that LA or RU is a massive cheater/lagger community, it depends on the ISP mostly, so, it's different for every player, at least, for me, I never had lag/cheat issues in LA.
Just one week for the server merging and get positioned on silver probably :D.
From my experience most people using hacks in WC3 were from Russia and SA, even though the actual developers usually weren't.

no offense x6Paramore, but the only thing that changes for NA is there are more players. Do you even talk to your opponents more than the standard glhfgg?
When have you ever heard ANYTHING about the LA server? Ever hear of Fenix? or Capoch? I hear those guys are pretty good and they're from LA server. Plus alot of the top LA players already play in NA and it's actually more rare for them NOT to already have an NA account.
Such ignorance, ugh...
So basically... we got jipped.. since we will have no new players come out of LA while Korea + Europe will probably have at least couple hundred thousand... meanwhile..everybody from LA server "mostly already has NA" ...
Seriously though, as long as this doesn't cause lag issues I don't see an issue with it.
lol, I laughed so hard...I've played Ragnarok for so many years and I know that most brazillians are really annoying but like every other country can have it's annoying people. I hope that the region linking improves the gaming experience for all.

Why are you guys scared/dissapointed about EU/RU merging? Believe me, there are plenty of dickheads in every region, as well as a huge portion of really nice people. As for the lag issues, I play on both european and russian servers and I notice zero latency changes. Aren't EU and RU servers hosted in the same data-center anyway?

edit: Gonna assume that this is intended to cut costs of server maintenence. There is probably a lot of overhead with keeping a server running, regardless of how many people are using it, and EU/NA/KR probably had the capacity to continue running just fine despite the increased population.
I'm also hoping that they are making some level of upgrades to their server software/hardware to give them the confidence.
This is just pure ignorance and racism, LA is no where near to have more lag than NA nor they have that reputation, just so you know, LA and NA share the same servers, and your assumption is wrong, LA has been begging for the linking from the very first month of SC2.
I've played LA players in many different games and there has always been a problem with lag. A lot of LA players also bm but I have met a handful that are cool. I personally am not excited about having LA players on the NA server.
And don't just say someone is racist whenever you read something you don't like from someone you assume is white. He didn't say anything racist, he just pointed out problems that we've had in other games from LA and RU players.

I'm a little confused at the vast amount of assumptions that seem to be thrown around in this thread. Some are saying lack of regional players are leading to the merger, and while that may be the case in some situations, I don't think there's a smaller amount of players playing Starcraft now than when started. SC2ranks has over 3,000,000 people ranked in Season 2, which if I recall is actually a larger number than Season 1. I could be wrong, though. Are there figures to back up these statements?
According to SC2 ranks, these are the number of ranked players per region, something I think is rather interesting. There's a lot more players in most regions than I think a lot of people in this thread are aware of, especially RU.
It seems to me that Blizzard's FAQ answer to why the linking is taking place is legit, just to create more match making opportunities, and not to compensate for a dwindling amount of players, as some of the posters have eluded to.
If there is no additional lag, and there is the ability to merge servers like this with no repercussions, they should make regions based on language, then have 1 main server for everyone to play on with a top level competitive attitude. English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Russian servers (merge TW and CN for Chinese), then 1 global server for everyone. Awesomeness!
It's worth noting that another possible reason for the "region link" is that the player league distribution on the smaller servers was pretty messed up. When they adjusted MMR boundaries for each region in order to compensate for the low retention and activity rate of Bronze, they did NA first and over time we saw the size of Bronze on SC2Ranks drop from 40% down to now 27%. They used a similar per-region compensation method for the other servers and it was successful on most of them, but not for RU, TW, and LA. The activity level on those very small servers may not be enough for adjustments to have any impact.
There were some other problems, too. A major complaint from the LA community when GM league was announced was that GM league was going to end up being larger than Master league, which ended up being true. This led to some Diamond players being undeservedly promoted to Master and then to Grandmaster which completely threw off the integrity of the GM rankings because players weren't able to keep their MMR in the expected Grandmaster zone. The effect of this was players couldn't spend their bonus pool and new GM players were rotated in every so often, but those new players had the same problems and GM league became a revolving door for weeks before Blizzard hacked in a solution and changed the GM offset.
I just got word from Blizzard that they will refund anyone who has both NA and LA on there LA account (maybe NA depends on which you ask for but I did it for LA), which is to say you aren't losing anything by the process of converting both servers into one. This was a huge relief for me since I figured I was screwed although I did ask originally for it to just be swapped to SEA but they would only give me a full refund which can take up to a week for approval and transfer of funds. So I'm not upset about all this anymore! ^^

When someone bms me in english, I bm him in spanish fur die lulz. I do not understand the complaints of some players.
The fact is that NA/LA servers are now located in the same datacenter, and if they are merged properly by Blizz IT guys, there should not be any lag issues. If you don't like playing with non-english speakers, well go fuck yourselves and welcome to the XXIst century.

If that is true, I hope that it is optional. I want BOTH my accounts; one of them was a Blizzard gift anyways(hail Twitter promotions :D), so I don't want any refund, I want my Terran-only account D:

If this is true, it's probably optional. The official CM response concerning this issue on Russian forums is that people who have accounts from merging realms will keep both of them.
I apologize for probably what most would see as a dumb question but, what server is Sea? I am trying to buy an account right now to be able to play on the Korean server because of the new link. Is the Sea server the same as Korean?

SEA = South-East Asia, so Australia, New Zeeland, Singapore, etc... That area. Korea has its own server (which will be merged with Taiwans server).

Okay well I am currently trying to create an account right now for Taiwan. I have already gotten past the part for a NID (National Identification Number), but I can't seem to figure out a way to pay the account. It is asking me for 1,150 Balance. Which is 1,150 Taiwanese dollars. It is asking me to use a pre-pad card to pay for it. Which would be fine if I could find somewhere to buy 1,150 on a pre-paid card.
The reason I was asking about Sea as an alternative is because it allows me to use paypal as a method of payment. If there is somewhere that I can purchase a pre-paid card with paypal so that I can use the card to buy the Taiwanese account I would be able to finish the transaction.
If there is any help that can be offered I would appreciate it.

yes we can. but asia players will have higher latency to NA. asian players have almost 0 ping to SEA servers, just like in KR. i really wished they included SEA in KR-TW link it's so hard to find a match past bed time.

From the TW bnet website, they will all be merged which means
1 ladder 200 gm spots for THE one and only TW + KR server
Which will probably mean that the 200 GM KR Ladder will stay the same xD.

We could, with half a second clicking delay. That and we have to handle good old American bm.
Point is, we can't play our SEA accounts after bed time. I go to my NA account to play custom games cause there are way more games, and because the delay won't kill me.
I would support a link between SEA and CN, and I'm sure China won't mind more people either. The language barrier won't be as bad as TW-KR anyway, at least there are a lot of Chinese readers in SEA.
I really hope the merge with the russian server doesn't bring too many hackers, i quit cs because of cheaters and don't want to quit sc2 because of them aswell >.>
I hope this goes smoothly. If it does, and Blizzard sees positive results, I think a global linking could definitely be possible in the future. I'm pretty excited to start seeing LA people on the ladder

I see so many posts from Na players complaining about drop hackers and map hackers, but I have never seen one in the LA servers. Also, the NA server is famous for stupid all-ins, so I'm afraid that we will have to join your people.
No, but seriously, does anyone from the LA server managed to download the English version? I have both clients here, but it says that I need a language pack to use the NA client, even tho the regions are already merged. <_< (Client relocalization is not an option)

Your MMR was reset indeed. Mine was reset as well, but I didn't play my 5 placement matches yet.
Also, keep in mind that no one was placed at GM league, GM league will open on Aug/9th, so you have this time to prove to the system that you deserve the spot once again
Also, our MMR has been reset for that exact reason that you said, GM in TW might be diamond in KR, so they had to reset our MMR...
I feel the number of russians on EU is now really significant. I haven't played a boatload of games (even of a small boat), but it seems about half of the people are Russian (they often chat a little, or you can guess from the nick, I also do have a Slavic nick, so they are usually curious whether I am Russain).
I really do not want to offend anyone, but from the limited sample I have seen, it seems to me that their level is a little lower. I am Plat and most of my oponnets are Plat as well, but the russian ones seem quite easy to beat. Maybe the MMRs of the servers were not totally compatible? I guess it will even out soon.

Russian players MMR has been reset and it is extremelly easy to beat 4 random noobs at placement and be placed at platinum. People will be demoted eventually, but this isn't something that is happening to "russians" it happens pretty often with new players, it's just that you have so many players with reset MMR that it gets really noticiable.
